The award winning Hughenden (circa 1870) is a gracious historic hotel at the heart of Woollahra, in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs. Associated with Australia's first philosopher, The Hughenden experienced many changes from grand residence to Masonic Hall to Ladies College. In 1993, The Hughenden commenced a programme of extensive restoration, redeveloping it into a beautiful boutique hotel. The last refurbishment in 2017 refreshed the hotel whilst preserving its old-world grandeur and character. The historic features such as the marble fireplaces, the original grand staircase, and servant bells are still prevalent today. Visitors are welcome to experience the warmth, charm and personal service offered by our hotel. With 32 Heritage Rooms, Pet Friendly Accommodation, Cafe, Lounge Bar and Event spaces, The Hughenden has unique offerings for all to experience and enjoy.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

This hotel has old world character and charm. The room we were in had high ceilings with a moderate amount of room. The bathroom was very small and narrow. The bed was super comfortable. They have a small cafe at the front of the hotel and the coffee was decent. It is easy walking to the Main Street and across the road are the Paddington gates to Centennial Park.

We visited for one Saturday night with friends, choosing the hotel for its convenient location, value for money and proximity to an event we were attending. The staff were friendly and helpful, though a little Fawlty Towers. The rooms are on the small side but recently renovated with modest sized bathrooms. Our friends had an upstairs room with a lovely patio area. Some cleanliness issues - hair on bathroom floor. Included breakfast was good, and barista coffee at extra cost was excellent. Would stay here again.

We have stayed at the Hughenden for many years. During this time the business has been sold twice to a new owner. We stayed at the Hughenden for the following reasons.
1 The property and atmosphere is delightful
2 The staff get to know you and are very helpful.
3 The room rates are very reasonable and include a breakfast.
4 The restaurant is lovely and the food very good.
5 The hotel is well looked after and very clean.
6 The hotel is in an area close to shopping and cafes.

Today.
1 The property is still interesting but has lost its charm.
2 Despite having stayed at this hotel on numerous occasions over many years, we were not in the computer.
3 The room rates have gone up, but include a voucher for breakfast in the coffee terrace. No opportunity to order a cooked breakfast or self serve from a buffet.
4 The restaurant does not provide lunch and only has dinner on weekend nights.
5 The hotel whilst clean is looking neglected and carpets warn and grubby. Dust under the furniture in the foyer.

The hotel is no longer offering the convenience we were loving.
THE REASONS. for everything? The hotel has been sold and divided its facilities between accomodation and dining, run now by separated entities.
Plus I handed back the breakfast vouchers value 2x$10 and they still charged me 7.50 for mini bar purchases.
I think we will find something else.

I stayed in this cute boutique hotel a few times. Room was nice with a cute balcony, bed very comfy, air con & ceiling fans worked well. Staff were extremely helpful! I am only give it a 3 dots (average) because the free breakfast was so poor & if you want to have a real breakfast you need to pay for it on top of the expensive rate they charge for the room. They used to serve lunch in the past but that stopped happening. In the evening we ordered "antipasto" which it included prosciuto as per the menu but when they brought it to the room they said that they have no prosciuto anymore & added some extra cheese, for a 4 stars hotel this is not right! It is the only decent hotel within the area so I might need to come back as my mother lives close by & that is the reason I stay there sometimes.

I stayed at the Hughenden with my dog whilst travelling for work. The hotel is lovely and unique and for the most part I really enjoyed my stay. The hotel is pet friendly, in so far that they allow your pet to stay, but they don't really provide any other pet friendly facilities beyond that. For example, there is no grassy area on the hotel premise and you need to take your dog over to Centennial park to relieve themselves. As a solo female traveller, the idea of doing this at night made me pretty uncomfortable. Secondly, when booking you have to book a 'pet-friendly' room, which costs more than a standard room. I thought that this might mean that they provide a kennel, or dog bowl, or just a little more space for your furry friend, but this is not the case. I think if you are paying more than there should be something to show for it. If travelling without a pet it is great, if you have a pet this is just something to be aware of. Overall, a great stay.

As a place to sleep for a short visit I really liked this hotel. In a what looked like a converted old mansion I liked the many corridors and cosy feel. The common lounge was especially cool with its fireplace. I did not have a dog myself but I enjoyed the presence of others in this pet friendly place. The staff were all very easy going and responsive to emails and were well organised. There is a cafe on site. Also lots of nice places to eat and shop very close by. On site parking was a big plus and not expensive.
Heating in the room was my only quibble because using small plug in heaters did not really do the job.

I stayed one night at the Hughenden after attending a wedding in Centennial Park, a short walk from the hotel. I booked the day before and received a great rate and secure parking. Having grown up in this area of Sydney, I'd been past the hotel many times, but never stayed until this week. It is an old hotel but the room (Standard Plus) was a good size, nicely decorated and perfect for a night of rest before an early start the next day. The king size bed was comfortable and although I had the first room on the ground floor, I couldn't hear any noise from the road. The bar at the front of the hotel was a nice place to enjoy a sparkling wine before walking to the wedding and the breakfast voucher for the coffee shop open at 7am was perfect for me. I'm glad I finally stayed here and would do so again; the staff were friendly and helpful and the hotel offered a unique experience when compared with the larger hotels in the city.

Wonderful to have somewhere to stay with your dog. Staff kindly upgraded us to a larger room when it became available. Was wonderful to have a "sun room". I appreciated breakfast vouchers but thought it a bit stingy that we had to find 40 cents each morning to add a milk alternative (eg soy). Surely this small cost could be accommodated. The proximity of Centennial Park was fantastic for exercising.

We just had a wonderful stay at the Hughenden Hotel. Staff were exceptional. The room was quaint and well set up for our needs.
The Hotel is close to Centennial Park and the local village has lots of Cafes, Restaurants, Shops, Hotels and Galleries.
We will be back.

Thankyou for looking after us. Clean, friendly and in a great location for us. The breakfasts were nice and the staff very helpful in accommodating our large car in the tight parking spaces. Nothing was too much trouble, including extra towels.
