Detailed Reviews
All in all, beautiful room, convenient location, (way better then average), appliances need work, cleanliness needs work, could do with less passive aggressive warnings everywhere about different surcharges for silly things, but would consider staying again.
We Stayed here on the long weekend. It was a hassle to go and get the keys from down the road, and there are a lot of rules and a warning of surcharges every where you step. We got into the room, it was pretty, high class, at first glace, convenient kitchen with utensil's and everything you need (i recommend BBQ, because the pots and pans will burn everything and if you set the alarm off, you'll get a surcharge!) Nice rooms, a little out door area, pool was dirty and i couldn't find anything to clean it with. Had a really cool little cupboard with the dryer and washing machine, which is awesome and handy! but the appliances need cleaning and an update (the air-cons' cover came off and the filter fell out, it was covered in dust and clogged, the fridge didn't get cold, so our food went off, the range hood hung down) there was supposed to be 2 sofa beds, was only one. The bathroom was tiny, and everything got wet when the shower was on (could do with an exhaust fan) and there was furry mould absolutely flourishing in the tiles (i believe someone left their shaven hairs, black in colour, as a gift? haha) which made finding the little 'cleaned for your hygiene' paper on the toilet, slightly offensive. The room has to be cleaned, and i mean cleaned, before you leave it, or surprise, you get a surcharge. The gate to the patio needs a lock or something, because in the night, i had to chase off a thief who had my clothes. It was literally a short walk from multiple beautiful beaches, and a koala spotting trail, really handy location. I think they spent some money fixing the place to be pretty, and ran out when it came to the decoration and design (which is lovely) but the appliances shouldn't be advertised if they don't work, are falling apart, or are filthy, especially when your warned that broken appliances will incur a surcharge, it makes it scary to wonder wither they know or not and whether your going to have to pay for something you had to suffer with. Though cleanliness is one of the most important parts of the hotel industry, so that needs attention.

The accommodation was advertised as having 2 pet friendly apartments. We were travelling with 2 small dogs, 2 adults and a teenager. Im not sure what exactly which part was pet friendly or how this apartment would differ from any other. It had a tiled outdoor small patio and a gate through which you had to take the dogs out onto the street to the toilet. We asked for directions to the beach, and walked the dogs down there only to find that there were no dogs allowed on the beach or in the adjacent parkland. It might have been nice to know that before we walked all the way down there. So then we decided to go have some fish and chips and sit somewhere so the dogs could stretch their legs. Every single piece of grass, picnic table, bench and beach we went to there were signs to say no dogs allowed. In summary I guess if you have pets Shoal Bay in general is not the place to visit!!!! The apartment was clean and the staff were nice but I would definitely not classify it as Pet Friendly especially for the extra price!!!!

Response from SBBCA, Grant & Shelley - Managers at Shoal Bay Beach Apartments
Responded 5 Apr 2010
We do advertise our complex as having 2 pet friendly apartments. These apartments differ from our others in that they are situated on the ground floor with gate access off a balcony to a grassed area. We pride ourselves on the fact that these are the only differences to our other apartments. As having animals ourselves we know what it is like to book a 'pet friendly' apartment only to find that you are in a small, run down room at the back corner of the property. Our pet friendly apartments have exactly the same fixtures and fittings as all of our other aparments. We now offer 3 rooms as pet friendly and all of these have direct access to a fully enclosed shared grassed area that the dogs are free to play in. We are sad to hear that you didnt find anywhere where you were able to enjoy your holiday with your pets, however if asked we would have been able to suggest ample beaches that allow dogs to run off the lead and the majority of cafes at Shoal Bay do not mind a dog sitting under the table whilst the owners enjoy a hot breakfast or relaxing lunch. Our pet friendly apartments are always the first ones to book out and we have never before had a guest say that they didnt think Shoal Bay was a Pet Friendly area. All it would take was a morning walk to see the amount of locals that have pets and enjoy them as part of their daily life. We are very glad to hear that your apartment was clean and you were happy with the service you received.

We picked up the keys from a building located on the main road into Nelson Bay which was convenient. Upon ariving we realised that it was just an apartment block, certainly not a normal beach club and the pool was also very very verve small. The apartment itself was very clean and spacious, the downside was the so called amenities pack which was minuscule and had no soap.
The biggest problem was our neighbours who were very noisy and loud and partied till 1am, the rules clearly stated that no parties or excessive noise so we complained to the management company who said they would phone the occupants but told us if it happened again we should phone the police.
Next night they were dancing and shouting on the balcony till we said we would call the police. This should not be our responsibility the management company should be upholding the clearly printed rules.

When i checked in. I was asked for my credit card so they could take a pre-authorisation of $100 which is standard. But then i was asked to also write out all my credit card details on a form including the 3 digit number on the back of the card. I asked why i had to do this when they already had swiped my credit card and taken a $100 pre-authorisation. The lady was very rude and said if i do any damage over $100 they need my card details to claim. I said that's not right you now have my details from the swipe you did. She said that's the rules. I said i am worried about the security of my credit card details. She said we shred it after you check out. I then got to my unit and it was very hot. I went to turn on the AC only to discover the remote had no batteries in it. I rang the office and got the same lady who said you will have to come down and get some batteries of us. (it was a 10min drive away with scarce parking). I said why wasn't the room checked for this to which she said with a very rude tone. "Sir, if the last guest didn't tell us there were no batteries in the remote how are we supposed to know?" I said that maybe your cleaners should have a check list. She replied "Do you want batteries or not!" I was quite angry with her attitude so i told her i would fix it myself and hung up. Also the AC filters were filthy and i had to clean them to get it to work properly. I will never stay here again!!!!!!

You might not realise when booking this apartment that you have to pick up your key by 5pm. If you arrive even a few minutes after this, you need to pay a $20 late fee. As we arrived at 5.15pm, another family arrived at the same time. We were met by a grumpy security guard who charged us BOTH $20...surely should be $10 each? But the worst was yet to come. My son became ill overnight and vomited on his sheets. Winning Holidays wanted to charge us for new linen ($53), and also to pick up the clean linen ourselves from the office down the road AND wash the dirty sheets ourselves (what exactly were we paying for?). The lady in the office was pretty rude. On top of this, no soap provided for shower, no shelves in wardrobes. Generally a fail and we won't be back.

Booked this at the last minute on lastminute.com. Arrived at the accommodation within the operating hours specified in the last minute.com confirmation email but was met with a sign saying we had to drive down the road to the other office to pick up the keys. Drove to the office to find it shut with a sign saying we had to phone a security company to collect our keys. Phoned the 'security' man who was one of the rudest individuals I've met. Demanded we pay $20 for his 'call out service'. When I said I wasn't willing to pay as this hadn't been specified in our booking he said we could either pay or he would escort us out the premises and we could find our keys ourselves. In the end we had to pay him to get the keys. The accommodation was poor value for the price. Sofa had some dodgy stains on them. 3 glasses in an apartment that should sleep 4 etc. We have avoided this accommodation option when returning to the Nelson Bay Area. If you sell your accommodation through a third party you should be willing to honor the terms that are in the third party's emails.

Booked thru Hotels.com and was not informed that keys have to be picked up elsewhere until we arrived at the property and found a note requesting guests to pick up/drop off keys at 47 Shoal Bay road. Upon arriving at the Winning Holidays office at Shoal Bay town centre, we then found out that we have to call after hours security who then charged us a $20 (cash only) call out fee. The room is physically clean however it had a very damp smell which we later found out was due to the washing machine in the closet that has dirty water still undrained. and can't be drained because it's broken. There were also no other amenities e.g. shampoo, body wash besides the bath towels. The room light in the 2nd bedroom has also fused, luckily we have a table lamp still working. We were also unable to open the glass doors to air the room as there were no fly screens preventing bugs from flying in. The hot water pipes were rattling so hard from pressure we were afraid it might burst while having a shower. Funnily enough, this apartment is also on the market for 420k, highly overpriced for what is a very basic groundfloor 2BR shared small toilet, uncovered carport right next to the main road, which the owner may potentially have to spend another fortune fixing.

Recently stayed here with a sporting group for one night. The rooms were cramped and VERY hot! We also cleaned the rooms as requested and still got charged a cleaning fee!! Ridiculous! I have done a lot of travelling and stayed in loads of hotels and apartments and I have never had this issue anywhere else. In fact, I'm pretty sure, from how black our feet got, the apartment was cleaner when we left than when we got there!!
Never staying here again and wouldn't recommend it to anyone else!

Please note that there is no reception there and you have to drive down the road to the winning holidays office to obtain them. If you arrive after 5pm they have a security guard that pockets $20 cash for his troubles to come down and give you a key. He complained when asked for a receipt and said it was a cash business! I told him I wasn't going to leave without one as its the law so he reluctantly scribbled one out that isn't an official receipt anyway (see picture).
The rooms are standard and come with no soap, tea, coffee or milk unlike even a budget place that has all of these.
The dvd player didnt work but no point complaining as their rules (that you only get after paying) state that they are not liable to discount for or do anything about faulty equipment.
Don't forget you get charged if you don't take the keys back up the road to winning holidays they will charge you for that too!
