From the first phone call for reservations , to the leave taking, the service was flawless. A far superior experience to Charleston Place, where I spent last Thanksgiving. So personal, so attentive, the staff is outstanding. Every need was met immediately and with grace. Wonderful dog friendly accommodations. The bed and linens were some of the most comfortable ones ever...

Lovely setting in a great part of the historic district. Close to shops, dining and easy access to the 'hop on hop off' local trolleys. We stayed in the main house for 3 nights in room '8'. It was lovely: 4 poster bed with lovely linens, gas fireplace, period furnishings, beautiful views, and the convenience of a very modern bathroom,...

This was a chance for us to have a real taste of the history of Charleston. This Bed and Breakfast was the nicest one we have ever stayed at. The room was spacious, and almost felt more like a suite. There was a sitting area and a nice table for us to enjoy breakfast in our room. The temperpedic bed...

My husband and I chose the John Rutledge House Inn for our 20th anniversary trip to Charleston, and we couldn't have asked for a more perfect get-away! Over the years that we've visited Charleston, we've stayed in many of the best inns and bed-and-breakfasts, and we found the John Rutledge House Inn to be the best! From the minute we...

One of the best hotel experiences ever, 24 hour attendant is like having your own private butler. Huge rooms with separate sitting room, nice bathrooms, 2 TV's, 2 gas fireplaces. Impeccable service. Great breakfasts (different everyday with plenty of choices) tea served every afternoon. Walking distance to all the great things to see in Downtown Charleston. When we return we...

First time staying at this property and will certainly be back. First of all, the property is cool....you can feel the Charleston History of the house. Magnificent architecture, nicely appointed and the greatest Ballroom/parlor, where they serve complimentary tee and appetizers every day. Rooms are very comfortable with Tempurpedic mattresses and complimentary breakfast is served to your room when you...

A welcoming, quiet, comfortable room with a great breakfast. Outstanding for weeknight business trip. Convenient, but not in the middle of the noise of King, Meeting, or Bay Street. Now first on my list for Charleston travel.

My cousin from Brazil came to visit and I wanted to show her Charleston. We chose the John Rutledge House for its charm and location and we were not disappointed! The concierge Margot made our stay extra comfortable. The room, #2 , was beautiful and cozy. The afternoon tea/cocktail hour was very nice. We loved having breakfast delivered to the...

My wife and I honeymooned at the John Rutledge House Inn 20 years ago and recently returned for our anniversary. Both of our stays were wonderful. The care and attention we received was above anything we expect at even nice B&B's. I think what impressed us the most, was that it wasn't just the person at the front desk who...

The warm, inviting welcome I received upon arriving at John Rutledge House Inn was like a "welcome home." This was repeated each and every time I left to photograph and explore, then return. Amazing staff, extremely accommodating, friendly and willing to ensure your stay is nothing but 5 stars. My room was beautiful and more than comfortable. Breakfast was delicious...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
America's Most Historic Inn. John Rutledge, one of the fifty-five signers of the U.S. Constitution, built his home in 1763. Now exquisitely restored, it is one of only fifteen homes belonging to those signers to survive - and the only one to now accommodate overnight hotel guests. History records that George Washington called here in 1791. An entry in his diary shows a breakfast with Mrs. Rutledge. A loving rejuvenation has restored the beautiful details of the home's 18th and 19th century architecture: the elaborately carved Italian marble fireplaces, the original plaster moldings, the inlaid floors and the graceful ironwork. The John Rutledge House Inn offers nineteen guest rooms within a complex of three buildings. One may choose between the elegance of rooms and spacious suites in the original grand residence or the charm and seclusion of rooms in the inn's two carriage houses. Antiques and historically accurate reproductions give each room its own warmth and distinction. John Rutledge House Inn is proud to be a founding hotel in Historic Hotels of America, as well as Select Registry - Distinguished Inns of America and Classic Inns of the South. Guests may leave cars parked on-site for their entire stay because the best of this beautiful port city is just beyond the doors of the John Rutledge House Inn. The city's finest restaurants, theaters, shops, and the Old City Market are all in short walking distance. The gorgeous residential area "South of Broad" begins directly opposite the Inn. A stay in this elegant antebellum bed and breakfast offers the opportunity to experience history as well as the warm hospitality for which the South is justly famous. ... more   less
