Dropped into the Snowline Friday night on my way up the hill as I’ve done for years now. I walked in and it looked like everyone had just been to a funeral. No music and no atmosphere. Not many locals either. Had a chat to one of the locals that I knew to get an update on Hotham and the road. Tried to have a chat and it was hard to hear with both TV’s blaring with the footy. We had to step outside to hear properly. Hopefully this was just a once off and when I return it’s back to the vibrant pub it was.

My partner and I have just spent 2 weeks travelling through the high country, enjoying the gorgeous autumnal colours of the towns and the accommodation which was available. However, we were truly disappointed by this hotel. It is in dire need of refurbishment as the room which we were provided with had a dirty and stained carpet while the furniture had seen better days. The queen size bed was pushed against the wall which made access difficult for the guest who had that side of the bed. There was no proper bedside table but an old metal luggage rack with a lamp clipped onto its side was used as one. The wall heater was old, working on an economy cycle and had to be boosted every 2 hours to keep the room sufficiently warm. Not only was there no microwave provided but even a box of tissues was significantly non existent! Fortunately, we had brought our own hairdryer as none was there to be used. The hotel’s only redeeming feature was the quality of the food in its bistro. We had dinner there on 2 nights and kudos to the chef for the delicious food and the interesting choices that were on offer as specials for the night. Would not recommend this hotel as there must surely be others who can offer the basics which a traveller expects.

Response from Bennett Mountjoy, Owner at Harrietville Snowline Hotel
Responded 21 May 2021
Hi Susan, Sorry to hear your stay with us did not meet your expectations. We take all feedback very seriously and are always striving to improve our product. Our Motel is currently positioned as good value three star accommodation. Our rooms provide all the basics a high country adventurer should need and when combined with the high quality food, hospitality and rustic charm of our pub most of our customers leave happy & with overwhelmingly good reviews. While our rooms are by no means 4 or 5 star luxury we do take cleanliness very seriously and try to address all maintenance issues ASAP. With the recent post COVID boom our property has experienced unprecedented demand & high occupancy and as such I apologise that some issues such as ingrained carpet stains sometimes can't be addressed as part of the daily cleaning routine. We are currently going through a deep clean and thorough maintenance audit of all our rooms to ensure they are up to standard for our busy winter period. This will include steam cleaning of any carpets required. We have been collecting feedback on required updates/upgrades that would add value to our rooms. We do agree that the bedside lighting is a must and this is part of our renovation plan. Our rooms don't have kitchenettes and aren't advertised as such. They do have a kettle with basic coffee & tea provisions as well as a bar fridge. We do plan to provide a shared bbq and kitchen area for guests however most of our guests stay with us to experience the great mix food, local wines & craft beers provided by our pub.

Lovely Alpine pub. Great food good range of drinks. Accommodation is basic but nice and warm. Perfect for a base to explore the high country and ski fields. Close to Mt Hotham and Bright. Menu is basic but amazing.
