The Royal Mail Hotel garners high praise for its service, with staff members providing an attentive and professional experience that guests find memorable. The hotel's picturesque location is celebrated, ideal for those seeking a scenic retreat, although the remoteness may deter some. Visitors enjoy the stylish atmosphere, comfortable furnishings, and luxurious room touches, yet opinions on cleanliness and value for money are mixed. While the amenities, including dining and natural surroundings, are lauded, some guests feel improvements could be made in housekeeping and justifying the cost.

We were booked into the cottages 3km from the main hotel but in a charming wooded area close to the original homestead and with fine views to Mt Sturgeon. The cottages each have what look like a corrugated iron water tank attached to the blue stone building but the iron is in fact the en suite shower, toilet and bathroom wash area. My cottage had a large bedroom leading from the entrance hall off which is the said en suite. The bedroom leads to the living room and kitchen in which all breakfast supplies are found. You can book brekkie back in the hotel if you give notice. There was plenty of food, even eggs to fry and bacon. I do not like duvets and felt too hot but that is me. Being far out in the country it was quiet with the occasional padding of wallabies and the dawn chorus of magpies and cockatoos, all thoroughly charming. Dressing gowns are provided and the toiletries are sourced and made locally and very fine.
We were offered a lift too and from the hotel for dinner and that was appreciated.
Next time, and I would like a next time, I think I would prefer the main hotel complex. But the views and the feeling of almost being in the bush made up for the minor irritations of being almost self catering. Mind you the catering provisions are well above average.

We had always understood this to be a "foodie" hotel, and expected great meals. We weren't disappointed. Wickens restaurant in particular was an amazing experience, with delightful surprises in every course of the degustation menu. More art than food, really, but exquisite flavours and combinations, with a strong reliance on locally grown herbs.

The hotel is really a glorified motel, with rooms entered from open passageways and cars parked at your door. However, the interiors are very nicely furbished, with mini bar, ironing board, kettle, tea/coffee, fresh milk. The bathroom has a heated floor, although that is controlled centrally and only comes on for a while in the early evening, as far as I could tell. One negative for us (which we experience at many hotels) is that the doona was way too warm for a summer night. However, the Parker St Project restaurant and the Wickens restaurant are not remotely "motel" like. Wickens is particularly dramatic with sublime views towards the southern end of the Grampian mountain range.

Staff are friendly and efficient. The only thing lacking for us was a cosy, comfortable lounge to hang out in on a rainy afternoon. There is a small area beside the bar, but covid regulations meant that there were only a small number of chairs available (6, from memory). It is ideally located for local walks (on the hotel's property) or more strenuous hikes up the nearby mountains (about 10 minutes drive to carparks at the bases).

Can't wait to come back !

I had waited 2 years to get to and experience the Royal Mail hotel but it was well and truly worth the wait. The hotel accommodation had all you needed to make the stay enjoyable and it was nice to have a small table and chairs and the deck to enjoy some nibbles and drinks before dinner. The heated bathroom floor was a bonus, beds were very comfortable, rooms large enough, especially the bathroom to have two people and not be in each others way. Quality inclusions.
Wickens was the key reason for wanting to attend and I was not disappointed at all, in fact it was all and more than I expected and I was happy to justify the price tag of $220 pp for dinner. The waiters were attentive and informative and were skilled in matching the wines to their clients tastes. The location and set up of the tables gave you the best possible outlook and you didn't feel crowded at all both others in the room. The food was presented beautifully, was a tasting sensation and a good sampling of all types of food on offer. So fresh, light and tasty. I simply could not fault anything about this experience. I would highly recommend both this and Parkers Restaurant if you are after a beautiful dinner experience.

I cannot comment highly enough of the outstanding meals and location of this Hotel. A meal at Wickens is one of a kind, in terms of quality, imaginativeness, ambience and service. Aside from the sensational food, the location at the foot of the spectacular "Three Peaks", part of the Grampians mountain range, is awesome with most of the beautifully comfortable rooms having uninterrupted views. So worth a night or two for an incomparable memory of regional Victoria and Australia.

We were given a $100 voucher for Christmas and decided to have a couple of nights with dinners at the hotel. We always have 2 bedrooms and like to have plenty of space so much of the hotel's accommodation offerings didn't suit us. However, Mulberry house across the road from the hotel looked just right and was available for a Friday and Saturday night stay. We could also get a dinner reservation at Parker Street Project (see separate review) for Friday.
With 4 large bedrooms (sleeps 11 people), it was a bit more than we needed and a bit of a splurge at $645 a night but we had lots of space and it worked perfectly.
Online booking wasn't working quite so perfectly for us so we rang to check availability and make bookings and the reception staff couldn't have been more helpful. In fact, we found all of the staff we dealt with to be helpful, friendly and efficient and they are a credit to the hotel.
The house is comfortable with pretty basic furnishings. The beds were particularly comfortable and the two rearmost bedrooms are a lot quieter than the front two. The Glenelg Highway (Parker Street) is pretty quiet at night although a few trucks start passing through from about 5 am onwards. There are freestanding wardrobes in each bedroom but, strangely, no coat hangers.
The central heating works very well so the house was warm and welcoming when we arrived and remained so throughout our stay. The open fire in the loungeroom was set up so we lit it after our dinner on the Friday night and again when we eventually got too cold sitting out on the verandah after we got back from lunch on Saturday afternoon. We really didn't need the fire but there was so much firewood, kindling etc that we couldn't resist it.
The kitchen is not set up for cooking but it has a fridge and microwave and plenty of crockery so we were fine for breakfasts and an antipasto platter we'd set up before leaving home. Separate mens and ladies amenities are at the rear of the house comprising a toilet, urinal, basins and two showers in the mens and two toilets, basins and two showers in the ladies. The house is serviced daily if you want it. A general store/coffee shop is about 150 metres down the street and off-street parking is provided at the rear of the house.
All in all, it was an enjoyable and very private stay.

This hotel is most definitely a step above the average country hotel in a small town. It has two eateries, the more casual Parker Street Project (with bar and outdoor seating) and the fine dining Wickens. There is a small pool. We stayed in a mountain view room which had a partial view. The room had plenty of natural light from huge glass windows with a sliding door to a small deck area with two seats. The room was spacious and clean and the bed very comfortable with quality bedding. The bathroom was equally spacious with a large, walk-in shower and stocked with nice smelling body wash, shampoo etc. The mini bar was stocked with quality chocolates and pre-mixed cocktails as well as wines from the area. We found the staff to be welcoming, professional and friendly. There are a number of walking trails that can be accessed from the hotel and it's smack in the middle of town. Another reviewer said it was overpriced and I agree the room tariff is steep. That's why I gave the hotel 4 instead of 5 stars. Having said that we greatly enjoyed our stay which included a personal, guided tour arranged by the hotel as part of our package. Would stay there again!

Our two day stay was wonderful. Also took the opportunity to visit Warrnambool and Port Fairy again while we were in the vicinity. Wickens Wine List is like an encyclopedia so if you love your wine but not an expert on them, it can seem a little daunting. Always someone there to help you choose but be prepared, they can very pricey. You can always have the menu (which was outstanding when we were there) with matched wines.

We have just spent the weekend staying at the Mt. Sturgeon Homestead in Dunkeld. This weekend was special for us as it was my 70th birthday and so our 3 children, their husbands and children all came together in the homestead. With 6 bedrooms, at least 4 bathrooms this is an ideal place for a family rendezvous. The homestead is very comfortably setup with multiple sitting areas, two internal dining areas, outside table and chairs and a good size kitchen. While we had a fantastic time and the views from the front balcony of Mt. Sturgeon were simply breathtaking and as were visits from the local kangaroos. However there were some things that let the place down. Unlike some previous reviewers I will not complain about the price but will make comment on some things that challenge the value:
1. This place is in desperate need of some basic maintenance, with door knobs falling off to the extent that when this happened it was impossible to re-enter from the side door.
2. Toilet seats need to fixed in fact they are a little dangerous when they are loose.
3. It was a nice touch that the Weber BBQ was made available, but it would have been nicer had it been cleaned in recent times or at least had cleaning tools.
available.
4. The kitchen needs to have a review of the tools and cutlery available, for example there was no corkscrew and sadly no where to buy one late in the afternoon
5. It would be a nice gesture to have a basic starter kit, ie. Oil, Salt, Pepper and a little cling wrap, again small things but when there is no local grocery store available it makes it difficult.

Dinner at Wickens, was truly an experience that all of our party enjoyed. The food was really different and an exploration of what can be done with the ingredients. The paired wines were wide ranging and for the average Australian an experience that will not have previously had.
All in all I would recommend to anyone to stay here, but be aware of the shortcomings and prepare for them. One last thing, we left on Monday morning and there was no one at the Hotel until the Wednesday and no instructions on what to do with the keys, a little odd!

Wonderful venue. My husband and I were celebrating our first year wedding anniversary and purchased a package from Red Balloon. It included one nights stay at the Royal Mail Hotel, a an 8 course Degustation dinner at Wickens (which ended up being 12 courses) and complimentary breakfast. It wasn't that long of a drive from Melbourne. Maybe 3 hours? The service from the staff was exceptional. The room was big and very clean with a great view of the Grampians. Everything was modern. The wifi was quite fast and reliable. The food at Wickens was awesome! It was all fresh from their garden and farm which is on site!

After a long drive had to spend time & get help to get the aircon working and replace the non functioning tv in our studio unit.
Sofa not comfortable and tiny table hard to share .
Bathroom tiles needed cleaning.
No toilet brush.
Not a good start ,quite dispiriting.
Bistro style food was over hyped by waiter.
Still pork & duck were good..
Rhubarb tart dessert truly awful .
Very heavy handed with the almond essence, not much rhubarb & awful tough pastry.
Waiter didn't ask why I could not eat it.
Next night's experience a bit like Fawlty Towers.
Taken down to old kitchen area for being 10 mins late.
Told[by senior male staffer] how we had to accept this for lateness.
After I expressed my wish to be moved back to the main dining area , we were later taken to a very nice table near the bar.
Female staff friendly and helpful. 3 male staff indeed snooty.
Sat. night food not as good as Friday's.

Hi Goodwile1, Due to COVID-19 restrictions, arriving late to a booking makes managing sitting times, table turnover and staffing more difficult. Hence, why we had to relocate you. The business is constantly having to adjust in this COVID-19 period. I’m sure you can imagine that that poses some challenges to us operationally. Your friend left a negative review the week that you stayed. We took our learnings from that review and have already discussed as a team how we can improve your experience. It is therefore, unfortunate to receive a similar negative review a week later. Peter

We also visited this ‘windy night’ when there was a power outage. Let’s be clear - power was out all over the region due to a bushfire, we feel unfair to make out that the hotel was only place effected. We were escorted to the other restaurant they have( which had a gas kitchen so could still cook food which couldn’t be done in the fine restaurant - was explained) it looked like all guests were transferred there and offered a decent meal complimentary - were you?yes it is a more casual affair, which was fine considering the circumstances. We were also offered a free return visit to the Wickens restaurant as compensation, which we took up and had a fabulous time. So yes, as other responders have said, we were offered an apology and compensation for something that was out of their control - seemed professional to us. Are you sure your dining companion hasn’t returned on the free visit without you! Haha

I’m assuming you intend to eat at Wickens rather than the more casual Parker St Project? The Royal Mail does not go in for ‘house’ wines, the cheapest Sav Blanc/Semillon I can see on their wine list is $45. However the Royal Mail is not a place to do on the cheap. Make it a special occasion, spend $100+ on a really nice bottle or do the Degustation with matching wines. Yes you will cring when you get your credit card statement but you won’t get the full experience if you try to skimp. Also ... try to do the tour of the Wine Cellar if you can. It’s $25 you get 3 or 4 tastings and the chance to ogle bottles only James Packer could afford.
