This was a magnificent place to see birdlife of the mallee and of the Little Desert National Park. There are two fabulous waterholes where the birds come to visit morning and evening. The accommodation is basic rooms, twin-share, with a communal living area and a kitchenette for boiling water and a microwave for heating food. The beds and rooms were extremely comfortable, if basic. But the birdlife was spectacular.

Our family of 4 absolutely loved this outpost - quiet, natural and rustic. Be prepared to fuel your own breakfast and meals. Eat dinner at Mr Le in Nhill. Amazing array of birds on view including George, the worlds friendliest emu and a pen full of
Kangaroo rats. You might spot a rare mallee fowl in the brush. The lodge has walking tracks that abut the actual Little Desert- unique terrain and interesting even I the rainy season. Plenty of small and large natural adventures to be had. Highly recommend for nature lovers and families.

This place is magical, tucked away in the middle of vast landscape, so much to see and do, Craig who runs the place is kind and genuine, just brilliant. Stay here, you really need to stay here, it's awesome.

Not what expected. They culled their wildlife because they didn't manage breeding properly.
Surely a wildlife sanctuary cannot do that?
I wont ever visit again.
Rooms clean and tidy. Cleaners very friendly.

This was our honeymoon and we travelled the great ocean road, Grampians and Tasmania. This was the disappointment of our trip of six weeks.
The staff were unenthusiastic and did not know much about the animals at all. We were hoping to see a lot and saw some kangaroos and a bandicoot and a tame emu. Nothing is really wild here and many of the animals are in cages, which was not ideal. I thought a Nature Lodge would offer more of Nature, but it was shocking ... really bad. If you love real nature, perhaps try elsewhere.
It was a sad waste of our time.

My wife Bernadette won a weekend at the Little Desert Nature Lodge and we had a marvellous time. Relaxing, peaceful and friendly I fully recommend it. Especially if you want to get away from TV and the noise of the city. The stars at night are out of this world!
Thank you Mark for your assistance and friendship and for making our weekend one that we will never forget.

I have always stayed in Nhill on my way to Adelaide from Melbourne. This time I tried something different and stayed two nights out of town and made it a longer break. I slept!!!! There were no trucks, no cars and no loud people on the street.
The lodge is very quiet and comfortable. There is no restaurant on site, but a BBQ area and a guest lounge for use by ensuite guests 24/7. I didn't do any, but there are nature trails to walk and tours that you can book. Maybe next time, I'll definitely go back.

It is such a shame and disappointment for the locals that surround this wonderful piece of land called The Little Desert that the Lodge has closed. Somehow the owners never seem to be able to get it 'up and running' and when they do it all fizzles out. We need to have this Resort re activated and someone to take it over who is serious about hospitality. It has provision for caravans, camping, kitchen, BBQ, luxury accommodation, student quarters for schools to visit and get into the studies of the area. So peaceful for those who 'just wanna get away' and lose themselves for awhile. The property caters for a Manager on site, weddings, functions, educational, conferences and the list goes on. Please if someone out there can come up with an answer to this place and save it from ruin please let us folk at Nhill know about it. We need to re-open this place asap. Spring is coming upon us and is the best time of the year in the Western part of Victoria & am sure George the house emu (welcoming committee) would be happy to see some nomads, guests come into the gated area and enjoy the ambience of the place. The gates closed couple months ago and is I understand UP FOR SALE. This property is 50 years old this year and was built by a well known identity Wimpy Reichelt and wife Maureen (dec) who had wonderful vision way back then. We need some large hospitality company to get in and fix it. WOW that would be wonderful.

i stayed with my three kids just after Easter. Mandy is absolutely lovely and set a cabin up perfectly for us. we enjoyed the night tour into the sanctuary to meet bettongs, bandicoots, sugar gliders and bush stone curlews. the next morning we got to see the mallee fowl as well as a bettong having a “midnight snack”. It is lovely to have kangaroos and an emu wandering freely around the grounds. The nature walk with the numbered notes is fabulous - we thoroughly enjoyed it. we did it in two parts and took about 5 or 6 hours in total which included 2 hours at the bird hide. yes, 2 hours! my children (9, 7 and 4) absolutely loved the bird hide ~ it was amazing how many birds we saw come down to the water hole. It was a bit squishy for the four of us as it is really only for 2 people. I am glad that we came during a quiet time, however I would love to go when there are enough people for the restaurant to be open. i did find cooking for the four of us rather tricky. there is a small kitchenette with a microwave, sink and fridge (as well as fridges in the rooms). we had just been camping, so i had my little single gas cooker and we set that up on a picnic table and did our cooking and dishes outside which was lovely. we loved our stay here. perfect for a family getaway, even with small children. it would be great as a group holiday too. everything is clean and tidy, it is a really lovely place to be. the price was very reasonable. we’ll certainly return.

Very enjoyable stay. The room was large , with a good sized ensuite. All the usual things included i.e breakfast [ serve yourself in a comunal room ] tea, coffee, fridge, table and chairs plus a very comfy bed. The setting is lovely, tranquil, though there can be school groups, they are housed a distance away. We had kangaroos always around and there is one emu called George ! At night we also saw bandicoots [ a first for us ]. The birdlife in the property itself is brilliant and then you are only a short walk from The Little Desert N.P, with everything it has to offer. The wildflowers were also in abundance, I was amazed at the colours in this harsh environment. If you want to experience the desert in comfort I'd recommend this place. Also the people running it are friendly and fountains of information.
