We stayed one night in this hotel in order to attend a special birthday event. Our 12 year old grandson was with us. From the moment we entered the reception foyer, we were impressed. Staff were friendly, helpful and courteous. It was the first time in one of the Accor art hotels. There were many of Chen (the artist) prints decorating the walls of the bedrooms, the corridors and the foyers. Our grandson was given a package containing a canvas and paint set. It was great for children to experience many of the prints and discuss the stories behind them, and to encourage them to produce a painting if their own. Our room was equipped with a kitchen sink, toaster, crockery and glasses. The view from our room looked across at the nearby hillsides. Although, it was winter, the weather was warm so we made use of the roof top pool, which was clean and quiet. There are many restaurants nearby and Box Hill station is close, with a tram running nearby.

We stay at the Chen at least 3 - 4 times a year, as it is close to where our son lives. We have been doing this for several years now and it is wonderful to return each time and the little touches that the hotel provides. It is only small, but we prefer mugs for tea and coffee, the hotel ensures they are in our room each stay, even though they are not in every room anymore. As gold Accor members, there is always a welcome gift, which includes drinks for both of us. It always surprises me when some Accor hotels only provide one drink for the member not the partner. And a handwritten note welcoming us back. Our granddaughter spends some nights with us, this is never a problem, they are happy to provide whatever we need to accommodate this. The location is excellent! Next door to Box Hill Central, easy access to a tram straight into the city or the train. Lots of shops for anything you need plus close to Doncaster and Chadstone. Great restaurants with a variety of choice. The only issue we have had is that sometimes housekeeping can be a bit hit and miss, this varies between visits, and it is not often enough that we would choose somewhere else to stay at present. When we have had problems the on-duty manager is always receptive, last visit they came up quite late to help us troubleshoot a problem with the TV. It is one of the most welcoming hotels we have stayed at.

Booked the king deluxe with the kitchen amenities. A strange hybrid between a self service apartment and hotel. Basic items like towels, dental and slippers is supplied upon request along with room made up. Bin was not emptied upon arrival and was quickly addressed by friendly room keeping staff (not an issue).
The negatives (reason for losing 1 star) -
Aircon did not emit enough cool air despite being on the lowest setting resulting in stuffy humidity (it was a hot day about 30 deg). Bathroom shower appears not to be waterproof sealed as leakage is apparent (Room 307). Similar reviews indicate the same issue it seems.

The positives- Friendly staff (shout out to Olivia) who was extremely helpful and friendly… also on getting the BBQ started. We had a family BBQ on the rooftop set amongst the beautiful swimming pool on a lovely summer day. Great fun. Witnessed the staff doing a fanatic job with maintenance and cleaning the BBQ and common areas. The Gym is superb with first class equipment (for someone who frequents 5 star hotels).

Overall would be happy to return and hope the above issues are resolved.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful and honest review Eric, I really appreciate you putting in the time to share your experience and we're glad that it was primarily good. I'm so sorry about our Air Con issues we currently have contractors in now going floor by floor to locate the issue so hopefully upon returning this will no longer be a worry. As you said the showers are an ongoing issue we are trying to rectify, because it appears to be a design flaw we are trying to find a widespread solution we can implement in all the rooms but this unfortunately takes a little time. Hopefully this too will be fixed and we appreciate guests sharing their concerns as it brings these issues to light and they can be fixed. I hope you have a lovely day. Kind Regards, Olivia

Very friendly staff who are let down by low staffing levels-almost working alone and unrealistic expectations by management to not only manage check ins and departures, bookings and enquiries but are also required to go to the rooms themselves if there is an issue. Not sure if this is due to covid absences, inability to obtain and retain staff or cost cutting.

Our air conditioner in the room was not working effectively, the staff member at the front desk came to assist but was unable to fix. A new room was offered which we accepted the next day and worked well.

There is confusion over cleaning in the rooms when staying more than one night. Printed handouts advise you to either put out the "make up my room" sign or leave it off the door. The room was not made up the next two days and then discovered that you had to request this service. This was not clear and meant that tea, shampoo, soap, toilet paper were not replenished. We were happy that the towels did not need to be replaced every day, however there needs to be clarity over this service. At nearly $300 per day for a suite for 4, I would expect at a minimum that toiletries and tea/coffee making items were replenished.

We enjoyed the rooftop bbq area and rooftop pool but there are no working lights on the rooftop bbq area.

We have stayed at the Chen in the last 2-3 years and the level of cleanliness and staffing has sadly lowered. We understand that covid issues and multiple lockdowns have had an effect on the hotel. There are large residential towers attached to this hotel though and it feels like they too have been somewhat neglected in regards to building upkeep.

We choose to stay in this hotel in Box Hill due to its great location to public transport and food outlets. Before staying here again we would want to see an increase in staffing levels and room upkeep to warrant the cost of the accommodation.

We would like to commend the staff who under very difficult circumstances of understaffing and expectations are friendly, warm and helpful.

I booked a last minute staycation at The Chen last weekend and from the moment I booked it I knew I’d made the right choice. The staff were lovely, the room was gorgeous and the beds were comfy. T2 teas and Nesptesso coffee were available in the rooms and they had really nice products in the available in the bathroom too. Great hotel in a really handy place with really great service. I would definitely stay there again.

This is not a 4.5 star and definitely not up to the standard of other Art series hotels which are usually Premium standard. This was below par. The check in and check out were the only pluses for this hotel along with the location. The room was dirty with black hairs in the sink and shower along with the bathroom. The cups were not washed properly and overall the room felt grotty. There was rubbish under the beds so the hotel needs to invest in better cleaners. The toilet seat was loose which was dangerous. Overall this is okay for a 2-3 star but not for what it advertises. The Art series are better than this hotel. No room service and the QR code in the room promotes Deliveroo??? Update your rooms people!!!! The hotel is only 6 floors of the 35 floors with dogs going to and from the property.

Hi! I usually get a taxi or an Uber. You can ask the reception to book you a fixed rate of $88 taxi from The Chen, Box Hill to the airport. Regardless of the traffic condition the rate will be the same. Or you can take the train and jump off to Flinders station, from there take the Sky Bus. I hope this helps.

Thank you for your question. Epworth is a short 4 minute walk from the hotel. The area is very safe to take the scroll. There is also taxis availble in the area if you would prefer. Kind Regards Colin Stevenson General Manager
