This review is about Bert the boot fitter who works in the hotel through winter. #skimetric I had the most terrible experience! Bert insulted & intimidated me, and reduced me to tears. I have wide feet & poor circulation. I asked for a boot that would give me warm feet, was wide at the toes & low at the back, as I get bad calf pain with high back boots Bert fitted me with high backed boots. I had extreme pain in my calf. I reminded him that I asked for a low back boot to stop calf pain. He did not like this feedback. He did not listen & refused to change the boot. He had to grind ithe back of the boot to relieve the pain. The boot was also too tight, my toes were scrunched up & in pain. He blew it out a couple of times but then said my ski technique was causing my issues & that I should get private lessons to fix my ski technique so that my boots don't hurt me. What? I had one day of skiing left after the boot was finished. The boots did not feel good. I had poor control, like I was floating. I still had pain in my calf muscles and my toes felt tight. Bert had told me that because that the boots were handcrafted, they would feel different but I would get used to them & not only have the best boot ever, but also a great improvement in my skiing. So I left full of optimism and looking forward to pain free skiing in the boots that were hand crafted for me. 2 weeks later I went back to my home resort to ski. I did not get used to the boots as Bert said. I felt like I had no control in them, I had bad pain in my calf muscles and my toes were squashed and bruised (see photos). I could not finish skiing my week. In January 2023 I went to Canada / USA for a ski vacation. The boots were torture. I went to a boot fitter at the first resort that I stayed at. He looked at the boots and and my feet. He told me that I had been sold MEN's boots that were ONE SIZE TOO BIG. No wonder I felt like I was floating in them. He said that no work would fix the problems that I was having with these boots. He also said that men's boot tend to be high at the back, but women's boots have a lower cut as women tend to have larger calf muscles and would get pain if wearing a mens boot. Interestingly, he also said that this was not the first time he has had to modify Skimetric boots. Bert boasts that he has 100% success, but I feel people are too scared to give feedback. I know this because when I gave feedback, he belittled and intimidated me, and blamed my ski technique rather than the boot and his work. Also of interest, the Canadian boot fitter had equipment that was almost exactly the same as Bert's (Bert boasts that his tools are unique and his trade secret) but newer. The Canadian bootfitter ended up fitting me in a pair of women's ski boots that are made for wide feet and my correct size. They only required one blow out at the toes. I wore these boots skiing 3 weeks through Canada / USA and love them! No pain, nowhere! In one year I have spent $4500 on boots. $3300 on Bert's men's boots that were one size too big and $1200 on women's boots that fit me perfectly. Bert has refused to give me a refund This post is to protect people from having a similar experience to mine. Please feel free to contact me. If I can prevent just one person throwing away $3300 and being humiliated by Bert, it will be worth me not getting my money back.

Response from Pip Hunt, Marketing at Astra Falls Creek
Responded 13 Apr 2023
Hi Diana, We were quite surprised to read your review regarding your experience with Bert, as he has been working successfully in his Skimetric workshop located within Astra Falls Creek for 10 seasons now. Over the years, we have received numerous positive testimonials from satisfied clients. In light of your feedback, we have asked Bert to provide a detailed response to address your concerns: Thank you, Astra Falls Creek, for the opportunity to respond here. Firstly, I would like to clarify that I did not insult or intimidate this customer. However, I understand that the customer became extremely upset when I advised her that her request to modify the back of the boots was not recommended and was against best practice. Despite my professional opinion and experience with many satisfied clients, she continued to insist and became increasingly upset, even raising her voice and demanding I do as she asked. As a result, I decided to accommodate her request. Still, I took the unusual step of asking her to sign off in writing on the scope of additional work that was outside of my normal recommendations, and this additional, not recommended work could not be guaranteed. The client agreed to this and signed the document where she took on the responsibility for the non-recommended work, which I have in her Skimetric file. Unlike regular boot fitting, the Skimetric program and Skimetric Academy experience is more than just boot fitting. It is a function integration system that blends best practices using the latest on-snow movements and indoor equipment setup techniques to deliver the best possible outcome for skiers. The importance of skiing in dynamic balance is a crucial part of this process. Leaning back or leaning into the hill are common problems in skiing, and the Skimetric program is set up to address all these issues in detail, both on and off the snow. However, good cooperation and teamwork between myself and the client is of paramount importance, as it's an ongoing process of on-snow and indoors working together to become a better skier. Unfortunately, this breaks down when the client makes demands outside of the Skimetric program that is not recommended by me and is unable to make efficient ski movements for on-snow success. Skimetric has a proven winning formula for success. This was the first time I agreed to perform additional work outside my expert recommendation, and this is the first unhappy client I have experienced, whom I am willing to continue to help. As an international skiing competitor and class winner of major international races, including the world's longest ski race - The White Ring, the Peak to Valley in Whistler, the Top to Bottom in Thredbo several times, US Masters Championships, Silver Medal Powder 8 Skiing World Championships, and even World Championships in grass skiing, I work with the Head racing department building Skimetric setups for World Cup winners, promising juniors, skiers with disabilities or major injuries from accidents like motorcycle crashes, joint replacements, and there are in excess of 30 joint replacements Skimetric clients I've successfully worked with and, in general, people referred by medical specialists. I also was asked to do Skimetric presentations at the Austrian Ski Academy (Bundessportheim St.Christoph) known as the cradle of skiing where the top Austrian ski instructors train instructors and demonstrate the real facts of efficient skiing. Rudi Lapper the chief Instructor and some of his demonstrators are Skimetric graduates. Rudi is also a winner and front runner of - Der Weisse Rausch- annual extreme Ski race in St. Anton Austria. It needs to be clear: I am not a boot fitter, and the Skimetric program is much more than simply boot fitting. I worked 40 years plus as a ski professional, working with leading manufacturers worldwide, and providing feedback to medical professionals such as the doctor from the Austrian ski team. Athletes like the world's number one extreme skier J T Holmes, whose life depends on the precise function of my analysis and work, came to me with problems that I was able to solve and develop further using my World Cup racing insights. Further, during the initial assessment, I noticed issues with this client's feet and painful metatarsal joints. I recommended that she consult a medical specialist to help her with her problems. It's important to note that these issues were not disclosed on the Skimetric data sheet. It was further identified that Mrs. Wolf had declared on the Skimetric Data sheet to be an Expert skier. This is misleading information in every way on this important document. The level of skier (expert) that you identified yourself as, is way above what it is which is a serious problem for important adjustments such as the release settings on ski bindings. It also needs to be said that Mrs. Wolfs skis where in very poor condition with damaged bases and completely blunt with rusted edges. It was recommended to have these skis professionally repaired and tuned as a matter of urgency. The boot model used for her fitting is a unisex HEAD design with a lightweight frame, wide forefoot, and injectable liner, and is not a high back boot as claimed. It is a standard boot that is commonly used for both females and males and according to the Skimetric data sheet she completed prior to starting the program, her weight and height are within the range of common dimensions for both men and women, making the unisex model appropriate for her biomechanics. Regarding her skiing style, skiing in a far back leaning position causes excessive load on the knee joints and upper legs, loss of skiing control, and a substantial increase in pressure on the foot within the boot. After she sent me a video of her skiing, it became clear that this was a significant issue for her, in terms of leaning way too far and 'in the back seat'. I suggested taking lessons to help correct this problem, and she later mentioned that her instructor helped her overcome it. I have retained our SMS correspondence where I followed up with the customer, to see if the lesson helped address her leaning backward position, and received positive confirmation that everything was all good via a pleasant SMS exchange. The boot was selected and crafted using the Skimetric natural integration process, along with foot imprints, to allow for a well-balanced and controlled skiing experience. The difficulties she encountered are the result of her request to modify the boot against my recommendations (which she signed off on) and her highly inefficient leaning-back skiing technique rather than the boots themselves. As for her experience in Canada and what was reported to have been said. If the boot fitter in Canada was aware of the full circumstances and back story - being that the work that was carried out, was against my recommendation, and only done at the insistence of the customer - I suspect the boot fitter in Canada may have spoken differently about the situation. However, this is just my speculation, and I cannot be certain. I certainly do however stand by my 25 seasons of back-to-back complaint-free Skimetric work, so her statements come as a complete surprise to me. The Australian Snow Sports Industry Association awarded me Membership to the Snowsports Hall of fame and I have been a member since 1978 and contributor as Vice President for several years. Here is a link to over 50 skiers I have worked with including World Cup Race Winners of their experience working with me - the first review is from David Kuhn Ski Patrol Manager Thredbo, Australia, who spends 70 hours a week on skis. "Dear Bert, After 33 seasons of ski patrolling in Thredbo, Australia, and 15 seasons overseas, I have never been more comfortable with my new boots thanks to your system and your diligent approach to boot fitting and body alignment. The power and precision I have now with effortless edging is unbelievable and I am using considerably less energy each day. Just walking in these boots is a pleasure as my legs and lower body are aligned better now than any time before having had many sets of orthopaedic many made by good podiatrists..." you can read the full review here: https://www.skimetric.com/real-stories/ At Skimetric we continue to strive to deliver the very best service and products, my equipment is unique and made to my exacting specifications with 90% of my equipment not visible to the customer in a separate work room, and we are backed by a team of leading medical experts and advisors. You can learn more about our team here: https://www.skimetric.com/advisors/ I informed Mrs. Wolf of the costs associated with the Skimetric program and any additional items, such as footbeds or boots. I also made a special assessment appointment for you in Sydney, saving you time and money, and applied a pre-Covid price as a gesture of goodwill. While I understand your frustration, it's important to consider the factors that have contributed to your experience, including undisclosed foot issues, declaring incorrect information on the Skimetric data sheet, requesting work that I didn't recommend as it voids the boot warranty, and compounding the situation with an extreme leaning-back skiing technique. We always strive to provide the best service to our clients, and we encourage open communication to address any concerns. Our offer to continue to work on the boots to your satisfaction remains open. I attended the spa for a treatment package but was not a guest. Sienna who did my massage (sorry if I got her name wrong? Lovely English lady) did one of the best remedial massages I have ever had. I wish I could go back for another! The staff were professional, friendly and the place was beautiful. Thanks again

My partner and I came to Falls Creek for a weekend, we were missing the snow since 2015. Him as a skier and myself as a snowboarder. Love the room and the bathroom, very modern and cozy. We will definitely come back next year to do it again. Astra has a cute library to read and relax, away from people and kids; their pool and spa are really nice, helps you to recover better. The wifi needs to improve if you need to stay in touch with your kids overseas. I highly recommend to stay.

The Astra staff have been friendly and helpful from the time I started booking and needing to cancel due to Covid lockdowns. This season we finally made it and we really enjoyed our stay. We had a room on level 3 with the lift operational to all floors but choose to take the stairs most times. It was great to be able to sit in the bar lounge even when they are closed. It is a comfortable area with a fireplace and good to get a spot early ahead of the crowds coming in. I used the spa a couple of times and it was a relaxing experience. Getting off the slopes and being able to have a sauna, steam room, magnesium pool and spa aided recovery. The ski locker room was large and drenched gear dried overnight. Bed was comfortable and there was plenty of storage space for our clothes.

We felt welcome the moment we arrived at the hotel. The staff gave us a quick tour of the hotel and its amenities. Overall the place was warm, cosy and we loved the amenities plus the friendly staff at the reception, restaurant and the snow mobile. During our stay the state wide lockdown occurred and the hotel provided flexibility and options for the guests. Thanks Mikaela for looking after us throughout our stay. You were above and beyond.

I booked Astra 6 days before I went there, for a party of 8 ( 4 adults and 4 kids) however when we arrived we told we had to all have a set menu at $90 a head (minimum) otherwise our teenage kids could have a meal from the kids menu which was too small for them. We ended up having our kids leave the restaurant... our meal was relatively good, however it was pretty salty, and the lamb dish was chewy. They were incredibly inflexible when it came to paying the bill, not allowing us to split it two ways. I could understand if ti was split multiple ways, but for a 50/50 proposition, which I would have thought was fairly common, they were unable to oblige. Disappointed, and will not be retuning any time soon.

Thank you for taking the time to write your review in regards to your dinner experience with us, Emily. We offer 2 options when dining with us either a 6 or 9 course tasting menu, plus a children's menu for our younger diners. In light of your feedback, we are drafting a Teen's A La Carte Menu to bridge the gap between the tasting menu and the children's offering and we have advised our head chef in regards to your comments about the lamb. From time-to-time guests do request to the split the bill and we are happy to accommodate this, so unsure why this was not permitted this time around, our sincere apologies for this. We hope that we can welcome your family back another time. David Featherston - Venue Manager

I stayed here for a week and it was perfect. I had the best experience ever and I recommend it to anyone out there and it even included lots of great things with the hotel such as a pool, spa, sauna, steamroom, a place to keep your skis and snowboard And even rides to the slopes in a safe vehicle. I personally think this was one of the best hotels I have stayed in and I hope that you enjoyed your trip there or if you are thinking about going I definitely recommend it.

Facilities were fantastic, from the bar, lounge and dining room to the splendid pool, spa, sauna and steam room. Breakfast was excellent. Staff were lovely. Big comfy bed. One quibble: our family room had a sofa bed for the kids which was of the cheap and nasty variety, and not at all comfortable when unfolded. At the price paid for the room, this was a downer indeed. Friends got a room with bunk beds for the kids, which was much better.
