The award winning Hughenden (circa 1870) is a gracious historic hotel at the heart of Woollahra, in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs. Associated with Australia's first philosopher, The Hughenden experienced many changes from grand residence to Masonic Hall to Ladies College. In 1993, The Hughenden commenced a programme of extensive restoration, redeveloping it into a beautiful boutique hotel. The last refurbishment in 2017 refreshed the hotel whilst preserving its old-world grandeur and character. The historic features such as the marble fireplaces, the original grand staircase, and servant bells are still prevalent today. Visitors are welcome to experience the warmth, charm and personal service offered by our hotel. With 32 Heritage Rooms, Pet Friendly Accommodation, Cafe, Lounge Bar and Event spaces, The Hughenden has unique offerings for all to experience and enjoy.

I had cosy room which is a double bed and small room best for one person in the room. I’ve stayed in past years and had nice rooms in the category, but I got a dingey horrible room with no outside view at all and it smelt of sewer type smell. No where to put your case or anything, or a chair to sit on. Wasn’t even cheap! It is in great need of a renovation, dogs were yapping and are allowed in the sitting room etc. which is rather invasive. It’s gone right off but used to be rather quaint and sedate… not now!

Stayed 3 nights . Disappointing to have to request room service on the 3rd day. Room was dingey with no outlook. Room was clean . Bed was old and uncomfortable. Breakfast that is included in the price is a coffee and muffin/toast or coffee and yoghurt Hotel is old with worn out carpets and very much in need of refurbishment. No reception after 3pm , no bar or cafe facilities after 3pm .

I stayed here for 3 nights in December, using it as a base to catch up with friends. The positives: This is no cookie-cutter hotel, being an historic home so it feels fun and unusual staying here. My queen room had a small sitting area with chaise lounge and desk (neither of which I used) but handy to have. The location, on the beautiful Queen Street Woollahra shopping strip, Oxford St literally around the corner and stunning Centennial Park across the road, not to mention a quick drive to Westfield Bondi Junction, the city and the airport, makes it a winner every time. The car parking with the electronic security gate at $33/day is a bargain compared to getting a ticket so all good there although I was never convinced reception had actually worked out how many customers…

During the last four years, I’ve stayed at ‘The Hughie’ on 6 occasions, twice with my wife and with a cricketing mate for the SCG test in January on four occasions. The SCG and SFS are an easy 10 minute stroll away, and buses run into the city and Bondi along Oxford Street every few minutes. The building is full of charm and history, and the rooms have been tastefully renovated and are maintained in spotless condition. The staff are courteous, polite and accomodating.

Coming into Sydney during the pandemic doesn’t feed the senses as she, as a whole, is well below ‘par’. However the Hughendon, looks like it has been tracking south since the last pandemic! Staff are pleasant but the facility itself is over priced - trading as it is on its location. A good clean is in order.

The hotel is in a great location and has car parking. We stayed in a Queen Suite which was clean and comfortable. We also liked the fact there was a lounge area to relax in and a upper level deck with tables and chairs. There is a cafe which opens until 3.00pm, at the front of the hotel, which is very convenient. Our experience was very pleasant and we found the staff friendly and helpful. We'd certainly stay there again, as you can't beat the awesome location of the hotel.

My husband and I have stayed in this hotel several times before,& I wonder if it has changed ownership. It’s lost it’s warmth & friendly staff, & the charming antique furniture in the king room we stayed in was gone. At $250/ night we expected a welcome back, but had 2 women at reception telling us they knock off at 3pm & nobody is around till 7am, so if you lock yourself out bad luck. At 7.20 this morning there was nobody at reception to call us a taxi. The breakfast is not worth having. We were issued with vouchers which entitled us to 1 item & a drink. Two pieces of toast with Vegemite & a coffee was it, & my husband was charged 60 cents extra for soy milk in his coffee!!- I think that’s cheap & rude. On the positive side, the bed was comfortable & the room clean. The…

Very unhappy experience. Incorrect date was booked for my stay. Tried calling a number of times to hotel phone number to amend but went staight to voicemail. Messaged on booking.com multiple times and only received a reply the morning after the incorrect date of stay and following the hotel debiting my account for the full fare. The response was that a refund is not able to be offered.

The Hughenden is in an awesome location. Environment and rooms clean and comfortable. Bath is fantastic. The shortened reception hours attributed to COVID is disappointing. Whilst we were busy and only there overnight I missed being able to say hello to staff as we came and left the hotel at various times. It seems that as much of the check in and check out procedure as possible has been automated. For me, staying in a Boutique Hotel is about personal service and attention, and this simply felt as though it had been minimised as much as possible. Would I stay there again? Maybe. But then given the level of service and the room rate, I'd probably look for an Airbnb for about the same price in the area. The only expectation then is a clean property.
