I recently visited Mull for the first time for my birthday weekend. We stayed at the recently renovated Isle of Mull Hotel and Spa. I had an amazing few days exploring the beautiful isles and wildlife. The hotel has some good points and some areas for improvement. I have previously worked in a hotel so I understand the challenges they face and I will be honest but fair with this review. In my opinion the hotel opened too soon after Covid. I imagine this is because, like many businesses, they need the income. However there is still a lot to be finished here. I was told they had spent £3.4 million renovating the place. The entrance is very tasteful. The inside decor is also very well done - contemporary but stylish and comfortable. But if you look at the rest of the outside of the building it really is a monstrosity of architecture from decades ago. Perhaps their money would have been better spent starting from scratch! Although I presume that would not be cost efficient. There is also signage to be erected. And I presume a roof over the front gazebo like area. The landscaping in the back is not complete. There are building materials around the sides and back of the building. And unfortunately the spa was not yet ready even though they took our spa treatment reservations in advance which was extremely disappointing. Another concern I have is about accessibility. The front entrance does not have a ramp or an automatic door opener. There is no lift. It is their legal responsibility to ensure all aspects of their services are accessible to customers with mobility or health issues. At this time I would not recommend this hotel to anyone in a wheelchair unfortunately. The staff were very friendly and went out of their way to help us. I cannot fault that. But you definitely got the feeling that they were short staffed and that there needed to be training for some of them. I was also concerned that at times, particularly in the restaurant, staff kept lowering their masks to speak to customers. That defeats the purpose of wearing the mask and goes against government guidelines for wearing masks. This made me uncomfortable. Otherwise the Covid restrictions were well implemented. Signs, hand sanitiser, masks in common areas. At check in I was extremely surprised to receive an actual key. This is very old fashioned in 2021. I expected a swipe card to insert into a card reader on the door but they don’t have this. They also only had one key so could not provide a second one even though there were two of us. I find this very odd in this day and time. Keys are so easily lost and customers often want everyone in the room to have their own key so they can all come and go as they please. Also I would think not using keys may be more sanitary during Covid times. Also at check in I tried to use a credit card to pay and their systems had a problem with it. They confirmed it was their system and not my card. By the time we checked out three days later this had still not been rectified. The bedroom was again very tastefully decorated. I said I would love to have the side tables, lamp, headboard, bathroom design in my own home. The room was advertised as sea view, which it technically had, but it was mostly a forest view. Unfortunately the room did not have amenities which I would expect in a hotel these days - fridge, safe, robe, slippers, temperature control. So on the humid days the room was quite uncomfortable. The only temperature control was opening the window which at night just lets the midges in! The room was quite tight for two adults. No king rooms were available. We had several meals in the restaurant. I was told they just got a rosette. It is a nice but limited menu. Delicious local scallops and oysters. My friend had a burger which looked delicious. I had a fillet steak which was very tender and had delicious flavours. The sides of samphire, broccoli, vine tomatoes, mushrooms were all very good. At breakfast you could have fruit, yogurt, granola, full cooked breakfast. Sadly no fresh juice, just concentrate. My one issue with the restaurant was that at every single meal they were always out of something. So for just re-opening and having a limited menu I found this odd. I think there are some issues in the kitchen with ordering or suppliers. It is the decision of the owner that this is a pet friendly hotel. I love all animals, but not everyone likes a dog in their bedroom or dining room etc. Dog hair, barking, poo stains, smell is not for everyone. If you are going to maintain this policy perhaps there could be certain sections for people with pets separately to the other clientele. And I truly feel for the staff who have to clean up messes as almost all areas are carpeted. I can imagine this new carpet will have to be steam cleaned and replaced often with dogs visiting. Mull is absolutely lovely. I would perhaps stay here again once they have worked out all the kinks!

Thank you for your comprehensive review, Alba. You are correct in pointing out that this is an incredibly difficult time for hospitality. Regulations, stock shortages, and limited teams mean we are all having to work really hard at ensuring guests are looked after. This is not to excuse any of the shortcomings you experienced during your stay, all of which will be addressed in earnest and corrected. I am able to confirm that the hotel's external renovations are nearing completion, all rubble and debris is being moved and replaced with new garden landscaping. Including a raised wooden walkway down to the beach. I would like to correct you if I may on the point regarding accessibility, our front entrance to the hotel has a ramp with no stairs from here to 13 ground floor rooms as well as the Oran na Mara restaurant. I would therefore argue that all aspects of our services are accessible to any of our guests with mobility or health issues. I am delighted to hear that you enjoyed your room. Each room has a radiator that may be adjusted to suit your needs, apologies if this was not pointed out to you during your stay. We are proudly dog friendly, we clean all areas of the hotel regularly to ensure no hairs or anything else is left behind. Thank you again for your feedback. Sincerely John

Glorious location, courteous staff and a great night’s sleep From arrival to departure, we had every need catered for. We were shown to our room, which has beautiful decor (we’ve even taken some inspiration from it for our bedroom at home) and a fantastic sea view! The first thing that struck us was how great the location was - literally minutes from the ferry, which was great considering we’d driven from the South that morning - with a sea view, lovely gardens and a very short walk to a lovely beach! During the evening we enjoyed drinks in the bar, on the veranda and then a lovely dinner in the restaurant. Everything was so peaceful yet there was a pleasantly lively and cheerful atmosphere. The view from the restaurant window during sunset was just perfect. As vegans it can be hard finding good food alternatives at hotels, but there were plenty of options when we requested to know if any of the meals on the main menu could be made vegan. The same was the case for breakfast. We had a great night’s sleep on a very comfortable bed and found our room to be very quiet despite it being a relatively busy evening. We were happy to find out the hotel was dog friendly and we didn’t find this to be a hindrance to our stay either! The only feedback we gave in the morning was that it would be nice to have vegan biscuits in the room, rather than or in addition to those already available (we were jealous we couldn’t tuck into a Tunnocks) and our feedback was taken very well with the very welcoming manager saying it was a good suggestion and one that would be looked into. All in all, we would definitely stay again and are very grateful for the service we received during our wonderful stay!

What a wonderful review, Thank you Dominic! I am so happy that you found our Hotel to be the perfect place to relax. Catering for all dietary requirements including veganism is something we are working hard at perfecting. Thank you for the note about the Tunnocks and sorry that you were not able to enjoy these. I will certainly look at adding a vegan treat to the rooms. Best wishes John

On arrival the staff were excellent and our upgraded sea view room was beautiful! Recently refurbished to high standards. We were visiting for a birthday and the hotel did everything to add to this! Organised alcohol gift package to be in room for arrival and the restaurant staff at night surprised us with a happy birthday dessert with candle! Staff were brilliant!! Clean, cosy, affordable, good location, what more could you want!? Swimming pool and spa was also very clean and not too busy, staff here also helpful. The food for dinner and breakfast was super tasty and my only criticism is how can you serve a Scottish breakfast without beans 😂 heard a couple people ask for them with their breakfast too 😂 get it on the menu! People like normal! But that's as minor as it gets, everything was to the highest standard. Will be back!

Staff were not attentive at all when serving us, we had to constantly remind them for our drinks when waiting 20-30 minutes for them. At the end we decided to just leave with our order not being served. I felt not appreciated & blocked out from the atmosphere of the service. We were just kind of forgotten about & felt awkward! Not a pleasant experience won’t be coming back.

Dear renatem828 My sincere apologies for the lack of service received on your recent visit. This is not the standard of service we aspire to offer. Our team regularly receives great service feedback but on this occasion, it seems we dropped the ball. I will be sure to discuss this with my team to ensure it does not happen again. Sincerely John
