Detailed Reviews
My wife and I stayed at the Old Bank Hotel for two nights. Could not have had a more pleasurable time. We stayed in one of the cottages, a little more expensive than the rooms inside the main building, but well worth the small additional amount. The facilities were spotless, the quality of the fittings and furniture was impeccable. The air conditioning was more than adequate for the chilly highlands weather. Very cosy indeed. As a guest, you pretty much have the run of the sumptuous lounge areas in the main building, including the open fire. Nice Sunday afternoon in front of the open fire watching the footy on the big screen. Might of enjoyed a glass or two of red as well.
The owner/operators, Warwick and Barbara could not have been more helpful, recommending and booking a couple of top shelf restaurants for us before our arrival. We enjoyed a tour of the other rooms in the hotel, all of which oozed old world charm. Very well appointed and welcoming.
We will definitely be returning to the Old Bank Hotel whenever we we're staying in the highlands.

This beautifully restored historic building is full of charm and character, from the gorgeous couches by the fireside in the lounge room to the elegant dining room. Our room was large, spotlessly clean and truly luxurious...worth every cent. The bedding, the artwork, the underfloor heating in the bathroom, everything in the room seemed carefully considered. The lovely lady who checked us in was helpful, friendly and informative. Highly recommend.

My husband and I had a most beautiful anniversary weekend at The Old Bank Hotel. It really is something special and adding to the experience are the wonderful Barbara and Warwick who just could not be better hosts. Never intrusive but always up for a friendly chat or helpful tips on the area.
The rooms are perfectly restored and spotlessly clean with everything you need.
The bed was super comfy and linens top quality.
Barbara had fresh baked cake available in the common areas and there is plenty of areas to sit by fire and relax.
The gardens are gorgeous. You can have a hotel style room or a cabin or studio or book the lot for large groups.
Very close to some top restaurants etc. Highly recommended..

The Old Bank Hotel is on the main street in Mittagong and the entrance is from the rear. At first sight it is a bit auster and grand as you would expect from an old bank, and this theme runs through the establishment. I was the only guest during my two day stay and it made for a rather errie feeling. No breakfasts as the owner was away and not a great selection of restaurants without driving some distance. The rooms are rather small and my request for a desk could not be met other than bringing inside a small metal desk from the balcony. As the ceilings are tall and the furnishings are dark, it gave a sombre, unfriendly feel. The bed was comfortable and it is a good spot to explore the Southern Highlands, but information pack was poor and a visit to the information office in Mittagong was essential. I won't be recommending The Old Bank. Oh and finally, I stayed for 2 nights and they took 2 seperate payments for each day. No problem in thet, but for overseas visitors, it incurs double fees. Not great value for money.

Response from BarbaraW3944, Owner at The Old Bank Hotel
Responded 27 Mar 2020
Thank you Peter B for your review of the Old Bank. The observation that you were the only guest on the particular Monday and Tuesday is correct because, sadly, your stay was at a time when the Coronavirus Pandemic had just started to ramp up in Australia and when accommodation bookings not only here but worldwide were being cancelled. As listed in our information pack, there are at least 15 fine restaurants, pubs and clubs, mostly licensed, within walking distance of the Old Bank offering breakfast, lunch and dinner of a vast range of modern and traditional fare. I apologize that breakfast was not available on the particular mornings of your stay. It was a great idea that you checked in with the knowledgeable and helpful staff at the Tourist Information Centre who are fully equipped to guide through our area. Room areas and ceiling heights in the Old Bank were determined some 130 years ago when the masonry building was constructed, some by felons banished across the seas. Individual room sizes from which to chose today are readily available on the various booking platforms. It is noted that you chose the smallest and cheapest room. The pull-out writing tablet, featured in the accommodation's built-in furniture is considered adequate for casual use. If not, the fully air conditioned dining area, library and/or lounge with WIFI are always available for one to spread out in total privacy and comfort whilst enjoying complimentary tea, coffee and biscotti. Dark furnishings used are in sympathy with Australian Cedar and WA Jarrah widely used during the reign of Queen Victoria. You are quite correct in that two payments were taken, one deposit to secure accommodation when booking and the second being balance owing at check-out. Clearly, you were not charged double fees but a separate Bank Merchant Charge for each transaction. I apologize that your stay was not as expected but hope the above allays your concerns and now look forward to warmly welcoming you back to the Old Bank in the future once the current dire situation subsides. Wishing you safe travelling, good health and with Kindest Regards, Warwick Wainberg.

The Old Bank Hotel is unique and restored beautifully. Many of the original features have been retained with new additions in keeping with the period. Our visit to Mittagong was made all the more special by staying in such a beautiful heritage building. The rooms are well appointed and the beds extremely comfortable. In addition the owners are very welcoming and happy to accommodate any requests. We also recommend dining at Paste Restaurant. The food is exceptional.

Visited with friends for the high tea. It was an absolutely wonderful experience. We were seated on the outdoor terrace which was lovely. Delicate morsels of food prepared fresh in the morning. Each item had so many different elements to it. First course was a tasting of pea and ham soup. On the three tiered stand there were hot savory items, sandwich assortment and then two layers of sweet treats. Separate serve of plain and white chocolate scones came with homemade jam and cream. We had to take home the extra cakes. Great value and we will definitely visit again

The old bank in Mittagong has been meticulously restored and we loved our stay here. The rooms are luxurious with every thing you would need for a night in the highlands. We had the Albert room which is at the back of the property, with district views and a balcony. The hosts are lovely and nothing was too much trouble. We will definitely stay here again!

A group of 12 of us attended the Old Bank Hotel, Mittagong for an absolutely sensational High Tea today. The food, prepared and cooked by one of the owners, Barbara was fantastic. None of us left feeling hungry. A beautiful variety of food which included a shot of soup, quiches and sausages rolls, sandwiches, cakes and desserts and the best scones with homemade strawberry jam and cream. A big thank you to our hostess, Tina who did a wonderful job of looking after us with a smile on her face the whole time. What an asset you are to the Hotel! A big thank you, I’m sure we will all be back again!

After checking their website and looking at the photos, I decided to book for 2 nights.
The site showed some lovely architecture from a bygone era, with cosy facilities.
I booked the stables out the back as the 6 rooms in the main house showed being fully booked.
My cottage was well appointed and clean. Unfortunately the only thing heritage about it was the facade and curtains.
On my second day I decided to go up and have a look at the main house, only to discover that the access gates were all locked.
I rang to find out how to access the house, to be told that the owners had moved into the house and it was closed to the public.
This meant that I had paid $325 per night to stay in an oversized motel room, out the back, with no access to any of the facilities advertised on their web site. I don't know what it's called now, but it used to be false advertising.
To say that I felt totally ripped off would be an understatement.
They need to update their web site and drop the rates drastically.
If I had been advised that the house was closed to the public when I booked, I never would have made the booking.

We just stayed at The Old Bank Hotel for one night and we wish we’d stayed longer! It’s a nice town and Barb was a wonderful host. Very kind and warm — she told me so much about the history of the building too and I loved all of the historic photography throughout.
There was also some nice homemade Biscotti — which was a nice touch.
The building is absolutely beautiful! They’ve kept the character of the building and paid attention to all the small details too!
The heated floor in the bathroom was a nice surprise, especially because it’s Winter! Comfy bed and a real homey but luxe vibe.
We would stay here again — 100%
