Stayed for 2 nights in Semillon room which is upstairs with the 2 other guest rooms. Room was a reasonable size, plenty of hot water, comfortable bed. Room had been recently renovated but done on the cheap. Ill fitting doors, draughty. Other 2 rooms occupied by family members. The first negative factor about our stay was the rooms were overpriced for what they were plus we had to pay full amount up front which is most unusual in Covid times. The second thing was the unfriendly attitude of the hostess which which ensured we cannot recommend Grays Inn. Panino restaurant attached to Grays Inn was sensational. Had breakfast twice at Myrtle and Stone across the road which was excellent both times. ,

My wife & I have just had a 1 night stay at Grays Inn which is a 19th century Georgian building in the centre of Wollombi Village. The accomodation rooms are upstairs on level 1 which share the balcony that overlooks Wollombi Village, downstairs on the ground level is a restaurant & wine tasting is available at their Cellar Door. At the rear of the Inn you can spend time in the garden. We found our room was very comfortable & the complimentary bottle of red wine waiting for us in the room was a bonus.

I was looking for a comfortable two night escape. I got horrendous mosquitos, even with every window shut and toxic bug spray . I didn’t get a wine tasting as advertised as the cellar door was shut both days I was there, I phoned before booking and this was not mentioned. I checked if the rather nice looking cafe over the road would be open, told it would be, no it wasn’t. No hot water after a truely uncomfortable night with a 6am wake up of a truck parked in the street running for an hour. I have read reviews saying how attentive the host are. Well if the lady we saw on our last morning was one of them her oh your going, shutting the door in our faces did not strike me as attentive. Sort out the missies, actually supply what us advertised and maybe check in on your guests and this might be worth a second try but not sure I would risk it. I did try to contact the establishment after my stay but no response.

Stayed at Grays Inn while in wollombi. Lovely cozy room with a great view from the veranda. Nice and clean & even has wine tasting down stairs. Stayed In the Semillon room that had the en-suite. Other rooms had shared bathroom. Highly recommend.

A beautiful old building with some modern conveniences, but a few minor issues. On the plus side there is the wine cellar with wine tasting thrown in, a magnificent garden at the rear including an outdoor chess set. We stayed in the Shiraz room, tiny and with no room to hang clothes, which was tricky because it rained a lot, bed was comfy but the mosquitoes were a problem, the bathroom is across the hall displaying a sign that says "for the use of Shiraz room guests only" - problem was one or more of the other guests obviously decided they needed to use the shower while we were out - leaving bathroom linen on the floor, weird! On the plus side one of the owners offered us three bottles of wine to take home to assuage us - gratefully accepted.

Response from Michael N, Owner at Grays Inn

Thanks for your comments and we appreciate the time guests take to provide us with constructive feedback. Our apologies for the unacceptable use of others of what should have been your exclusive bathroom. We have arranged to instal a lock on the bathroom door to ensure it can only be used by guests in our Shiraz room. Also, we have taken action to try and keep mosquitoes from the room. Nevertheless, it’s good that you were comfortable and enjoyed the extra wine.

Grays inn is 3 beautiful rooms above a wine cellar in a very old building. The floor slopes just enough to remind you of its age. Apparently it was convict built but there were no ghosts that we noticed! Our bathroom was across the landing but was exclusively ours. The other two rooms are bigger and en-suite. Meals can be taken at Panino which is downstairs to the left. Opposite is an interesting junk shop called the Forge. The resident dog likes long vintage dresses and stood under my petticoats, following me around the shop!

Response from Michael N, Owner at Grays Inn

Thank you for your very nice review. Grays Inn is certainly a lovely old Georgian style sandstone building but not actually built by convicts. Nevertheless, convicts did in fact build Wollombi Road at the front of the building and much of Tourist Drive 33 which is the beautiful scenic drive to Wollombi and the Hunter Valley.

Standing in my room at 9.40am (fortunately dressed). Door opens (no knock), manager has been on holidays and she's behind with the laundry & wants the sheets from the bed. I could go on, but that was the highlight. Shiraz room: air con very loud, bathroom lamp globe broken, so light was minimal. Wine (a Verdelho) was brilliant.

We stayed in the verdelho room which was a comfortable and quaint room. Clean with tv, full length mirror and bar fridge. There was limited hanging space, which was over the fridge, but this wasn't really an issue for us as we were just staying for two nights to attend a wedding. I would have rated the room 4/5 but there was no hot water for a shower either morning or night...made it a little chilly for winter...and a little inconvenient when getting ready for a wedding!

Room Tip: Verdelho is facing back of inn which means it is quieter - but not much of a view.

Had a wedding in Wollombi so needed accommodation just for the night. Stayed in the Shiraz room, room was clean but small, the room had a separate bathroom which was actually down the hill so don't forget your pjs. The host was friendly and warm, lovely bottle of complimentary wine. My only negatives would be room was full of mosquitoes which made sleeping a hassle and that there was no mirror in the room to get ready in front of. Good if you need a bed for the night.

Thankyou for your nice review. Whilst the Shiraz room is our smaller room with its exclusive bathroom a few metres away, it's a very cute and cozy place to stay with our guests loving its warmth and intimacy. Thanks also for reporting the mosquitoes and we will look into this immediately. We were not aware that these were a problem until your feedback.

We needed a place to stay in Wollombi while attending a wedding - somewhere handy, rather than a more expensive B&B option. The Inn is right in the centre of the village and is a lovely restored heritage building. Only small (3 rooms) but with excellent customer service. We stayed in the Verdellho Room, overlooking the lovely back gardens. The room was a good size though the hanging space was a little meagre for 2 people and all their 'going to wedding, lunch and winery' outfits! The bathroom was small and needed an extra shelf or two, but worked fine. Very comfortable beds, a couple of easy chairs, good lighting and a complimentary bottle of wine. You can do a spot of wine tasting downstairs, head to the Tavern for a beer, explore the museum and town, eat at one of several cafes, or just chill out on the upstairs verandah and watch the world (and all the motor bikes!) go by. Very helpful staff too. Oh - no tv reception here so no tv.
