Detailed Reviews
Has a mixture of powered and unpowered sites. Powered sites were the same price as unpowered; $29.20/night. Clean amenities with paper towel to dry hands. I was pleasantly surprised that there was a laundry including one dryer. Very small clothesline. Clean functional electric BBQ. Gravel driveways around the campground with a scant layer of gravel. The sites are mostly bare of grass so it would not be pleasant during wet weather. Multitude of picnic tables and toilet facilities dotted around the Buchan Caves Reserve.

We stayed 2 nights at this place. You can not call it a hotel, neither you call it a property - these are tents but they are put on a wooden platform and have all nessesity amenities of a 3-4 star hotel inside (queen size bed, a roll-away bed, a fridge a table etc) they provide you with all linen and towels and even shampoo, shower gel and a conditioner. The tent has a lockable door and a nice terrace which is a great place to be at night to listen to the sounds of nature around and spot a few possums on the tree in front ! The only thing the tent is missing is a bathroom but the communal one is a step away and it is really well maintained, no, it is not covered with marble, but it is, as said clean, and you can use it without beeing afraid ... The camp has a kitchen with all nessesity utensils and a BBQ area.
A few tips:
- these are tents ! Heating is only the one you generate - so be prepared, we started the night with our daughter in a separate bed but very soon she migrated and that was even more fun and more warmth ...
- starting from dusk all animals are around, do not miss !
- the caves are the must !
- try to get all your food and drinks beforehand the local store is a robbery and spaghetti seems to be the single item on offer
Very important, if you are booked be there before 3:30 pm otherwise the rangers will leave and you will have to find them. We managed to find ours at the nearest pub, so if you are still late check there !

I have just finished a short caravaning trip to Victoria (7 days )
When I visited the Buchan Caves on Labour day weekend..
I was thoroughly disgusted with the amenities.
2 toilets for approx 150 male campers ( quite possibly more ), 3 showers.
And to rub salt into the wound, $57 for a powered site and $50 for unpowered site.
I was paying $30 a night at Paynesville for a powered site with facilities 5 star to the Caves.
Vic. tourism should take a look at what they can do especially holiday periods.
It's a shame such a lovely place is marred by poor camping facilities.
I toured both caves, the guides were very informative and friendly and the caves were possibly the best I have ever seen (I'm 72 ).
I wouldn't hesitate in recommending a visit to the caves they are a real joy .

The cave tour was fantastic, however we made a poor decision to camp for a night over the Christmas break. Unfortunately the Parks allow very large groups of noisy campers to take over the entire camp site. People running around and kids screaming up until 11.45pm and then up at 6am at it again. The toilets and showers haven’t been updated since the 70’s and I’m not sure if they they were cleaned the day we stayed. I’d recommend the caves, but make it a day tour if you are heading there over Christmas.

Condition of the toilets and showers have gone by the way side. They USED to be kept lovely and clean but are in need of an overhaul and a bloody good clean.
Hopefully they’ll get their pool back soon and an upgraded kids playground wouldn’t go astray either. I hope Parks Victoria puts some more money into making this park a better place for families to visit and stay.

Buchan is hidden away in the hills and is very isolated. There is onee general store only in Buchan. This is a delightful child friendly park. It has kangaroos that come down from the forest into the park in the late afternoon.

Great family friendly campground with massive sites - campground laid out in old school style, lots of exotic trees, big grassy spaces for children to play and a playground and stream to explore too. The camp swimming pool was closed when we were there (early November) and the camp staff explained that it is fed with icy cold water from an underground stream and hence they only fill it when the temperature forecast is Very Hot!
Nevertheless our children had lots of fun exploring the camp ground and spotting kangaroos.
We went on some of the short walks around the campsite and saw lots of kangaroos. The cave tours are also well worth doing.
The camp kitchen was very basic sinks and an open fireplace - the bathrooms were very clean.
The cafe in town was a lifesaver - great food and coffees well worth a visit.

Before our stay at the beginning of October, we last stayed at Buchan Caves Reserve over 20 years ago. We enjoyed it then and this time around (now with kids in tow), we still enjoyed it. We camped in an unpowered site last time. Is time we booked at short notice into one of the two cabins. Website was quick and easy to use and staff were helpful when we rang up to organise a check-in after the staff had left for the day. The cabin is a little bit tired, but very clean and unlike some motel rooms we stayed in recently, had everything we needed. Yep...we learned too that the hot water service is small, but once you know that you can manage it or just use the main shower block 50m away. The kids loved waking up to kangaroos grazing on the lawn just outside the cabin. As others have remarked, the Reserve and the facilities are immaculately kept. We did a tour of the Royal Cave with a very friendly and informative guide. Great tour. The cave was just magnificent.
We would have liked to stay a bit longer, but had to keep going. We'll be back and would certainly recommend this to others for anything from a day visit to a longer stay. It sits at the foothills of the Alps and there's much to see and do in the area, either on foot or by car.
