The award winning Hughenden (circa 1870) is a gracious historic hotel at the heart of Woollahra, in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs. Associated with Australia's first philosopher, The Hughenden experienced many changes from grand residence to Masonic Hall to Ladies College. In 1993, The Hughenden commenced a programme of extensive restoration, redeveloping it into a beautiful boutique hotel. The last refurbishment in 2017 refreshed the hotel whilst preserving its old-world grandeur and character. The historic features such as the marble fireplaces, the original grand staircase, and servant bells are still prevalent today. Visitors are welcome to experience the warmth, charm and personal service offered by our hotel. With 32 Heritage Rooms, Pet Friendly Accommodation, Cafe, Lounge Bar and Event spaces, The Hughenden has unique offerings for all to experience and enjoy.

Detailed Reviews
Hotel was charmingly old with a lovely common lounge warmed with a fire place and a quaint bar. Our family room was exactly what we required - warm, clean and the beds were comfortable. Breakfast cafe was perfect and staff were lovely. Perfect location as we went to the new Allianz Stadium.

What a lovely little hotel. Old world charm with amazing staff. I misplaced my phone on the way to the hotel and they went to all ends to help me find it. Breakfast was included, nice touch and didn't expect this. Room was very comfortable and slept so well.
Definitely my go to place when coming to Sydney.

A beautiful place with an attentive service and clean rooms. The hotel is very well situated in a nice neighborhood near Centennial Park. The local village has good options to get food and drinks. Supermarket, bus station, drug store… all nearby. We can recommend this place very highly

Good hotel in a convenient location. East check in and check out. Good shower and comfy bed, not noisy despite being on a busy intersection. The breakfast options could be better. Staff if friendly and helpful.

In a geat location with lots of character, comfy, clean.
Just one bus straight into city or to Bondi.
Breakfast was simple but plenty.
Staff were polite. Room was a little pokey.
Would definitely return.

Looked great in photos but pretty poor in person. Arrived 6pm and nobody on duty. Received email with info on room and key which was fine. There was no elevator and nobody around to help with bags. Had an awful time lugging our large bags from our 3 week trip up the stairs.
Bathroom had the tiniest sink I’ve seen. Like prison cell size. And it leaked.
Would not stay here again.

Coming into Sydney during the pandemic doesn’t feed the senses as she, as a whole, is well below ‘par’. However the Hughendon, looks like it has been tracking south since the last pandemic! Staff are pleasant but the facility itself is over priced - trading as it is on its location. A good clean is in order.

The room was small but the welcome was huge.
Delightful breakfasts included.
Lovely peaceful downstairs lounge.
Easy access to bus.
Great pubs nearby.
Close to Emanuel Synagogue and it’s kosher!!
Local shops are interesting as are the houses in the back streets.

As it did last time we stayed here, it feels like we are coming home. Lovely staff and cosy clean environment. Awesome older, historic boutique hotel. Great location. Great value. Can’t wait to come back again.

This review is based on the shoddy and totally unacceptable behaviour with my reservation made through booking.com for a 4 night stay from 30th Dec 2018 – 3rd Jan 2019
I made the reservation in early February. It was not a “cheap” choice and naturally the price for the NYE was considerably more expensive than the other nights. I had various correspondence with the hotel, including booking an additional night to check out on 4th January. In March I received notification of their NYE policy, which stated their minimum stay over the holiday period and that 50% of the accommodation would be charged to my credit card on 1st June 2018 with the balance in full in November 2018. I confirmed that this was acceptable to me.
In early May I received notification from Booking.com that the Hughenden wished to increase the cost by a few AUD. I accepted this – as it was not a huge amount. Imagine my anger and frustration to receive a call from Booking.com – a couple of weeks later to be informed that the Hughenden again wanted to increase the cost of the accommodation. This time by over 600 AUD. I told the representative from Booking.com that I would not accept this increase. I had specifically booked the accommodation early to ensure that I had a choice of reasonably priced accommodation, I had flights booked and that this was totally outrageous behaviour on the part of the hotel. Many of my other choices were now booked up. Attempts were made by Booking.com to negotiate with the hotel – but they refused to budge. This felt like extortion, so I was left with no alternative but to look for another hotel. It has cost me more than the originally booking, but at least I have the satisfaction of not paying the Hughenden a penny more than the agreed amount.
Don’t expect this hotel to honour your booking. You could be left high and dry.

Response from TheHughendenHotel, General Manager at The Hughenden Boutique Hotel
Responded 10 June 2018
Hello Jacqueline, Thanks for taking the time to write us this feedback. I would really appreciate if you could contact us directly to rectify this issue with booking.com and so we can look after you! We do NOT alter rates once a booking has been made. This is an issue caused by Booking.com and we have never had problems like this before. I would like to understand what happened to you exactly so we can fix this asap. Unfortunately I am not able to find a booking.com reservation under the name above so please contact us so we can get this sorted. I apologize in advance for all the inconvenience that this have caused you. We would love to have you staying with us for NYE and I hope that we have a chance to correct this miscommunication issue between you and booking.com. Our hotel has always honored all online bookings and would never do such a thing. Looking forward to hear from you. Liza
