Travellers' Choice
Set in the picturesque village of Rhu overlooking the Firth of Clyde, near Loch Lomond the four star Rosslea Hall Hotel offers you a choice of traditional elegance and modern facilities. Our award winning Restaurant and wedding venue are famed for the quality of food and service. Built in 1849 by Architect Daniel Walkinshaw, who was so enamoured by Italy in general, decided his house should be italian in style and built on the shores that most resembled his loved Bay of Naples. To this day, with its bell tower clearly visible from the peninsula in Rhu Rosslea still has the Italianate flavour.

We booked a Superior Seaview Room which during the booking process looked very fancy, large room, stylish, just the place to take the wife for a relaxing night away after some tough times. Unfortunately the room we were given was tiny and was obviously nothing like the advertised rooms, so buyer beware, perhaps phone them rather than book online and ensure you are getting the room they show you. The room did have a king size bed and a sea view, so "technically" fulfilled the brief, but £170 for a room that is beaten on all fronts apart from the view by a £35 Premier inn room is a bit hard to swallow. Maybe £100 for that room would have been fairer, but Hotels have struggled during covid so no serious complaints there. However there was a wedding on, and they had obviously been given all of the good rooms. We were stuck right above the smoking area for the wedding party. So although there was a view there was nowhere to sit and enjoy it, and if you did stand at the window you had to enjoy the wafting smoke and the stares of the other guests. Added to that the room was roasting, even with no heating on, and after opening the window for some air (smoke) we later found when we tried to get to sleep that the window refused to close. So smoke and noisy party goers meant very little sleep. (absolutely no issues with the wedding party, not their fault and they all seemed to enjoy the day). Absolutely no wifi in the room, although that wasn't a major issue. My main issue was the food, and I will say that the lovely GM did say that they had issues with suppliers etc but the restaurant was closed because of the wedding, meaning we had to eat in the bar. The menu was Steak, Burger, fish and chips or Risotto, hardly fine dining. I had been looking forward to some fantastic seafood given previous reviews but all I got was a gristly 5oz steak that was so thin it was physically impossible for the chef (cook?) to cook it m/rare the way I asked, so medium well it was. So overall a very disappointing night away but hey ho these things happen. There are more important things to worry about in life. On a positive note, It was clean, the staff were all lovely, the breakfast was superb and the location of the hotel is very nice. I would love to try this hotel again when they are fully open and there is no wedding on. My advice to the hotel though is: Don't put pictures of swanky rooms on when you are booking then switch for a very basic small room Advise at time of booking that there is a wedding on and let me decide if I still want to choose your hotel for a quiet night away. Advise at the time of booking that the usual restaurant fine dining menu is off and its limited bar food only, and I can then select another hotel. If you advertise wifi, install some additional access points to ensure all rooms have access.

Lovely old building but it is a bit sad and neglected and combined with the covid limitations it made it feel a bit old and tired. Very quiet with not many people around so not much "vibe". The other problem (noth their fault) was the Church bell chiming every 15 minutes throughout the whole night! Nice sound but, well, you know...

One night stay away with friend and it was really lovely though drove right by it as sign post reads Victoria XU then in small letter under that Rosslea. Asked about the name, seemingly owned by Chinese man who lives in London with his wife Victoria and his name is XU pronounced Chu. Staff very welcoming. Paid for an upgrade seaview room, lovely. Food was really good, Thai fish cakes the best. Breakfast good. But really happy with the honesty of staff as I left my IPad behind and they called me straight away before we had left Helensburgh to let me know. Thank you very much indeed for this, as my husband would have killed me if I'd come home without it!!! Near the town of Helensburgh which is worth the walk around.

I could not have dreamed of a better wedding venue for my daughter’s wedding. The Hotel’s location is excellent, right on the riverside, plenty of parking and beautiful gardens for photographs. The Hotel itself is just beautiful with many original features . Everything you could need is in the rooms which were spotlessly clean and if you do need something the staff will sort it. The wedding planner, Mark , is an absolute diamond , totally unflappable which kept all of us calm. His attention to detail made the day go like a dream. Our meals were absolutely delicious and the waiting staff couldn’t do enough to help us. We were in the conservatory which was beautifully decorated with white drapes and little white lights. The doors led out to a nice seated area looking over the garden. While the venue, the accommodation and the meals were good it was the fantastic staff that made the day perfect and memorable.

We got married at the Rosslea Hall Hotel in Novemver 2020 after having to cancel our original venue. Despite all the restrictions and difficulties of the pandemic, Lynn and the team could not have been more helpful. I am so glad we cancelled our original venue as I don’t think anywhere else would have been able to come close to making our day as perfect as it was! Thank you all x
