Detailed Reviews
My daughter and I stayed for one night at The Dukes in late June. It's an old pub with a colourful history, to which has been added a very nicely designed modern back section of lounge and dining room looking onto a garden. We had a great time socialising with the other guests in the cozy lounge, then dancing in the Town Hall for a kinder fundraiser. The Bed was comfortable and the ensuite fine. Graeme's hospitality is quite unique, the atmosphere is utterly homely and relaxed, and the breakfast, eaten with other guests in the lovely dining room, was seriously the best we have had. Thanks! Sue

If you want a comfortable bed in a unique, historic inn in a fantastic little town, the Dukes B&B has you covered. If you demand one of the best breakfasts available anywhere, Graeme is the man to beat. That's what we got. I imagine you'll get something similar.

We are a group of "older" couples who spend a weekend together somewhere in country Victoria a few times a year. To find B & B accommodation with 4 double rooms, each with an en suite, is not easy. The Dukes ticked all the boxes for us, plus a few. Graham provided the Value Added for us - Breakfast was plentiful, delicious and all prepared in his kitchen. (He even shared his recipes for his tasty roasted strawberries and pears!). Graham also offered to provide a Gourmet BBQ for us on one of our nights there. It was beyond all expectation - a most generous serving of all kinds of meat and sausages, salads and vegetables. One of our group has serious allergies which Graham kindly considered when serving him. We were most grateful for his offer as there is currently only one night time eatery in Clunes. His wife June's creative touch is evident in the pottery mugs and serving bowls used in the serving of food and coffee, and the delightful cottage garden visible from the many windows in the living areas. We highly recommend this delightful accommodation.

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed a two night stay at Dukes late January. Graham and June were terrific and attentive hosts. Breakfast - and the cottage garden- outstanding, as has been commented upon by others.
We were the only guests at the time and had sole use of very comfortable facilities in addition to our bedroom with relatively small but quite adequate en-suite.
Clunes has great charm and this accommodation was a true extension of the ambience. Although the Clunes Hotel or other restaurants are not open early week for meals. But we did very well with supplies for local supermarket.
Excellent value and recommended

We overnighted here while exploring some family history in Clunes. We don't do B&B often but this might change our minds. A great experience, starting with an early check-in at a beautiful old building which was tastefully and interestingly decorated. The room was a good size, air-conditioned with a comfy queen bed. Light filled bathroom with a really good shower, fluffy towels and robes. The hosts, Graham and June were very friendly and knowledgeable about the local area. A comfortable lounge area with TV is available for guests and we had free wi fi access.Graham's breakfast was a delight, home made muesli, roasted strawberries, scrambled eggs and bacon and real coffee.

This is probably the most charming hosted B&B we have stayed at. History seeps from every painstakingly cleaned brick. The 'laid back' ambiance, warm fireplace and plenty of reading material enhance the visit, as does Graeme's knowledge of the local area which he is more than willing to share.
We were greeted each morning by Graeme with a hearty "Good Morning" and an even heartier breakfast!
Great location with an easy walk to the restaurant, pub and shops. If you are visiting Clunes, make this place your stop.
If you are a rugby fan (and who shouldn't?), talk to Graeme about his playing history. If you are into gardening, take a stroll through the gardens and talk to June who will delight you with her knowledge.
We will be back!

Despite the cold, wintry weather we were lovely and cosy. Our hosts - Graeme and June were wonderful hosts. From welcoming us and settling us in to preparing a magnificent breakfast that we ate from thoughtfully chosen pottery pieces - including some made by June. The breakfast room & sitting area have a lovely ambience surrounded by the garden. It was only a short walk to the lovely local restaurant 'Lucky Strike' for a convivial evening meal. The museum and local shops are interesting and well presented. We would have no hesitation in recommending Dukes for a stay in Victoria's gold fields.

If you're travelling in the Ballarat or Maryborough region it's definitely worth the detour to the small town of Clunes to spend the night here. Booking less than a week before travelling, I hadn't checked any reviews but was so glad I found this hidden gem. The hosts are very welcoming and friendly and I loved the quiet location and beautiful views from both the lounge and dining rooms to the well kept garden. To complete the amazing night spent here was the very fulfilling breakfast of muesli and eggs/bacon served up the next morning.

What a delightful surprise behind the big old doors that are the entrance to The Dukes B & B. Graeme and June are very accommodating hosts, making sure we were comfortable, well feed and able to ask for any other thing we may have needed. June's pottery is also a wonderful touch and using them when having coffee or at breakfast just enhances an already wonderful personal experience. Thank you very much for a lovely stay at Clunes during the Ceramic Awards 2013.

The B & B itself is full of old world charm and cosy fires in winter. Graeme and June were wonderful hosts, making sure I had everything I needed - including wifi! However, the most memorable part of my stay was the breakfasts. I'm vegetarian so didn't have the meat products but there was certainly no lack of food! Baked pears with honey and cinnamon, home made toasted muesli with hazelnuts, almonds and dried fruits, marinated strawberries, mushrooms seared in butter and cooked with cream, grilled zucchini and tomato, sour dough toast and home made marmalade, eggs the way you like them. You could choose any and all of these things. I'd stay there again to experience that breakfast.
The only reason that I didn't give five stars was that the rooms aren't very sound proof. I was able to hear my neighbours talking on the phone and walking about their rooms. I was worried that every sneeze or creak of the bed might also be heard. Of course, this is no fault of the owners. They're perfectly lovely - it's just to prepare those who may be like to be a little boisterous :)
