Hi,
I checked into the Yamba backpackers YHA for a few days. During that time I fell over and broke my leg foot and ankle, which needed pins and plates put into it along with a hospital stay. During that time the family that run the backpackers bent over backwards to assist me. Not only did Christie come to pick me up from the hospital but she also bought out Steve, so that my car could be driven home. During that time they put me in a private room with my own ensuite and put a chair in the shower to make life easier for me. I can’t tell you how wonderful this hostel is, the feeling of being cared for and The constant check in from Sadie and other members of the Yamba backpackers staff was absolutely incredible.
I would not only recommend this place, but I would suggest people go there so they have the feeling of Australian hospitality at its best.
The hostel is very close to the beach in the river it sits in the main street close to all the shops and it has a lovely restaurant downstairs, They’re not only has wonderful coffee and coming from Saint Kilda I can truly say it’s the best coffee I’ve had in my trip of seven weeks away. They also do surfing, and Steve does a wonderful trip around the area and shows all the hotspots of Yamba.
Thank you everyone at Yamba YHA, I can’t wait to come back and learn to surf and be surrounded by wonderful people again 🙏🙏🙏🏄‍♀️🏄‍♀️🏄‍♀️🌴🌴🌴

The Wobbly Chook is a bistro underneath the Yamba Backpackers and is worth a visit. It is a micro brewery about to open.
Owner And staff are very friendly. Lunch is pub style with some different items on the menu. Modern Industrial style with beautiful stainless steel brewing tanks around the walls. Great people watching vantage points with high tables and whole front open to the footpath.

Can't recommend the restaurant here more highly. My sister and I discovered The Wobbly Chook — the restaurant below the atm non-functioning backpackers, due to COVID — during our three day stay in Yamba. It is centred around beer tasting and the huge beer vats can be clearly seen lining both sides of the dining area. The fact you can see the shiny beer processing equipment only enhanced the experience! The atmosphere is casual, vibrant, cool, and inviting. The coffee was exceptional and the food was too. The staff are so nice and friendly. It's got great al fresco tables under huge black umbrellas as well as indoor tables. Go there!!!

Some of the fastest service I’ve ever experienced. The food was given to us in under 5 minutes plus it was delicious. The staff are extremely nice and friendly. I just had to buy some of their merchandise. I would highly recommend to stop here when in Yamba.

The staff are very friendly, relaxed and helpful. The beds are basic but clean which is nice to see. While staying we signed up for 'Shanes Tour'. It's a rollercoaster of emotions and I seriously recommend. That's all I'll say about the tour. Overall a pleasant stay, Yamba is a nice spot to chill before heading to Bryon.

My friend & I stayed at this hostel when we were making our way down to Sydney & needed a place to stay last minute. We called about two hours before arriving late in the evening after their reception had closed but they stayed open until we arrived. My friend needed to contact home because of an emergency & they gave her their wifi after hours as well. They were extremely accomodating with everything we needed. We stayed in an 8 bedroom dorm & it was one of the biggest hostel rooms I've ever been in! The beds were extremely comfortable, the showers were great & clean! They also had different things planned each day for everyone staying as well. We had to leave early the next morning but I would love to go back & explore Yamba while definitely staying at this hostel again!

Hostel was really good, great atmosphere, facilities, cheap tours and surfing lessons. First night we were there they had beer pong which was a great way to get to know people and had massive game of man hunt in local area which was great fun. Bathrooms were clean most of the time although should be checked in the evening not just in the morning. Kitchen was a good size and again fairly clean.

The negative in my opinion is as follows:
*We called and booked for three in a 4 bed mixed dorm, however when we got there we were split up into an 8 bed male and 8 bed female, even though on the phone the guy said we were lucky as we booked into the last mixed

* the rooms are unbearably hot to the point your drenched in sweat 2 minutes after laying down to sleep, there are two ceiling fans in the 8 bed dorms but to far away from the beds to give any relief and basically just circulate hot hair anyway

*major negative which made me give an average score was because of one staff member, the large older cleaning lady. She was very rude to me, moving my stuff without my permission, having a go at me for putting a drink of coke on the floor (nearly empty) as it could spill, however this was done because the wind was blowing it off the table causing it to spill. We had to move rooms halfway through our stay but weren't told what time to leave, only that our new room would be cleaned first so we could move straight in, so we went out to get a quick takeaway coffee whilst it was cleaned. The whole situation had changed by the time we got back, we now had to get out of our rooms straight away, put our luggage in storage and wait 3 hours until we could get in our new room, very inconvenient as we couldn't get ready to do anything. To make matters worse the girls in my rooms said the same cleaning lady had been very rude about me as I hadn't moved our stuff, even though my bags were packed and the only thing on my bed were a phone and an iPad. This woman needs to learn that even though this is a hostel we are paying guests and customer service costs nothing.

Its a shame for me to have to write so many negatives about this but it really did make me feel uncomfortable and not as welcome as I should have been made to feel.

In conclusion very good hostel, just avoid that woman.

Yamba meant to be just a place to sleepover but we absolutely fell in love and stayed 2 nights! Such a positive vibes from all of the people! Every single face super smiled! Unfortunately we haven't been on Shane's tour but I heard from my friend that he's a legend :) The hostel itself is super clean and cozy! I wish to stay there much longer! If you after local, super friendly atmosphere and cheap surfing go Yamba! 💜

Such a backwards hostel.

Wifi only accessible between 8am-3pm
YES 3pm!!!?!?!!

Not only that it is INCREDIBLY slow! I knew Australia was back in the dark ages in regards to internet access although this is the slowest internet we experienced within 4 months in Australia. Bad enough it's slow but to physically switch it off? Bizarre?!?! When we asked why she offered to keep it on for an extra 15 min? Useless as we were hoping to use the Internet to plan the itinerary for the rest of our trip and book flights etc.

If you intend to FaceTime/Skype family in Europe/uk etc do not stay here it's impossible with the time difference and them switching off the wifi mid afternoon!?!

They insist" on you wearing this rubber band like a child - apparently to check you stay in the hotel? As the rooms are locked this is completely unnecessary. Felt like a child.

The communal areas are VERY tired and run down - there was zero atmosphere - we have stayed in ymc hostels across Oz and this one was very tired and run down compared to any hostel we have stayed in which is especially disappointing as its so expensive. Turn on a radio in the kitchen or something!!?!

The kitchen was extremely dated and unclean. The kitchen is filled with boxes and crates with food. The dishes are old and mismatched - the cups are placed upside down on a greasy dirty tea towel and left for the next person - meaning you will want to was AGAIN before using a cup.

There is the most irritating sound system where they announce activities for the day and make staff requests - this plays straight into your bedroom - so no hope of a long lie

The entrance is through a cafe which is nice enough. Meh is our overall feeling - you'd have to be here for the surf as there ain't much more to see or do.
