Detailed Reviews
Well in these times when air travel is out, it is time to enjoy our own state. So a drive up the Calder Highway to Charlton over the Victorian section of the Great Dividing Range and yes it is warm it does not feel like the flu is ever about to hit.
Charlton is as central as you can get in Victoria so trips from here are easy and did I say it is warm weather up there!!!
But walk into "The Vale B&B, Vale of Avoca B&B and the welcome is warmer. Carmel & Benno treat you like a member of the family. Hearty cooked breakfast comfortable beds with television and small refrigerator yes toilet and shower facilities are down the hall but no issue even though this is a busy B&B.
Great balcony where you can sit out and enjoy a drink or pizza. Benno holds court in his bar which is the envy of every man who walks in!!!
It is really well stocked and please do not tell Benno it is cheap (but maybe I have a drink at expensive joints in Melbourne)
Sunday nights is Pizza night unfortunately we missed it and had to return to Melbourne on the Sunday.
They cater for events, have a couple of dining rooms, a great beer garden, did I say Benno has the best intimate bar but I did say how good is the balcony. It seems like it is the only place for Sunday morning coffee in Charlton (and yep it is good coffee)
Since returning, I have told my daughter guess where she is getting married!!!!
Time to look after Victorian Rural Hospitality businesses, they might not have been hit by fire this year but the region has had its share of Fire, Flood but when Carmel is cooking there is no famine.

After an unfortunate and stressful caravan mishap the Catherine’s came to our rescue providing accommodation, food and beverage, and generous hospitality.
We had the Sunday night gourmet pizzas in front of a log fire which was much very valued on the freezing June night. Our accom was a queen sized bed, lovely decor with private en-suite down the hall. Breakfast was generous served in a small cosy dining room with an open fire. We would highly recommend this stop on the Calder. Benny was a great host.

Booked in for pizzas on Sunday night. Best pizzas I’ve had in a long time. We were welcomed by the owners who made us feel like we were part of their family. Very hospitable people. Had drinks on comfy couches in front of open fire. Will definitely be going back here. Excellent service. Highly recommended. Judy

The Vale is a charming old hotel converted into a B&B. The owners, Carmel and Beno gave us a great country welcome and are made us feel right at home. The service was excellent. The rooms were clean and well catered for. The bed was large and comfortable, (important for taller guests). The breakfasts were home cooked and set us up for the day and the evening meals were top quality.
We had a most enjoyable stay and would recommend The Vale highly.

Stayed with Carmel and Benno for 1 night on a post lockdown road trip. We found our hosts very welcoming and accommodating, our room was lovely, heating was good and the bed was very comfortable. we slept well. We loved having a drink on the balcony and appreciated the various sitting rooms which would have been handy if we had stayed for more than one night. Bathroom was down the hall, but just for us and hot water was plentiful. Bennos bar was very intimate and we enjoyed sitting on the sofas beside the open fire. The Sunday pizza night pizzas were excellent, bases were nice and crispy and I recommend the lamb! Breakfast was excellent. Would definitely stay again next time we are up that way.

We stayed for two nights during the OK Motels festival and this place was an absolute dream. Hotel was beautiful with a great balcony accessible from the rooms, we had a lovely cooked breakfast out in the beer garden each morning, and our host Benno was so charming and accommodating. If you’re staying in the Charlton area, definitely stay here!!

We called into TheVale for dinner on Sunday for their pizza night our son has been working in Charlton. We were pleased with our choice because the owners are friendly and welcoming. The place is lovely and clean, the food was outstanding and the host was great to chat to. They have tables and couches near an open fire in their dining room and a great outdoor area which would be lovely when warmer. The food is reasonably priced and we really enjoyed our evening there.

Benno & Carmel are the perfect hosts. Lovely to chat to. Nothing was too much trouble. I did the unthinkable! I slept through my alarm (actually, I discovered later I had set it for 7.30 pm and not am), but Benno still cooked me a full breakfast despite my not rising until 9.30 am, which was incredibly kind of him. I'd come from Bendigo, a Unesco City of Gastronomy, but the breakfast here was much better than any I had in Bendigo. The place is lovely. Wifi. Your own in-room TV or watch in one of the two lounges. Tastefully done up in a period style. I had my own bathroom. They do try to give people their own bathrooms when they can. A gem of a place to stay.

Carmel and Beno were so attentive. They bent over backwards to make sure our stay went well. The accommodation was so comfortable, with extra spaces to chill and relax. The balcony was a real highlight. The cooked buffet breakfast was delicious, as was the food served at the function. The homemade pizzas are a must.
