Beautiful house and setting with a very comfy bed in a well appointed room with wonderful views. But: 1. Bathroom on floor above with no lock on the door. Water tepid & a shower not possible because shower provided was for washing your hair only perhaps. No shower curtain
2. Food. Dinner charged at £25 a head comprised a sausage (not luxury ones!) casserole with cous cous and an average cheesecake from a packet An average bottle of white wine pre ordered was provided at a charge of £40 so the beautifully handwritten message in our room about the cost of a bottle of wine as £20 incorrect. Breakfast poor. Sausages (same brand as for dinner?) greasy & unappealing
A host with a captive audience given the very limited accommodation and eating options on the island. Advertising this as providing delicious, luxury food is misleading at best.

My three childhood friends and I spent three delightful nights at the historic Belmont House hostelry on the Isle of Unst in the very north of Scotland. Our host, Martin, was the epitome of gracious, friendly welcome. The accommodations were beautifully appointed and comfortable. Belmont House itself is an 18th century historic registry property that Martin has renovated into a wonderful B&B, clearly taking great care to decorate thoughtfully and tastefully, with an wise eye to his guests ease and needs. There are no real restaurants on Unst, an island with a permanent population of only 600 who are mostly shepherds and artisans, so for an additional fee he provided a delicious dinner each night in his elegant dining room. We could not have been happier with our accommodations (fair notice: the guest rooms do not have en suite baths, these must be accessed separately but are well designed and have comfortable amenities), our meals, as well as the special insider guidance we received from our host to help make the most of our sight-seeing while visiting the island. Three cheers for Martin and Belmont House!

There are not a lot of places on Unst where a visitor can stay, let alone eat. Since the hotel had bad reviews, we booked the Belmont House. It had good reviews on other websites concerning the house itself, the host and the food. We booked dinner as well, since there are no restaurants on Unst that are open for dinner. This was a big mistake. First of all, the house itself is nice, but not as impressive as on the photos, because the description failed to meet expectations. The kitchen which the owner uses as well as the guests, is quite small, and does not look like on the photos on the website, it is crammed and full, with even (freshly washed?) towels lying about. The guests need the kitchen, however, because there are no tea making facilities in the rooms, not even a sink. The bathrooms are not on the same floor, but either upstairs or downstairs, which was a surprise because it is NOT mentioned in the description. The website also mentions streaming tv, but I didn't even see a regular tv with regular channels in the house, neither in the rooms, nor in the sitting room. The rooms were very cold and we did not, as stated, have a small and a big towel per person.
The main disappointment, however, was the food. Breakfast was supposed to be included and dinners were charged extra and very expensive. I have not been so hungry after a dinner in my entire life, and I have never spent so much on dinner in my entire life either, and I have eaten in really posh places! I cannot understand the other reviews that point out the great food; either the time of good dinners and breakfasts is over now or those people were not hungry, or too shy to criticise. On the contrary, we had the impression that the owner did not even make an effort even though we had booked in advance and didn't just show up and expect food, so there was plenty of time to think what to cook and to go and buy food accordingly. The owner also offers expensive tours of the island, wine tasting etc., which we didn't book, so can't comment on that. I just wish we hadn't booked dinner, because without any food we couldn't have possibly been more hungry, but would've saved a lot of money. Breakfast was not better either, by the way. We would definitely not stay there again, nor would we recommend it to friends.
