I love Dartmoor but this was a way to enjoy it with luxury. Stunning country house, relaxed, welcoming and homely. Loads to do for the family and then there’s the whole of Dartmoor to explore outside. Thank you to the whole team dont know all your names but thank you Jack, chloe, especially Jason who let us meet the ferrets and chickens, Hannah on the archery was great...but most of all the tall chirpy Barman, nothing was too much trouble and he had a laugh with our shy 10 year old. Can’t wait to come and join you again soon

We had a wonderful three night stay at Bovey Castle this week. Despite Covid we were made to feel part of the family and everyone from the staff in the brasserie, to Reception, to Jason in the bar had a smile and were endlessly helpful. A couple of stand out things to mention, but really we loved every moment: - Electric charging for the car - very helpful as the hotel is rural - Quiet bookable sessions at the pool, which is beautiful and just the right temperature - The falconry experience with Martin - he and his birds were incredible and we've talked about it non-stop since - Great breakfast with views - although on the pricier side of hotel breakfasts as things go, we were never disappointed by any of our choices. - Stunning walks on your doorstep and the hotel have a great list of eateries nearby that didn't disappoint - Great golf course which is kept immaculate despite heavy rain at the moment - It is spotlessly clean and the Covid regs are really good too - lots of sanitizer around. We loved it and can't wait to return. Thank you to all the staff who no doubt have had a tricky year.

I was lucky enough to receive a gift voucher for Bovey Castle as a gift and what better way to spend it than enjoying a festive afternoon tea. Bovey Castle located within Dartmoor National Park is a stunning 5 Red Star, award winning country manor hotel, spa and golf resort, offering a first class luxury experience. We were greeted and welcomed by friendly doorman whom took our details and temperatures before we entered as part of their covid 19 precautions which was very reassuring. Once we were given the all clear we were shown to the Great Western Restaurant and told we were free to enjoy and explore the hotel. Full of country charm and character finished off with beautiful seasonal decorations, a stunning setting for a festive feast. Service was friendly and prompt. We were given the choice of tea's and coffee, and the option to add champagne, presecco or a glass of mulled wine to enhance your experience for a small charge. Afternoon tea was presented nicely, a delicious feast for the eyes and tasted even better than it looked. We opted for a glass of mulled wine to add an extra bit of festive cheer, which was full of seasonal flavours. The savoury tier offered the following finger sandwiches; Roast turkey and cranberry Mature cheddar cheese and onion Oak smoked salmon and lemon butter Honey roast ham and pickle Served with Chestnut and Clementine Sausage Roll and a Pear and Blue Cheese Quiche. Everything was super tasty and full of flavour. Our favourite being the chestnut and Clementine sausage roll. This was followed by the traditional Fruit and plain scones served with ample clotted cream and mulled wine jam. The jam was fruity with a hint of festive spice, delicious and novel although a little runny. This was accompanied by a slice of traditional stollen, a favourite of mine. The sweet tier offered Yule log with orange and vanilla butter cream Honey and cinnamon macaroon Cherry and pistachio choux Spiced apple mince pie Everything was delicious, nothing was too rich, we loved the honey a cinnamon macaroon with indulgent honey and cinnamon ganache. We really enjoyed our experience, and everything offered as part of our afternoon tea, stunning setting, great food and service. Would recommend and definitely come back for a special occasion. Perfect for a special treat.

My boyfriend and I stayed one night at Bovey with our dog. We’d paid extra to have a valley castle room which was £385 excluding breakfast. The photos of the room online showed enormous bright windows and a plush room, however we were unfortunately not given this. We were pushed away into a dark room in the eaves on the top floor with no working lift, we also had a dog so this was really inconvenient being so far from the entrance. The room had a tiny window and you couldn’t see much whilst laying in bed other than the sky. The room was very basic, no minibar or little extras which you’d usually expect with a room costing so much for one night. As soon as we went into the room I was dissatisfied so I contacted reception. They were unable to swap the room unless we paid another £200!? Which of course I was not happy to do. The setting is of course beautiful and the grounds are very well kept, the staff are all very pleasant and welcoming. Had we have been given the room that we’d paid for. We did the tasting menu that evening which was fantastic, if I could review the hotel and the dinner separately I would give that 5 stars. The food was incredible and our evening was made by Richard the somelier who had a vast knowledge of the wines and really interesting stories. It made the evening really enjoyable and would definitely recommend this plus the wine flight. Overall some good points but left with a sour taste in my mouth after paying £800 for one night stay with dinner in a dark dingy room which was worth no more than £200 at best.

As the headline says, staying isn't cheap compared to other places but it is worth it. The house and grounds are amazing. We stayed in a suite overlooking the first tee and enjoyed the views across the valley as much as of the golf course. We stayed on the first night that the hotel reopened after lockdown in July for a few days and had a great stay. Our first time on Dartmoor and our first staycation in many years. Special mention to John who runs the field activities. A lovely guy - we did both Archery and rifle shooting with him and he was excellent, especially so with our 7 year old. Also for Marcin the barman who was so welcoming, friendly and a great barman. As it was just after lockdown only the Brasserie was open and so we found the menu a little short for a stay of several nights. The service was a bit clunky at breakfast too but suspect that was post-lockdown adjustment. Thoroughly recommend the hotel.
