An easy 1 ¼ hour drive from Sydney is the beautiful regional town of Mittagong in the Southern Highlands. How fortunate we were to get a booking at the magnificent Old Bank property, right in the heart of town on Main Street ( 5 minutes from the Railway Station) This amazing boutique hotel has loads of history dating back to 1892 and was built for the grand sum of 2840 pound. It was the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney’s premises from 1892 through to 1970 . Word has it, it was the Bank Managers residence until it became dilapidated and was sold in 2008 to the present owners ( who apparently have recently on sold it ) The renovation here took 7 years to complete. The restoration is amazing down to the finest detail. The 5 suites, have all been tastefully and uniquely refurbished to the high Victorian style. The convict built coach house and stables are now a studio and self -contained cottage and sit behind the main building alongside the large secure 8 space car park. You need a week here to peruse every photo on every wall , and absorb the detail throughout. Large brown Chesterfield leather lounge suites adorn the Drawing Room around an open fire. Above the fireplace hangs an ornate gilt mirror, and long red drapes fall from the high ceilings to the floor with tie backs. The mahogany tables and desks sit snuggly against every wall with books and memorabilia of all shapes and sizes. Vases are filled with bunches of fragrant roses from the property’s garden and a homemade cake with drizzle icing sits under a mesh dome cover for guests to help themselves to morning and afternoon tea. The table lamps shed soft lighting throughout the entire ground floor , which is such a welcoming space. The suites, while quite small were built 129 years ago to that of a bygone era. Each room is unique in its décor. Layered window coverings, pelmets, shutters, swags and pull string light switches are all there. The bathrooms have been tastefully updated to feel unique and full of old world charm. The shower rose is sublime as is the underfloor heating through the granite and marble tiles. Crisp white towels and toiletries are plentiful in the bathroom. There’s loads of cushions surrounding the queen bed, a TV, A/C ,lounge chairs and side tables with lamps are in each room. The wooden shutters on the windows not only looked great but were very practical. You can’t leave this property without viewing the 170 year old (one tonne) bank vault also, which today houses the Dining Rooms wine cellar. If you crave history, look no further it’s all here in bucket loads. This is a charming, historic boutique hotel in the heart of the Southern Highlands and while on Main Street , it is so very peaceful and quiet inside. I didn’t get to meet the owners so I’m guessing I need to get back there real soon. A delightful place to stay where everything has been thought of for the house guests. Its within walking distance of every restaurant in Mittagong. Book a seat at Paste Restaurant well in advance, you won’t be disappointed. This hotel is a total gem I highly recommend it.…
We just stayed at The Old Bank Hotel for one night and we wish we’d stayed longer! It’s a nice town and Barb was a wonderful host. Very kind and warm — she told me so much about the history of the building too and I loved all of the historic photography throughout. There was also some nice homemade Biscotti — which was a nice touch. The building is absolutely beautiful! They’ve kept the character of the building and paid attention to all the small details too! The heated floor in the bathroom was a nice surprise, especially because it’s Winter! Comfy bed and a real homey but luxe vibe. We would stay here again — 100%
A group of 12 of us attended the Old Bank Hotel, Mittagong for an absolutely sensational High Tea today. The food, prepared and cooked by one of the owners, Barbara was fantastic. None of us left feeling hungry. A beautiful variety of food which included a shot of soup, quiches and sausages rolls, sandwiches, cakes and desserts and the best scones with homemade strawberry jam and cream. A big thank you to our hostess, Tina who did a wonderful job of looking after us with a smile on her face the whole time. What an asset you are to the Hotel! A big thank you, I’m sure we will all be back again!
Visited with friends for the high tea. It was an absolutely wonderful experience. We were seated on the outdoor terrace which was lovely. Delicate morsels of food prepared fresh in the morning. Each item had so many different elements to it. First course was a tasting of pea and ham soup. On the three tiered stand there were hot savory items, sandwich assortment and then two layers of sweet treats. Separate serve of plain and white chocolate scones came with homemade jam and cream. We had to take home the extra cakes. Great value and we will definitely visit again
My husband and I had a most beautiful anniversary weekend at The Old Bank Hotel. It really is something special and adding to the experience are the wonderful Barbara and Warwick who just could not be better hosts. Never intrusive but always up for a friendly chat or helpful tips on the area. The rooms are perfectly restored and spotlessly clean with everything you need. The bed was super comfy and linens top quality. Barbara had fresh baked cake available in the common areas and there is plenty of areas to sit by fire and relax. The gardens are gorgeous. You can have a hotel style room or a cabin or studio or book the lot for large groups. Very close to some top restaurants etc. Highly recommended..
