Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The good thing about this property (“Captain Cook Hotel” under the new name “Clover Backpackers”) is the location, near Oxford Street, but that’s pretty much it! The rooms are quite a mess, full of dust and the bunk beds are old and worn-out. In the kitchen aren’t any plates or cutlery, you need to get it from the reception for a 10$ deposit and in the fridge we saw mold!! Also it’s very loud in the evening, because there’s directly a bar. WiFi isn’t working and the toilets and shower facilities needs to get improved (very dirty and old as well)! The new owner is really, really rude and disrespectful! He kicked us out of the Hostel and called the police in the middle of the night, because we smoked some cigarettes on the balcony (there was a ashtray on the table and no sign that smoking is not allowed). Very bad attitude and experience! If you want to have a nice time and a good accomodation in Sydney, do yourself a favour and do not stay there (although it is very cheap)

Very good value accommodation with a fantastic location to the city! Travelling with my girlfriend and we stayed here, very friendly staff and comfortable rooms and clean amenities. Nothing flash - but far better than we expected, would happily stay here again, especially given the value! Highly recommend the bistro downstairs especially for backpackers - delicious food, well priced for backpackers and a friendly chef too, a very good experience all in all! Great service, thank you!

We (two girls aged 20) had booked the room online and when we arrived we were greeted with a very welcoming and helpful staff who were very sweet and helpful. While we were there, there was a renovation of the whole place, but this was at no time a problem or a nuisance. We enjoyed following the development of the place, from a worn out place to being super nice clean and new. Every day, we were greeted with smiles and friendly jokes from the employees and residents. we felt at home quickly and chose to stay the same place when we were getting home to Denmark from Australia (we flew from Sydney) We would definitely recommend the place to people who would like to live a place for backpackers who want to stay cheap but do not want to lose the fun and personal place surrounded by people who are passionate about creating a good atmosphere and doing their job the best they can and help with as much as they can.

this hostel has only one thing: that makes you want to find a better one. Small bedroom (and when I say small it's because you can't move in it); dirty kitchen, bathroom that smells like piss, broken fridges, no WiFi. I payed 20$ per night but it worth 5. Boys and girls have separated floors. Worst ever

It was discusting! Don’t chose this place for even just one night. It smelled like piss, was dirty everywhere, the madrasses in bed was slept out and had stains all over, - they even smelled like piss too. The kitchen was so dirty that we chose to eat out, and not making our own food. We didn’t want to take showers, because of the dirtyness, and the restroom didn’t even have light in it. The fridge was so disqusting that we kept our food-cooler out of it. I believe the building was filled with fungus too, because the carpets were wet and it smelled a lot. Both my friend and I got ill after only one night there. This place is so bad, you should NOT pick this place. Watch your own safety! Even though it’s a cheap place, then pay a little extra another place and take care of your health. I would NEVER recommend this place to others!

Had a very nice stay for one night. The bathroom and kitchen are pretty basic. But the bed and room was very nice, very clean. Appreciated the fresh white bed linen and bath towel. And the complementary drink, plus a discount on the meal - vegetarian Nachos was a lovely meal and all the bar and restaurant staff were really kind. Nice atmosphere with a bit of live music too. Thanks for having me.

The worst room I've lived in. We couldn't lock the door, the cleaners never locked it after they were in the room so it was open for others a couple of hours every day.... Our room was on the 1st floor and there was 0% chance to sleep before the band stopped playing so you can't be tired and want to sleep before 00.00 if you stay there over the weekends. There were holes in the ceiling, insects on the floor and in the bookshelf. The toilets was nasty, the toilet paper often ran out and wasn't refilled until the next day. The bar was nice and the staff was really friendly thought.

At a 20 dollar per night offer found on booking.com, who could say no to staying here? Until my friends found a used condom under their bed and stains on all of their sheets. I felt dirty after taking a shower, because I was fighting off a cockroach the whole time. Cockroaches everywhere. I've never written a bad review before, but this hostel needs to get its act together or nobody will stay there.
