Detailed Reviews
My husband and I were staying in Harrietville for a little getaway when we decided one night we felt like some chips with our home cooked steaks. I have Coeliac Disease and find a gluten free chip very hard to find! We called the Harrietville Hotel and they were fantastic! They cook all their gluten free meals separately, have a dedicated gluten free fryer and the gentlemen on the phone eased my husbands concerns about their gf procedures (explaining he himself has 3 coeliac children).
Fantastic service and delicious food! Would highly recommend!

We travelled to Harrietville late January after being there many times over the years. Many improvements have been made. We were notified of a Dj playing that weekend before arrival and still came. The music stopped at 12.30 as told to us. This area had struggled with bushfires and COVID and so nice to see it busy and looking after the community and young folk occasionally . The area doesn’t have the traffic like Bright and needs to allow for a bit of fun on occasions. The food was awesome and rooms cozy and clean

Had lunch at this pub today, the food was delicious and very good value, the venue and the service was also really nice. Was spoilt by the owners jack Russell coming out and approaching customers dogs who were on a lead and unable to walk away, bearing it’s teeth and acting aggressively. don’t come here with your dog for a peaceful Sunday lunch.

Stayed there with some friends a while back and from the moment we arrived we immediately felt a strange vibe. First i guess i should mention i am not white, so to start, the woman at reception kept asking if we had kids or more family joining us even though we kept saying we didn't. She then proceeded to say that the owner would go though with torches to check our rooms. We were made to put a deposit (virtual card) even though our (white) friends who booked another room weren't asked. This should have been a red flag but we decided to stay anyway despite this racist vibe.
Secondly our room was not worth the price. We walked in and it smelled damp and moldy. Our blanket cover had stains on it and one of the beds was broken. Despite all this we still decided to try out the restaurant. The salad my friend ordered was soggy and flavorless and our entrees were super overpriced. When I asked about an error on my order, the girl dropping off the food was rude and rolled her eyes at us. The only good thing was the beer.
I would definitely not recommend this place to anyone as the website makes it look way better than it actually is. Lots of false advertising and horrible customer service.

Response from Harrietville Hotel Motel, Owner at Harrietville Hotel Motel
Responded 10 June 2021
Good Afternoon, We are so sorry your stay was so disappointing, we wish you would have come to us whilst you were here and we could have rectified some of your complaints. We have had to ask people for virtual cards just recently, as unfortunately, we have had many dishonest people who haven't disclosed the correct numbers of people in their families/party. We do have a few members of staff that can check you in, and some may not have handed out the virtual card form, as it has only been recently introduced. We pride ourselves on our genuine, family friendly customer service and are very sad to hear you didn't experience this. We hope you can visit us again and give us a chance to improve on your last visit.

We have just had 4 great nights in Harrietville at the Harrietville Hotel Motel and would come again.
It definitely isn't fancy (our room was basic and a little dated) but it was $240 per night for our family of 4 at the busiest time of the year (NYE) which is good value.
We loved playing in the hotel pool, and exploring the area including the charming bakery and nearby hikes.
We ate at the pub twice. Standard pub food but with a tremendous atmosphere, with friendly staff and fast service.
Special shout out to Eliza, who noticed we were booking for New Year and phoned us to ask if we'd like to reserve a table for dinner on NYE. Proactive service like that is rare!
The motel doesn't clean your room if you're staying for multiple nights, but the staff were happy for us to swap our towels or ask for anything we needed.

Got to this wonderful place on 25th Jul and stayed for 6 nights. The facilities were amazing. room came with 1 queen bed and 2 single beds so for 2 adults that was a very good size. The room had everything we needed and warm. The restaurant served very very good food and the atmosphere at the bar and restaurant was very lively and enjoyable.
Dianne and Ross was the most amazing host, very friendly staff overall and they looked after us really well and we thank you for our lovely stay.
We definitely would recommend this place to anyone. It's not far from Mt.Hotham also a lovely little town called Bright which we frequented almost daily for our groceries (Woolies)
P/S : We miss George whose the house dog (Jack Russell) who visited each table at the restaurant either lunchtime or dinner waiting for his snack.

We stayed here on the first Monday of September school holidays and the food was top notch. My partner and I both had the Hawaiian Parma - he added salad to his, I added mushroom gravy. Our son had the Kids nuggets and chips. At $20 each adult meal, it was the best I've had in a long time. The parma was juicy, the toppings fresh and the chips were crisp - not dripping in oil like lots of other hotel offerings are!
Us adults each tried the local Harrietville brew, being Tasmanian I went for the full body mountain draught and my partner tried the lager. Both are worth the trip down the mountain for. The Drought is brewed with proper hop flowers by the taste of it whilst the Larger is lighter so I'm leaning towards compressed hop pellets. This is one place you are going to have to stop and have a meal at - or just drop in for a drink of the local.

The rooms are not insulated and have one small space heater. Tea and coffee is provided but no cups, mugs or glasses. The restaurant has a minimal selection and the quality was adequate at best. Had dinner tonight at the Snowline up the road. Ten times better food was. All up not highly recommended

Hi David, Sorry to hear your room and meals weren't up to standard. We have many return guests and our meals are very popular with locals and tourists alike throughout the region. Out of interest could you please let us know what food you actually ordered and which night you dined with us, so we can follow up with the kitchen staff. If you had of drawn this to our attention whilst you were here, we could have acted on it immediately, to make your stay better. Hopefully, you will give us another go to improve for your next visit. Kind Regards Siobhan Harrietville Hotel Motel.

After recently cycling past a giant sculpture of a trout outside the Stoney Creek Fish Farm I was looking forward to a big dinner of fish that night. I asked the manager of my accommodation would the Harrietville Hotel Motel which I passed on my way into town be open tonight, and I was pleased when she said 'Yes'. I checked into my room, cleaned up, then wandered up to the Harrietville Hotel Motel at around 7:30 pm in search of that big fish dinner.
The hotel/motel sign boasted 'OPEN TILL LATE' and I saw several diners enjoying their dinner inside - and the special of the night was 'Trout and salad' - perfect I thought .... until I tried to order it. I was told by the barman that the kitchen had closed - and that there wasn't anywhere else in Harrietville that could provide me with a meal that evening.
I explained my plight of having cycled all day, and that I was very hungry and I really needed some sustenance. I asked the kind barman to share my predicament with the chef, explaining that I was happy to eat anything. However, he returned from the kitchen and reiterated that the kitchen had shut - and he then offered me a packet of potato crisps. Wow.
I've cycled all over Australia, Europe, Canada and Africa, for over 20 years, and have sometimes had trouble meeting a kitchen's closing time - but in every instance the kitchen appreciated my circumstances and prepared a delicious and filling meal for me. In this instance however, it wasn't an unreasonable hour to ask for dinner. The other hotels I'd visited during my week of cycling around the Ovens River region had been taking my dinner order up till 8 pm.
This level of customer service was very disappointing - and not a good first impression of Harrietville. I wandered back to my accommodation hungry. I shared my disappointment with the accommodation manager, and she said 'Go to your room and I'll bring something over for you love' and within 10 minutes I was enjoying a hot meal - a very delicious and filling serving of curried sausages with a loaf of bread. I'd been rescued by exceptional hospitality.
My memories of Harrietville are now mixed, but my advice to hungry souls is to keep pedalling or driving to a town with a pub with reasonable closing times - and one which appreciates the plights of travellers.
