Detailed Reviews
The environment was good and the room was very clean. The location was also good out of the main town, a 20 minutes walk through the historic houses and parks.
We had a drive around 45 KMs, and walk close to 14 KMs on the day in Beechworth and we did enjoy the day with variety of activities in a very pristine environment.

This hotel is situated at Mayday Hills, the grounds of the historic lunatic asylum. The gardens are fantastic and the historic buildings dotted around make it all the more interesting. It is a lovely downhill walk into town, around 1 km or a little more. Walking back up is good exercise! The rooms were very clean and comfortable with some minor defects such as scratches on doors, but there was a great king size bed and our room had lovely view looking out to the woodland of tall gum trees. It is a very quiet location, no traffic noise. Currently the hotel provides a continental breakfast with the room tariff. One of the stand out things for us was the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff, especially Kieren, Ellie and Karen.

+1
A Travel Auctions trip resulted in us being located in a room that was on the tired side. Comfortable enough, and the only minor blemish on what would prove an awesome stay. The staff were so good in fact that it led me to wondering whether there was anything I could want for. The answer was no! Frankly, the staff are dedicated to ensuring the best possible experience.
Breaky was great, no issues, and then there's the evening meal offerings. OMG. Night one I ordered a steak and the wife swordfish. The price of the steak was on the low side, it was cooked to perfection (medium), the peppercorn sauce was to die for, the taste of the combination that included duck fat cooked potatoes, roasted cherry tomatoes and asparagus was simply out of this world. It was fabulous. Combined with great service, it offered a nice ambience, the drinks were cold and the staff amazing.
Well, things only got better!
Following our first night indulgent we decided to share a Parma and the result was spectacular! A huge chicken fillet halved for us by the chef, came with a sumptuous salad that looked and tasted great. The presentation and staff were, again, excellent, above and beyond.
Our desserts were simply unbelievable (lemon panna Cotta and cheese platter). The platter so huge, we simply couldn’t eat more than half, resulting in the waitress taking it away and representing it with additional food for us to take back to our room. Amazing!
Over to you to check the images. Recommended!

They have a bewt website and lovely staff who I booked with on the phone... and so we thought we would pay a bit extra and stay somewhere nice.
It wasn't nice at all. So disappointed.
The room was dingy with hooks on the wall but no art, no doona cover - the doona was between two sheets...very ordinary. We stayed at a motor lodge the week before for $100 less that was 10x nicer. We have a baby and needed enough space for her cot which meant a king size room at $182. We thought it would at least have a bath but it didn't. The pool and sauna were closed.
The restaurant was empty and after seeing our room we didn't want to spend any more money here nor did we trust that the food would impress us or look like it did on the website and so we ordered pizza which we had to collect in Beechworth by car.
Even the parking lot is not near the entrance to the hotel and so it was difficult to bring our stuff in (again, we have a baby so lots of stuff and never enough hands). I used the luggage trolly to bring our stuff in but the wheels were flat...all of the staff seemed aware of this, like the wheels are always flat and yet no one fixes it.
Also, I am pretty sure I could have saved heaps by booking with one of the booking platforms but I wanted to support the hotel fully as I'm sure they've had a rough go during covid. I feel duped by the website and it's frustrating. We rarely splash out for a nice place and this time we splashed but we were fooled. Shame.

We had a small wedding in the grounds but didn't stay at the hotel or eat at the restaurant. The hotel was very accommodating and let us set up an Arbor in the grounds for the wedding and let us use some of their chairs at no added cost, we just had to clean them. The grounds have some magnificant old trees and some fabulous locations for wedding photos.

The idea of staying in the old lunatic asylum in the grounds seemed appealing but I didn’t expect the tired old rooms with damp up the walls, the doors on the bathroom not be able to close, the wifi not being able to be connected to, only instant coffee and having to leave by 8.30 and the breakfast not even started. This may be only the room we were in as could see the others but we paid the same price as everyone else. However, The worst was the one staff member who checked us in and then the only one we saw in the morning when we left acted at every time as it was the worst imposition we were there. In these times basic friendliness makes you forget and Forgive the little things but this was a poor experience. 3 out of 5 is me being generous in the covid times

Overall it was ok. The room was very small and it's the first hotel I have been in where there wasn't even one drawer in the bedroom. There was a hanging closet but no drawers. Very strange. I had to put my clothes under the bathroom sink. The shower was also very difficult to adjust and there was little pressure. Poor wifi connection in room. No Optus phone connection in room.Continental breakfast was very meagre. We stayed for two nights. It was not too bad but I wouldn't stay again.

We stayed here a couple of nights and were disappointed in the size of the room - it was small and for travellers, there was no where to put one's stuff without tripping over everything. It would be ok for a local get-away, where each has a small backpack of a change of attire but for anyone on a lengthy trip - like us, it was way too small. Even the fridge must have been the smallest bar fridge on the market! However, we were grateful that there was a fridge, at least! The bathroom area was adequate of which we were happy. The room itself was clean albeit a bit tired. Maybe some overhead shelves might help with storage of guests' things? We would not stay here again. However, in its favour, the grounds and environment were excellent - and it was in a quiet, almost on the edge of town location (certainly not within easy walking distance of the town). It had a good restaurant and bar. Many thanks to the staff both seen and unseen for their efforts to make visitors feel welcome. We appreciated the small guest lounge, which we made use of, as there was no where in the room, other than on the bed to sit.

Stayed 3 nights. Rooms basic but totally adequate. Used the restaurant on two of the nights and food was excellent. We loved sitting on the deck out front. Staff were really welcoming and accomodating. Beautiful location. Beechworth town just a couple of minutes away by car. We used the location as a base for 3 days cycling through rail trails and we’ll be back for more soon.

Being able to walk through the historic town of Beechworth was lovely, the staff are very nice at the hotel and restaurant. Only bad thing is the size of the room but the grounds are beautiful. It felt very homely, with free bikes to be able to borrow to go for a ride. I will recommend this place to people driving to Melbourne and aren’t in a rush, possibly even stay two nights to just have a relax away from the city life.
