Detailed Reviews
There is so much to recommend Max's. Red Hill is a beautiful part of the world, and Max's is perfect for accessing all the wineries in the area. I loved the roaring open fire in the living room with the plush, comfy sofas, the kitchen is extremely well appointed, the bedrooms comfortable and stylish. There was one big problem however. The roof over the bedrooms is made of corrugated iron, unlike the main living rooms, which means that the possums running across the roof woke us up EVERY night, several times a night. The noise really has to be heard to be believed, like a cricket ball being thrown at the roof. I didn't get a decent night's sleep during the whole of our stay. I have not encountered corrugated iron roofing before (excepting on sheds!) and don't regard it as fit for purpose in rented accommodation or in keeping with the otherwise excellent quality of this retreat.

The house is in a great location for visits to the wineries and peninsula area, it is in a lovely setting and the ambiance of the interior is warm and relaxing. There are really interesting ornaments and decorations in the house. Marcus is very welcoming, friendly and helpful providing advice about the area and what to do and where to go. Marcus started the fire one evening when we were late back and it was cold and wet - SO nice to come into a warm house. The rooms are comfortable and well appointed. There was ample and varied food to cook. We would definitely recommend it and would like to return.

We had a wonderful weekend at Max's Retreat a couple of weeks ago. With four bedrooms and plenty of room to sprawl out it was the perfect location for our group of 4 couples. Since we had reservations at a couple of restaurants in the area for lunch we decided to stay in both evenings . The first night Max cooked a superb 5 course dinner with all locally sourced ingredients. This was expertly served by Marcus. The next night they supplied all the ingredients for us to cook a bbq at our leisure. All we had to supply was the wine which was a pretty easy task given the location being in the heart of the wineries of the Mornington Peninsula.
All the ingredients for a lazy breakfast are supplied. Max and Marcus were extremely generous hosts and we would love to return some time soon.

I based my decision to book Max's Cottage based on the reviews on Tripadvisor, this is why I am not writing my own comments as I don't want anyone else to be as disappointed as I was.
We arrived after dark, the place was signed but in the dark it is pretty hard to see any signs unless they are lit. After we found our way, Marcus met us at the cottage. Our welcome was warm and friendly.
Max's Cottage is a lovely place, beautifully situated with amazing views. The cottage was well equipped and had a lot of character. Our disappointment was with the cleanliness of the place - mould in the shower did not look very inviting, dust everywhere so thick it looked liked it was never cleaned, bugs in the light shades hard not to notice, what topped it off was long black hair in the bed under the covers! The Sheridan bed linen is beautiful and the only linen we use at home, but it is nice when it is fresh and crisp and not thin and slimy - time for an update.
On the other hand our dining experience at Max's Restaurant was divine! Food was lovely, but the friendly service provided by Hugo was what made our experience outstanding. Thank you!
Lovely cottage, with a lot of potential to be AMAZING.

My husband and I had our wedding reception at Max's Restaurant and spent our wedding night at the Max's Retreat. What a beautiful place to spend your wedding night. We were greeted by a beautifully presented cottage with lots of attention to detail, very homely, with a very spacious living space and the most spectacular views of the vineyards. The kitchen was fully self contained and a very generous breakfast choice. Lunch at Max's Restaurant was also very lovely and only a stones throw away from the accommodation. So many beautiful sites and places to explore in Red Hill including around the grounds ofRed Hill Estate and the nearly walking tracks and wineries. A highly recommended place to enjoy a romantic weekend away or for your wedding night.

Great property, exceptionally well presented and furnished.
The lounge and kitchen wee exceptional. The lounge full of wonderful couches and chairs, with a great table for a more formal dinner.
The kitchen was fantastic. The host provides great breakfast provisions and lots of the little things needed to cook well.
We used the back bedroom and bathroom. This room feels like a "lean too" with a zinc roof and zinc walls in the bathroom. We stayed in the middle of winter and the heating in the bedroom just wasn't up to it.
The open fire in the lounge made for a very comfortable space.

Four couples stayed here for 2 nights to celebrate a birthday. It was a very wet, cold weekend but with the beautiful open fire (masses of wood supplied) and comfortable seating around it the weather just didn't matter.
All 4 bedrooms were very well set up, comfortable beds and good ensuite bathrooms with lovely toiletries. Only problem was, maybe the water could have been a bit hotter.
The kitchen had everything we needed, great supply of quality plates, saucepans and glasses. Breakfast supplies were very generous, everything we wanted. A large table to sit and eat.
It was a terrific house for a group stay, would highly recommend this place for 4 couples to stay.
If staying in this area again I would definately stay here.

I couldn't find Max's Restaurant alone on trip advisor so am writing this here as would like to highly recommend the dinner we had in celebration of my birthday there.
The wine tasting room was great- some of the best wine I've tasted in the area, and the staff were helpful and fun. They also had good quality wine related gifts.
The restaurant is in a phenomenal setting- panoramic views of Phillip island from every table. The staff were very attentive, and the food with matching wines was sensational. I had oysters with champagne, followed by steak with a lovely red wine and then a great chocolate dish with fortified sweet wine. My husband had calamari and then local fish followed by a very interesting sesame ice cream...he was driving, so didn't unfortunately partake in the wines!

This cottage is set in one of the most beautiful locations with views overlooking vineyards and the ocean. The kitchen was fully stocked with breakfast provisions including bacon, eggs, bread, yoghurt, fruit, coffee, juice and (perhaps not for breaky) a bottle of sparkling wine! We were provided with L'Occitane toiletries which was lovely. Highly recommend!
