Detailed Reviews
Baltasound is not a chain hotel and it’s the furthest north you can stay in the UK. It’s remote and we just went with the flow.
Steve’s welcome is friendly and fun. The cabin was spotless and comfortable. The food cooked by chef Nick was great. Go for the fish and seafood; it’s local and very fresh.
Like all hotels and restaurants, they’re struggling to get seasonal staff Steve is both front of house and cleaner. Mealtimes are fixed, but this really wasn’t a problem for us. This is the kind of place where you end up chatting with fellow guests and Steve about where you have been, what you have seen, life, the universe and everything.
The wifi didn’t work when we were there, but we had mobile signal so it wasn’t a problem when we were there for only two nights.
It’s worth wandering down to the seafront after dinner to look for birds and maybe spot an otter.
We nipped down to the Baltasound shop next to Britain’s most northerly post office to get a packed lunch each morning before going out for the day.

I stayed here for a night and it was both quirky and great fun. It's the most northerly hotel in the UK, in a remote location - the restaurant is for residents only (substantial and yummy food) and meals are at fixed times. Accommodation was a pine chalet - spotless, warm and very comfortable, with loud birdsong offering an early alarm call! Steve (proprietor) and Nick (chef) clearly work hard to run the establishment, which is anything but mainstream. Great e-mail communications when booking and prior to arrival. They also offer tips on where to go to spot wildlife. If you want a chain hotel this place is not for you, but if you are happy to live in the moment and try something totally different, give the Baltasound a try!

I stayed here in the absence of any other accommodation in the area. I had read reviews about the hotel so I was wondering what it would be like. I was given an outside cabin which was very nice in the unusually hot weather, it was spotlessly clean and very quiet.
I only ate in the restaurant on one night because it was so expensive, I was not the only guest remarking that £33 for 2 courses was a little over the top. The breakfast was fine with all the usual things on offer.
The lady who served at the tables worked very hard and obviously took pride in her work.

I try to be positive about a hotel an the amenities but, I found this to a faulty tower type hotel. There was no reception to greet just a note to say what chalet I was so staying at. These chalets where probably built in the seventies, and gave not moved on since. Because the walls and ceiling at tongue and groove all the light is absorbed.
The lighting is so poor that you have look at it to make sure it's on. The shower is a corner unit, that was put in when the building was built look at the photos. There is what was once a lawn, now it's a total mess with weeds growing everywhere. The food is a joke, friends had porridge one morning what was so thick you could of plastered the walls with it. Nothing managed to reach the table hot, warm was the best you could discribe it. The management have the upper hand on the fact that this is they only hotel on Unst, so you have to stay or travel every day from yell.

I would say this is quirky, not in a complimentary sense. Please read the other June review which is accurate. Cabins and fair proportions of the hotel probably 50+ years old T&G varnished with considerable non matching patching up. Light fittings in ours and dining area were odd. Dining room floor not swept from breakfast spills and still remained the following morning. Menu was amazing, given verbally 3 options, ‘all inclusive fixed price’ veggie not offered but supplied. No starter just main and dessert, fixed price reminded me of Butlins when I was a kid last century, what time is breakfast? 8 o’clock (full stop). We joked about breakfast cereals selection being just corn flakes, there was no cereal selection! basically just a fry up. Not even offered porridge. Not offered juice although spotted on exit. Toast was one slice. On a positive note room was clean.

We're sorry you didn't appear to enjoy your stay. The staff are all working hard in these difficult times, and we are lucky enough to have an excellent chef. We're not sure what you mean by ' veggie not offered but supplied'. Overall the guests are enjoying themselves - they love the location and being in the outside cabins. We decided do introduce some wilding in the grounds this year which we believe to an environmentally sound idea. We're pleased you managed to spot the orange juice - and mention the room was clean, and hope you at least managed to enjoy the superb location.

Stayed here as part of a wildlife tour group last month. Had we been on our own and had not advance paid for everything we would have left. The rooms were made for midgets, the bathrooms for contortionists and there was no wifi which I’m told by the lovely people at the nearby shop who let me access theirs has been non existent for years. The food was bland, overpriced and shop bought. The owner was rude to several members of our group when asked for basic items like additional towels and toilet paper. I was looking forward to staying at the most northerly hotel in the UK as part of the tour and had been forewarned by another group who we met that had checked out a day or so previously. I will never set foot in this establishment again and the owner even had the cheek to complain that we did not leave a gratuity.

We're sorry you didn't enjoy your stay Smokey - overall our guests like the food, we have a talented chef and our guests love being in the cabins - the location is certainly at least 4 star - if you were on a tour we're baffled as to how you can say the food was overpriced as your tour operator pays for it . For the record, and I think you have to be careful here Smokey our food is freshly cooked. Regarding towels and toilet paper we have no problem in supplying them. There is wifi in the bar/restaurant. The cabins were constructed by the oil industry when Baltasound was a hub using Baltasound Airport - they are of high quality build, winter insulated and comfortable - around 19 sq M . You are correct on one thing - you won't be setting foot in here again.

Start with the positives...
The room was clean.
The couple looking after the bar and restaurant worked very hard.
The food was very good.
A very good situation for exploring the island.
Now the not so positives
It is the only hotel on the island and for the accommodation offered we thought it was very expensive and we were asked to pay for our rooms at the start of our stay not on checkout as happened in the other hotels on our tour.
Although the food offer was very good it was very rushed. We are a couple who enjoy a leisurely meal and our meal was usually over in 45 minutes and as the bar was not open after 8pm we had to leave the restaurant rather than sit and enjoy a chat.
The garden around the rooms was very unkempt and untidy with weeds growing all around the pathways.
Overall we felt that we would have preferred to have visited the island for a day by using the excellent ferry service and spent our money elsewhere.
Maybe not everyone's opinion but other people who were staying were of the same thoughts.

The owner is rude, unwelcoming, arrogant and loses his temper. Accommodation is in small Butlins style chalets and expensive for their size, but there is little competition on Unst. However, food is OK but no wifi. Suggest you go to a B&B instead! What a pity, it ought to be a pleasure to stay there!

This appears to be a copy of the previous post as highlighted by the staff team: 1) We have decent Wifi it's not the latest 5 but Unst is upgrading from 2.5 this can create issues with the latest mobile devices 2) You've never had a write such a review as it's your first one with a new account! 3) Have you stayed in a bed and breakfast as well as our hotel? 4) For the vast majority of our guests it is a welcome place to stay and you can see this. 5) You state food is o.k (no examples) then swiftly on to' but no WiFi' The system was checked by a computer programmer after the last review - it is working but at 2.5 MG. It would be useful if you could contact me on 01957 711334 to discuss your review.

We stayed at the Baltasound Hotel for 2 nights.
Perfectly located in Baltasound within a short walk of a small shop and pub.
The local bus stops at the end of the driveway.
We stayed in cabin 23 which we found to be clean and comfortable.
We ate in the hotel on the first night. The food was tasty, the hotel were offering two courses plus a drink.
Breakfast in the mornings consisted of juice, cereals, toast and hot food to order. We enjoyed breakfast both mornings.
The staff work very hard.
The hotel is very peaceful and the staff friendly.
WiFi available but a bit patchy in the main building only. OK for looking up bus and ferry times and checking emails.
Make sure to visit Hermaness and Bobby’s bus shelter whilst staying.
Many thanks for a lovely couple of nights.

Spent 5 nights in June in outside cabin. Ok it is hotel prices but the cabin was actually quite pleasant, comfortable and clean (cabin 12) which I preferred to staying inside a hotel . The staff cooking and serving breakfast and evening meals worked hard to ensure we had a pleasant experience . Evening meals nice if not a little pricey for what you get although little choice to eat anywhere else . Meal did include 1 drink a positive . This could be a gem of a place with a little more TLC and investment. Great location and friendly staff .
