I’ll start with the good points, although there really aren’t that many! The staff are lovely, the spa seems to have been renovated and could be lovely and the evening meal and breakfast were delicious (although we did have issues with some of the meals due to dietary requirements) and the grounds are stunning, but (and this is a big but!) that’s about it! We booked a spa weekend here nearly 2 years ago which we’ve had to move a number of times due to covid. Yesterday morning we arrived at the spa to be told that there was nobody available to do our treatments and the manager had been trying to get in touch with our party for a number of weeks to inform us, we could sympathise with this if it wasn’t for the fact that the member of our party who had arranged the stay has emailed a number of times to confirm the arrangements and had also spoken to someone on the spa last Thursday to confirm! We were also told that we didn’t have the hot tubs booked as we’d planned (again this had been confirmed on the Thursday) also that we owed £400! Everything has been paid for almost 2 years ago! We were obviously disappointed but as we’d traveled over 40 minutes we decided to stay. At this point we had only been able to speak to the manager over the phone as no manager was on duty, leaving the young spa staff to deal with the situation, something that we felt was incredibly unfair. Once a manager was available to speak to us we were offered a mud treatment (we didn’t take the spa up on this due to the concern that this would stain some of our swim suits) and a bottle of Prosecco. After some further discussions we were then offered afternoon tea as compensation. We arrived on time for our booking but then had to wait for an hour to receive our afternoon tea. At one point 2 platters were delivered to our table for us to be told about 5 minutes later that they weren’t ours and had them taken off us and delivered to another table! Once ours finally arrived I was deliver a platter that I couldn’t eat (I’m lactose and gluten intolerant) because they’d put cheese on the sandwiches. When the waiter offered to exchange them I asked if I could have smoked salmon as the rest of my party had, they then delivered me a smoked salmon sandwich with the skin still on! By this point I was so hungry I skinned it myself! I was brought another sandwich about 10 minutes later but it wasn’t on gluten free bread so I was unable to eat it. For the evening meal the waitress went to the kitchen to confirm what the alternatives would be for some of the dishes for me only for me to be told once I placed the order that they didn’t actually have the alternatives available! The overnight stay wasn’t any better. The hotel is dilapidated and in desperate need of renovations, which there were signs up to state that they would be taking place imminently, however there were some things that were just dirty such as grubby mattresses that were falling apart left in the hallway, what looked like mould on the walls and a rotten door to the wet room in our bedroom, another concerning thing in the wet room was the electric towel rail located directly opposite the shower. The beds were clean but incredibly uncomfortable, I could feel the springs through the thin sheet on the mattress. There are a multitude of other things that I could highlight but I could be here all night! In fairness the staff did try their best to improve our stay, but most of them were incredibly young and inexperienced (not their fault at all and everyone has to learn but should have the opportunity to do so properly supervised and supported) Unfortunately the hotel and spa is incredibly poorly managed, and it really seemed that they were trying to do too much instead of focusing on getting the basics right. It’s really a shame because it could be amazing, it just completely misses the mark in almost every way.

Well what can I say we booked this hotel with spa breaks 2 years ago due to covid it was postponed so needless to say we were looking forward to it when it came round ,I had called the venue on the Thursday to check that we will still OK to come and that the treatments were still on the young girl on the phone said yes and to stick to the schedule of 11am for hot tubs and treatments for 1pm 2pm and 3pm as there were 6 in our party. We arrived at 10.30 and went straight to the Spa were we were greeted by 2 young girls who asked us to take a seat as her manager needed to speak to us , she then came back to say that her manager said our treatments had been cancelled and said did I want to phone her as she wasn't due in until later on ,so I did she advised that they had tried to get hold of me but had no record of my contact details this I find unbelievable as I had emailed the Spa to book the treatments and hot tubs over 12 months ago this was blamed on the last spa manger who had not updated my details. We were offered a bottle of prosseco as an apology which we accepted as the 2 young girls were not blame for this farce , We were also offered a afternoon tea for lunch which we had to wait one and a half hours for but this was a lot less then some people had to wait, As this was a spa break we had an overnight stay as well the rooms were fine and clean , Our evening meal was also included which for me and 3 of the group was fine but for one of our party who is a vegan the choice was risotto and for my other friend who is gluten and lactose intolerant she was offered something and was then told they didn't have any. Surely as its 2021 restaurants should be aware that there a lot of vegan and food intolerant people and perhaps should have a bit more choice on the menu . Needless to say I don't think we will visit Ruthin Castle again which is a shame . Perhaps the owners of this hotel and spa need to spend a few days at the venue and listen to the guests and staff because I'm sure they are fed up with the constant complaining from guests because whilst we were there there was quite a few people complaining.

We booked a one night spa escape which on the face of it seemed a very good deal as dinner, breakfast and a treatment in the Spa were included. Firstly I received a phone call at 9pm the night before our arrival informing me the Spa treatments had been cancelled due to staff shortages! Ok we were disappointed but it is what it is and were offered some refund (I did however note afterwards this had also happened to other guests during October) The castle is in dire need of repair, plaster coming off walls and painted to look like a “feature”, the reception area was clogged with boxes and no where near as grand as it could (and probably was) years gone by and the room had lots of original features put let down by bits if furniture that looked like they’d been picked up from the local tip! The food was ok but nothing on the menu was as it was advertised. A ham hock terrine is NOT two lumps of ham dumped on a plate with “jus” It’s hard to find any positives but the staff were very friendly and welcoming which is a credit to them given the environment they are working in!

Ruthin Castle… Newly married, high on life and full of positivity. I booked a two night weekend stay at Ruthin Castle for our honeymoon. Unfortunately our bubble was quickly burst by the damp and dirty condition of this tired and neglected hotel. The hotel appears at first glance to be as advertised but upon arrival we were rudely awakened by the reality that this once magnificent castle was unable to defend its self against years of neglect and a team of colour blind decorators. The hotel stinks of damp and mould. Threadbare carpets and blown plaster walls lead to tired rooms that hold a fusty, damp and dirty odour. Such a shame that the only warm and welcoming glow within the walls of this dead castle is dull glow of the electric fires now occupying the hearths of the retired fireplaces.
