The Art Deco hotel was one of a very few accommodation options available in Beechworth when we booked a few weeks ago. The reviews were not great, so we weren’t expecting much. We booked in for a two night midweek stay. We were met by a new manager (who started a week ago) so maybe he’ll turn things around for the hotel.

Our room on the ground floor was small and clean. So was the bathroom, although a bit of mould was starting to bloom near the ceiling. The bed was comfy enough. The open window and desktop fan helped with the summer heat. Although we could hear the noise of early morning guest departures, the kookaburras were more pleasant.

A breakfast basket was dropped off shortly after we arrived, with 3 cereal packets, 2 milk, 4 slices of bread and toppings for toast. I’m not sure if it was supposed to last us two mornings, and we didn’t receive another.

Our room wasn’t serviced after our first night. Not really a big deal, but unexpected. Other than the manager when we checked in, we didn’t see another staff member in our 48 hour stay. Staffing issues, perhaps?

Overall, the hotel was cheap and suited us. It is a bit tired, though (e.g. wall plaster is chipping), and could be amazing with a makeover and bit of investment.

Great little stay, originally booked one night upon check in asked if we could make two nights due to tour being unavailable till next night. No problem at all changed in a couple of minutes, room was comfortable and warm once heating kicked in. Ensuite had all we needed hot water in shower etc. Breakfast bowl for next morning in fridge ready for us with cereal, bread, juice and milk etc. Brooke and Warren were always busy but made time for a friendly chat and recommended places to eat and to make bookings as Beechworth itself was exceptionally busy. We really enjoyed our stay and would stay again.

The room we stay in was spacious and clean with a comfortable bed. Bathroom was large and had a fantastic shower. Facilities a little out dated, but it added to the old charm of the place. Location was great proximity to the Asylum if you are looking at doing a ghost or historical tour of the grounds. Deano at the front desk was so lovely and welcoming on our arrival, great guy! Would definitely stay again, thanks for having us!

We stayed at the Linaker Art Deco Motel on 26 March 2022 Room 306. Never again.

As we went to bed, we physically locked the door to our room. Some time during the night (probably round midnight), we were woken by someone trying to get into our room! When questioned the person advised us that he wanted to clean the room and he was sorry. I asked him how he was able to gain entry to our room and he said he was the night manager!

So, he was able to override the physical lock. I am not sure why he wanted to invade our room at midnight. Perhaps to look around …. Perhaps he was incompetent – after all he should have known it was occupied! Perhaps he had other motives. Nevertheless, it’s a bit hard to get back to sleep after someone has attempted to break into your room.

The facility is old and tired. Calling it an Art Deco establishment is a bit rich. Sure, there were Art Deco features, but it’s a bit like calling your 4 year old’s painting a masterpiece.
The non-smoking room smelled of smoke, the corridors smelt “funny” and the whole place was just a little bit run down (despite some attempts to modernise the rooms). And yes I know its only rated at 3 Star but I was let down on so many matters.

My partner booked the spa suite for our overnight stay while attending a seminar in Beechworth.
Myself and others I know attending the seminar are gluten free. I asked the man at reception if they had gluten free bread or cereal for mine and other’s breakfasts. He said they don’t stock gluten free as it isn’t asked for and it would go off. I suggested he put the bread in the freezer as he did the other bread provided. Fortunately, a staff member brought some bags of gluten free cornflakes to us.
Our bed was the most uncomfortable my partner and I slept in and we had sore neck and back next morning.
A friend staying there had an electrical problem in their room and had no fridge, kettle, toaster or tv working. The man at reception blamed them for the electrical fault and wouldn’t shift them to another room and wouldn’t agree to monetary compensation.
We had stayed at the Linaker before and it was clean and staffed by friendly helpful people.
Such a shame the new owners aren’t the same.
I will never stay at the Linaker again

Absolutely disgusting, the room and the entire motel is dirty, old, dated and smells. The place had no power when I arrived, I was sent away (told to come back later) and told I couldn’t check in and because of the power issue they weren’t able to dry towels for the rooms. My bedding is damp and smells like it’s sat in a washing machine wet for days. The manager Dean swears his head off at reception and walks around with no shoes or socks on at all. All you can hear from the rooms is him yelling down the hallway from reception. I’m half tempted to just go and sleep in the car instead of laying here in this sh#t hole. Whatever you do - don’t waste your money!!!

The location is so beautiful with parkland all around. There are no bells and whistles with this basic accommodation but the unit set up is 2 bedrooms (1 queen and 1 single) sharing a small bathroom with excellent water pressure in the shower. Great heating in the bedrooms and the beds were extremely warm and comfortable - important as it gets cold in this rattling old building. Great to be in such a lovely old building and exactly what I was looking for in regards to price, cleanliness and location.

My partner and I recently took a road trip to Beechworth. We wanted to just cruise along and not book anything until we got there. It was a Friday and the town was busy. Every motel, Airbnb’s was booked out. We only needed one night. By chance I stumbled upon this motel and they had a room and charged me $220 for it. I didn’t think much about it but when we got there, the room was bearable, but the wifi was shocking. It didn’t work most of time we were there. We had to rely on data but unfortunately we were in a location that was close to a black spot for reception. The bed was comfortable enough but the fridge was so badly frosted that even turning it off for a few hour didn’t do a good job of defrosting. One part of the ceiling was so badly damaged by water problems that it looked like it could cave in anytime. I understand that it was a last minute booking and we were charged a premium. But the rate we paid did not match the minimum standards at all. In not so busy times the average room rate is 120. Have to say the property does have a lot of potential. Just needs a conglomerate to buy it renovate and bring it to a luxury standard. That’s all

Do not book this place, absolutely disgusting lack of basic empathy and respect. My mother booked us a weekend away here, but the day before tested positive for covid.

We called and emailed the hotel repeated to ask if we could reschedule or cancel the booking, but nobody would answer. On the day of the booking we finally got through to the hotel. They were incredibly rude to my mother, who was clearly quite ill and distressed at that point. They said that they did not believe she had tested positive for covid and would not allow for the trip to be rescheduled or for a full refund to be provided. They told her she needed to get a PCR test to prove that she was sick.

At this time, it was near impossible to get a PCR test, and the government guidance is in fact to no longer get one if you have tested positive on a RAT. So this motel were telling my 65 year old mother, against government advice, to take herself to a testing centre when very ill and wait there for up to 5 hours to get an unnecessary test, or they would not provide a refund.

On top of all this they were incredibly rude on the phone and left her completely beside herself.

Absolutely disgusted.

Disappointing stay over 2 nights. The powerpoints in our room stopped working so we had no fridge (to keep our 3.5yr old daughter’s food cold), no TV, no way of using the kettle/toaster provided for making breakfast, no way of charging phones, etc. The owner blamed us, offering no solutions such as another room or a tradesperson to repair it immediately, and said we “caused the power outage and because he’d have to call an electrician next week he wasn’t giving us even $1 in compensation because it was our fault”. He was rude and arrogant. I’d never stay here again or recommend it to others. There were other issues we had inc. some attention to detail re: housekeeping (i.e. dirty cutlery placed back with the clean cutlery, food items being removed from our room) but these could easily be forgiven if better customer service from the owner and a commitment to kindness, compassion and understanding had been applied. “I don’t care if you don’t come again” was his attitude, “because I can get more customers from booking.com and other sites”. Such a shame for beautiful Beechworth. We’d stayed here before a number of times before this owner took over. What a disaster!
