Situated on one of Australia's oldest colonial working farms, The Barracks provides boutique accommodation on a unique heritage site. Four suites have been beautifully restored to provide elegant comforts in the same space where convicts and farmhands worked and toiled over 150 years ago. Each suite allows guests to enjoy the same views of sweeping hillsides and colonial buildings in air conditioned comfort. For those cool evenings, at the push of a button, a restored fireplace is available to warm the sitting room. The sitting room, kitchenette and bathroom are downstairs while upstairs are the sleeping quarters. Queen sized beds are in three of the suites with one suite providing two king sized single beds. Tea and coffee making facilities are available in each little kitchenette with a Nespresso machine, kettle, toaster and a bar fridge provided. A breakfast hamper is complimentary and delivered to your suite each morning of your stay.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

My husband and I stayed at The Barracks Tocal for the weekend and it was absolutely beautiful. The room was just gorgeous. A little piece of paradise in the country. So peaceful and quiet. The breakfast was amazing with a huge variety. Kali was lovely and was happy to answer our questions on the history of the Homestead. Highly recommend.

An amazing piece of Australian history that started in 1822 and is still going strong with many of the original buildings still intact. The accomodation in the Barracks is totally unique and they were build in 1835 to accommodate convicts and later workers and their families.

What a beautiful location. Gorgeous renovated accommodation without taking away the historic charm. Super hot water in the shower, which was welcome on a 3 degree morning. Very romantic getaway for couples. The bed was extremely comfortable and warm with beautiful views from the bedroom windows. The tour of the homestead is well worth a look too.

If you're after quaint, tranquil and luxurious experience then come to the Barracks tocal. We stayed in the beautiful Hazell room and it was beautiful to walk in the room to a roaring fire and a hot cup of tea after our winter wedding. Breakfast in the morning was lovely and the staff were very helpful and friendly. The backdrop of the property was stunning to wake up to. Thank you for a wonderful stay. We loved it.

Wonderful location. Beautiful outlook over the estate and the surrounding countryside. Staff were very welcoming, friendly and helpful. The breakfast hamper was wonderful. Spent several hours looking around the estate and tour of the homestead. The history presentation and tour by the Friends jf Tocal volunteers was a real bonus. Highly recommended.

What an incredible spot! From the moment we arrived we were met by the beautiful caretaker Kali, who made us feel immediately at home. We stayed in the Wagoner Barracks. All the accommodation is the same, just slightly different views. Although small in width, with their tall ceilings and beautiful interior they feel both cosy and roomy at the same time! They are complimented by a little kitchenette, a fire, and AirCon. The bed was comfy (a harder mattress), the rooms clean, and the views beautiful. Sunset was incredible, with sunrise matching it with the addition of mist and a lovely breakfast platter! The property sports many attractions from pigs, to the old barns, blacksmith, and local horse ‘Harry’ who loves a good scratch. All of the attractions have little plaques to give you insight into the history of the place. We stayed for one night before the tasting pre-wedding which was a really nice way to get to see the property properly before the big day and to have a little trip away together. We would highly recommend it!

Loved staying at the Barracks pre and post my daughters wonderful Tocal wedding. The rooms are well set up and we loved using the verandah for natural light doing our make up. It was also a lovely spot to have a glass of champagne together. The views are beautiful. After a huge day the close proximity of our room was much appreciated and the post wedding breakfast with family next day was excellent too. Lovely breakfast trays delivered with perfect timing to our rooms. Beautiful rooms, excellent breakfast and divine views.

We spent Easter weekend at the Barracks (in the Waggoner room) and what an amazing stay we had. Everything was perfect. The view, the peace and quiet, the incredible sunsets, the staff, the beautifully restored rooms, the delicious breakfast hampers (we asked for gluten-free and dairy-free and the food was varied and delicious every day). All of this immersed in nature but only 15 minutes drive from Maitland and 5 minutes from Paterson where we found many cute cafes. We also visited the Homestead, which is free when you stay at the Barracks and I can't recommend it enough. What a fascinating piece of history. We also enjoyed the pool, which is part of the College near by but is free to use for guests of the Barracks. It was so peaceful (we were the only ones there each time!) and so clean. I really cannot recommend this place enough!
