My friends and I have been staying at Strathvea Guesthouse each Easter for many years. We all have busy jobs and lives in the city, so Strathvea and the Yarra Valley is simply the best getaway.

Deane and Toby take great care of their guests and we feel very much at home. Located halfway up the mountain road means beautiful native bushland, wildlife and fresh air.

"Unplugging" from city life for a few days is amazing. We talk, laugh, drink and play serious bocce on the internationally certified gravel driveway (*not actually certified - but loads of fun!)

There's a choice of heritage or modern rooms. I've stayed in both, but prefer the charm of the Heritage rooms. Hearty cooked breakfast every morning gets us started. Brilliant wineries and top notch restaurants in the area keep us busy during the days.

In the afternoon and evening there's nothing better than chilling on the huge verandah, glass of wine in hand, chatting and watching the stars.

We'll be going back for many more years to come.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

My girlfriend and I had only been together about 4 months and decided to take a long weekend out of Melbourne. After a lovely day at the Dairy, a few wineries and lunch in Healsville we got back to Strathvae where we recieved a warm welcome and were shown to our lovely room in the main house. It felt like we had been invited round to stay by close friends. With the fire crackling we chatted with a few other guests, enjoyed a cheese board and wine provided by our hosts and later got a great nights sleep. In the morning mist from the forrest rolled across the grounds with beaming rays of sunlight cutting through and creating the most amazing shadows trees and garden ornaments. Being avid photogrpahers Lilli and I both spent a couple of hours snapping away. We had such a great time and would recommend it to anyone. A great base for a wineries tour, or romantic retreat.

We stayed with friends for 2 nights in late January. We were in a small double bedroom with the smallest bathroom ever. Our friends were in a bedroom with the use of a shared bathroom. While being aware of what we were booking, being on a tight budget, we were suprised to find that the bathroom was in a different building involving a walk across the garden. We were then horrified to find that the shared bathroom was not cleaned the entire weekend despite being multi user and was smelly and unpleasant by the Sunday. We were surprised and disappointed to return to Strathvea at the end of our first full day to find that there was no room service for our ensuite room as well, so beds not made, no clean towels, no more drinking water, etc. Next morning we were also astonished to find that instead of a repeat of the excellent breakfast we had enjoyed on our first morning, half the items were off as if it had been a surprise that people were staying and would expect breakfast. The weekend was the final of the tennis Open, so we had expected to be able to watch it on television, however the signal was so poor and the picture so snowy that we could not see the ball - hopeless.

Response from Strathvea, Owner at Strathvea Guest House

I was saddened to read your review, because such a harsh review can be so damaging to a family run business such as ours. I felt that it was a shame that you couldn't have approached us with some of your expectations so we could explain and help put some of your disgruntled feelings to rest. I have written to you personally with no response. We are a B&B, not a motel, we don't provide room service. What we provide is a 3 course breakfast, the use of the guesthouse and not just your room, unlike a motel. It is a country experience away from city life. We even provide bad tele reception, to encourage conversation, a game of scrabble, or the opportunity to sit and listen to the crackling of the fire or the birds outside. Toby went out of his way to try and get the tennis for you, as the tv is only set up for dvd's. It's funny when you try and accommodate more so, it can become a negative against you. Strathvea Guesthouse provides a charming and enriching experience, it's a shame you could only see negatives.

We stayed one night at the Strathvea. Arriving via a fern filled forest, we were greeted by cockatoo's and Lorikeets feeding by the front porch. The 1920's style house is in a a lovely quiet spot, surrounded by gardens. We were met by our host Toby who was very friendly and welcoming and after showing us our room, we sat in one of the comfortable sitting rooms with an open wood fire and we had a nice bottle of wine. Our room was one of the Heritage rooms, it was fairly small with windows on both sides, but sweet. All the rooms are detached from the main house, the bed was a sleigh style with head and footboard which my partner at 6.1 found a little uncomfortable the shower/loo ensuite was small, but adequate. Bearing in mind it was winter time, the room had a heater and an electric blanket which was absolutely necessary. Breakfast was a great spread of cereals, juice, coffee/tea, yogurt and home poached fruits which included pears, plums, prunes and apricots, followed by delicious bacon, eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms and toast and homemade jam. We sat and ate breakfast and watched the Cockatoos and lorikeets feeding through the window. We enjoyed our short stay and would recommend to others.

What a wonderful experience, Deanne and Toby's hospitality was so welcoming along with divine breakfasts and a beautiful mix of old and new. I would head back there anytime and the 9 hour drive was definitely worth the road trip!

What a wonderful and peaceful place! Full of colonial charm and surrounded by beautiful gardens.
I spent two weeks at Strathvea as an artist in residence for the Toolangi Sculpture Trial.
Deanne and Toby were fantastic hosts and chef Mardie's meals were absolutely delicious.
I look forward to my next stay at Strathvea. Thanks for a great and unique experience.

Our second visit here, and just as good this time. This is a lovely old style guesthouse, lots of places to sit and relax, "granny's attic" furnishings and great surroundings. Even some peacocks and cockatoos who put on a show for you over breakfast. The very reasonable cost of the room includes a hearty cooked breakfast. Plenty of shopping, eating and other diversions a short drive away. You need to stay a minimum of two nights, but that's no hardship when the place is as welcoming and relaxing as this is.

Thoroughly enjoyed a relaxed winter weekend at this traditionally styled B&B. We were entertained with a winery (and chocolatarie) tour, sampling local wines and enjoying this beautiful region. Back at Strathvea, we enjoyed a five course gourmet meal featuring local produce and wines matched to courses. Final glasses of wine, tea, cheeses and chocolate were demolished in the lounge, before heading off to bed. Our room was warm and cosy, with loads of room for me to to spread out clothes and shopping - oh, and the bathroom was good too - a hot shower always a winner. Our hosts were welcoming and happy to accomodate our wishes. This was a lovely place to stay in winter, and I would love to get back there in Summer, so I can sit outside on those lovely verandas and watch the birds.

Healesville, Australia8 contributions
Hi there, Sorry we disappointed you by not offering 1 night. Although it appeared that 1 night was offered when going into the booking site, it asks you to adjust your nights to 2 or more when completing your booking. 30 years ago the guesthouse offered individual couples dinner as well with their stay, as there were not many restaurants to dine at. The Yarra Valley has changed dramatically since then. Now there are so many options of having a dining experience that it has become difficult to make it viable to offer this at the guesthouse. So to with one night stays. The 2 night minimum option has allowed our business to continue to this day. Particularly being able to offer accommodation to individual couples. We are now the only guesthouse running with accommodation. I thank you for your understanding. Kind regards, Deanne
