Detailed Reviews
I stayed here with my husband for a mid-week get away. The renovations are tasteful leaving a fresh, clean vibe to the place. I love old-style hotels!
I agree with earlier reviews regarding bedside tables on both sides of the bed, bedside lamps, bathroom storage, a rubbish bin in the bedroom and most importantly, a bathroom door. There were Power points by the bed and a mirror in the bathroom early in 2022, but no shower screen yet. Knowing that more features are on the way, doesn’t help when there is no bathroom door and it’s basically an open plan room.
More than 2 teabags would have been useful. I requested more, no issue, but having more provided seems obvious. Wi-fi would also be appreciated.
The food in the restaurant was excellent. The little gelato shop connected to the hotel was amazing. Every staff member we interacted with was friendly, helpful and professional. The bed was comfy. We had no trouble with noise. Parking was easy once the tradies left the car park.
We didn’t think it was an expensive hotel. The meals were reasonably priced. The 15 for $15 were generously sized and delicious. Just be prepared for the bathroom!

We chose to stay at the Imperial because the images online looked lovely. The reality is, this recently renovated, revamped accommodation forgot to put somebody practical in charge.
For instance, in the huge ensuite there is no where to place your toiletries or makeup except the floor; there is no power point for styling your hair in front of the mirror (and no mirror in the bedroom/kitchenette); no power points next to the bed and no bedside reading lamps. The open plan ensuite would be fine except the slope to the drain isn't steep enough so 50% of the floor got wet from the shower.
On top of that, our room faced the street and the noise from loud cars in the evening, garbage trucks very early in the morning and room doors along the corridor banging, was not conducive to uninterrupted sleep.
Also there was no WiFi connection which is a no no in 2021!
Such a shame when it is obvious a lot of money has gone into revamping a lovely old building.

Response from Imperial Hotel, Owner at The Imperial Hotel Murwillumbah
Responded 21 July 2021
Hi there Julie, Thank you for taking the time to send us a review about your stay. Although we understand and appreciate your feedback, a lot of these concerns are being rectified. We have been renovating for years, and we have not completed the renovations. In the list of things still to do, are address many of your concerns such as sliding doors on the bathroom to manage the water escaping and wetting the floor, shelving still to be added in the bathrooms, body-length full sized mirrors are still to be installed, bed-side reading lights will be extended from the ceiling as we are unable to create any new power-points in the rooms due to the structure of the old building being as it is. As for the street noise, unfortunately that is completely out of our control, however we do provide ear plugs for any light sleepers to manage the noise as best as possible. It is an old Hotel at the end of the day, and it is in the very center of town. The WIFI situation is also being remedied, we have had on-going problems since connecting up to NBN however hopefully the next time you are in town, we have this rectified too! Thanks again for your feedback. Imperial Hotel.

Decided on lunch at this venue on a lovely sunny Sunday.
We were welcomed by a smiling happy natured floor staffer, and handed the menus. Seating inside was Covid distance safe, but we opted to sit outside in a safe courtyard adjacent to the main st. I selected from the 10 meals @ $10 ea menu, and my chicken shnitzel + side sauce was perfect. Will definitely return on a next drive out in the rurals.

I rarely give bad reviews but this was one of the worst accommodation experiences I have had. First there is no lift so accommodation, which is all on the upper floor, requires bags to be carried up stairs. The hotel has been recently renovated so was clean and new. They were not set up for NSW accommodation vouchers. There were no electrical outlets in the bedrooms. Rooms were small with a bed, a cupboard and an attached mini-kitchen/bathroom/toilet. However, we discovered that the bathroom/toilet in every room had no door! People in the shower could be seen from outside in the hallway when the door was opened (the shower itself was actually very good with lots of hot water and pressure). People in the toilet could be seen and heard in the mini-kitchen. We were given Room 22, only 1 m away from a bank of very loud air conditioners that switched on and off all night every 4 minutes. The smoke alarm in the ceiling had a green laser light bright enough to light up the room all night and directed straight into your eyes while in bed. At least we did not need a night light. After hours (10 pm?) the main doors are shut and entry is by stairs and outer doors. These were used constantly by other guests, and one entry door near our room made a noise like a gun shot every time it was closed throughout the night. Patrons gathered in the car park and smoking area until late in the night making loud noise which could be easily heard in the upstairs bedrooms. While there is central air conditioning, there are no in-room controls so if the air is too hot (it was) or cold, your only option is to leave the room door open. This is the worst $150 I have ever spent at an Australian accommodation. Avoid at all costs.

We emailed this pub one Thurs hoping to visit the next day for lunch - we wanted to look at the menu. No reply in time for Friday but received one a few days later with apology, menu and offer of free first drinks if we were to visit. Visited last week and free drink was honoured for the two of us. Menu is quite interesting - usual pub fare plus some "exotics". Cheap specials are all $15. Partner had $15 chicken schnitzel and I had $15 tostada which was unexpectedly huge and beautiful but not a good choice for a small eater! Next time will pick something from the "light lunch" menu. Pub is recently renovated, large, open and airy with beautiful tile floor and stained glass doors and windows. Friendly and efficient service. Did not sample accommodation.

We had drinks and dinner. Lovely charming classic design, clean establishment, amazing friendly staff service, food menu was traditional pub food from chicken snitzels, steak to some seafood options, food prices really good, I had chicken snitzel with chips it was large and yummy cooked well and my wife had salt & pepper squid also good. Live music on Saturday and Sunday afternoon, I can highly reccommend visiting if in the area. I also heard talks of the hotel soon finishing accommodation upstairs which is very exciting.

Fantastic Value and a pleasant surprise. An immaculately clean room that looked as though it has been recently refurbished.
We had a superior queen room that had a kitchenette and a sitting area.
Meals in the bistro were good value with 15 meals at $15 and excellent quality.
The bar staff were friendly and attentive.
Good vibe for old and young, highly recommended and will stay next time we travel through
Air conditioning in the room is ducted and no control for the room, so it was a bit stuffy.
Booking in was a bit clumbsy and they kept us waiting for a while but the bar staff did make us comfortable.
No powerpoints next to the bed so my husband couldn't use his CPAP machine. We did ask for an extension lead but wasn't available.
Confusing access to the rooms but once we found our way, it was ok.
Parking with a trailer wasn't possible and we had to park on the street with a 2 hr limit.

Last night I couldn't be bothered cooking so I rang my friend and said come on, lets go to the club but it was closed at 7.15. (PH fair enough) so we went to the Imperial Hotel where we've never been. The service, food and atmosphere were great. Chicken parmigiana (you couldn't jump over), salad and chips, fish, chips and salad all for $35 for 2. Thanks guys and gals, we will definitely be back.

I booked Friday 24 & Saturday 25th May to attend a 60th birthday party on the Saturday night.
Returning to the hotel after dinner on the Friday night I was kept awake until 11pm by pub patrons drunkenly yelling in the yard at the rear of the hotel, adjacent to my room.
I was told when I checked in I was told that there was a music event to be held on Saturday afternoon, also in the yard. Hoping for a nap after lunch before the evening’s party was impossible - a crowd of hundreds with thumping rock music from 1-7pm. Then awoken at 6am on Sunday morning by the crew dismantling the stage & marquees.
Had the hotel advised me that the venue had live music until 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays and had a scheduled live music event on the Saturday, I would never have booked the hotel.
And it wasn’t cheap - $353 for two nights.
The owners need to decide if they are running an accommodation facility or a music venue.
If you want to get a decent night’s sleep, stay elsewhere.

I'm sorry to hear that your experience with us wasn't a great one James! And appreciate your feedback - while pubs and live music do go hand-in-hand, we'll be making sure we improve our communication with guests ahead of the next event and limit noise where possible. Thank you for staying at The Impy.

Do you like to poo in front of your partner or loved one, or hear them poo, then this place is for you.
Inexplicably despite having well furnished rooms, albeit slightly overpriced, they forgot to add a door to a bathroom , including the toilet, (our bathroom didnt even have a window) which makes it slightly inconvenient for most I would imagine.
If your s**t doesn’t stink or you’re a toilet exhibitonist then you might like it, but otherwise it’s a bit odd. Room is nice all said and done, roomy with a big screen TV (no individual air con) and the pub is great, awesome staff, but just a door to the bathroom is a simple thing someone forgot in the design of it all.
