Detailed Reviews
We have been going to The Broken Banyan each year for the past 22 years. I guess that is a strong recommendation in itself. If you want a "real" Island experience then this is certainly the place to go.
Peaceful garden setting for the 6 well-equipped units. Barbara and her dog Charlotte will certainly make you feel both welcome and at home.
We love the self-catering as it gives the opportunity to shop locally and really get to live the island life. If you want to sample one of the excellent restaurants on the island Barbara will drive you to the restaurant and the restaurants will see you home again.
Great place to stay and our home away from home.

We had an amazing stay at the Broken Banyan – couldn’t ask for much better. We were met by our friendly host, Barbara, at the airport, given a quick town tour and a stop at the grocery store, and then whisked to our lodging up the hill. The location was pretty good, just a short bike ride from the restaurants and grocery stores. Our room, part of the duplex, was a 1 bedroom apartment with veranda. The room was clean and comfortable with plenty of natural light. The kitchenette was functional, with stove, fridge, microwave, toaster, and kettle and we cooked up a number of meals there. We were disappointed that tea and coffee fixings were not provided – still using the tired old Covid excuse which I don’t understand. The Wifi worked well and was our only real contact with the outside world. Lots of wood hens and banded rails running around the place – great entertainment! There is a guest laundry and gas BBQ area on site as well. The best way to get around the island is by bike and they can be rented just down the hill for a reasonable price. One recommendation: book your dinners beforehand. The restaurants are few and not open every night. We missed out one night and ended up having to cook our own food for dinner. Overall we had an amazing stay and would definitely recommend this place to other travellers.

A very basic cabin which is affordable on a quite expensive island and very clean. Do not expect anything special though, after all, you always get what you pay for.
This is not a complaint, Barbara is a good host, friendly, looks after you and ensures that you have a clean place but it is a bit dated. There are no extras thrown in, expect to buy everything except salt and pepper.
WiFi is limited but available in immediate area of the laundry, some cabins will get the signal but most will not, you will have to walk. Again, this is holiday on a gorgeous island so you should be out an about and this should only be used for must do communication.
It is an affordable place to sleep, get out and enjoy the island.

We spent a week in December 2021 at the Broken Banyan and enjoyed it immensely. As was mentioned in the previous review (Howe Cosy), Barbara is a wonderful host and made our stay special.
With only 6x 1 bedroom units on the property, it was delightfully quiet and restful. We loved the arrangement whereby the accommodation places provide transport to restaurants in the evening, a t the restaurants return you to your accommodation after your meal.
Make sure you book restaurants ASAP after you arrive, or better still prior to arriving, as they are limited in numbers and keenly sought after.
Lord Howe is a stunningly beautiful island, with secluded beaches, great walks, snorkeling and manic scenery. You will not be disappointed!

We are fans of these lovely apartments. In our past 17 visits to The Broken Banyan we have at one time or another stayed in every one of the 6 units. If you want a "real" island experience then The Broken Banyan is for you. There are BBQs in the beautiful gardens that we use most nights despite the excellent cooking facilities in the rooms. So peaceful and a great way to drop off the planet for your vacation.
The rooms are clean and the beds comfy. You live the island life. Your host Barbara (and her dog Charlotte) treat you more as a member of the family than a guest.
This is a place for couples wanting a genuine island experience. My wife and I could not recommend The Broken Banyan more highly for those wanting to engage with the island. You become an islander rather than a tourist. This is not some generic accommodation that could be found any where in a holiday destination but an authentic Lord Howe experience.

We stayed in Banyan apartments for 5 nights as part of a package. This was the 3rd time on LHI with the previous 2 being at Pine Trees in full board style of residence. So being aware of the food prices on LHI we were a little concerned about the potential hidden cost. Not a problem! Although food is a little more pricey than on the mainland it is OK and as expected. Across the road from BA is the Pandamus restaurant which is a great little place to eat and experience high quality fresh food at no worse than being in Sydney. The other options are to purchase food packs from the Top shop and have a BBQ meal. There are ample on the BBQs on site and they are great value. The apartments themselves are basic but clean. The satellite TV is a nice touch. They are situated a fair way up the hill from Lagoon Road, but thats OK as walking is a favourite pastime on LHI. Mike who is looking after the place is happy to drive you to a restaurant and they all supply transport back. Be sure to take a torch with you (supplied) as the roads get very dark once the sun goes down.
Overall we would stay there again as a reasonable cost alternative to the more up market choices.

Barbara was a wonderful host, being very helpful with advice and driving as to the shops and restaurants and to and from the airport.
The unit was basic but comfortable and just what you need for a stay on this lovely island with it's wonderfully simple and slow-paced lifestyle.
The kitchenette was well equipped so we could cook some meals in.
The location is 15 to 20 min walk into 'town' and is about the same distance from the three stores on the island. Walking is fine but grab yourself a bicycle from a local hire place. Nothing is very far away from anything on Lord Howe!

On our last full day now after a fantastic week on the island. Banyan Apartments are centrally located up a bit of a hill with fresh cooling breezes. Very comfortable units in a garden setting. Modern flat screen TV with cable connection to all the usual Australian channels. Free wifi. Large flyscreened windows let in those cool breezes, not that there are any flies or mozzies. Basic cooking facilities in the room and monster BBQ in the garden. Look out for the woodhens and buff-banded rails fossicking in the garden. Wonderful hosts Greg and Marina picked us up at the airport and have looked after us all week, driving us to dinner each night (bowling club is the best eatery). Nothing is too much trouble. They took a genuine interest in our daily adventures, so hopefully they can pass on useful advice to future guests. I think the island is best enjoyed by those who enjoy walking and pushbiking, and have a modicum of fitness. There are a few hills, but, hey, this is a volcano, and that's what makes it so spectacular. Banyan Apartments were the perfect accommodation for our holiday, ang Greg and Marina the perfect hosts.

I have been at Broken Banyan hotel with my partner. I would like to thank to Jim & Janet for making everything so easy for us and being so friendly and professionals . They pick up us at the airport and took us back there the last day. The apartment (4) was very clean and tidy, new big screen TV and new fridge. Janet took our bikes back to Wilsons Hire Service the last day and pick up in the city centre so we had some more time to enjoy before going to the airport. At night the apartment was completely in silence, we saw beautiful stars from the garden. The island is very quite, the water is transparent, we saw turtles, fed fish, did some kayak, and a wonderful snorkelling tour. There are a lot of restaurants but they are expensive so we took all our food from Sydney, there is a new BBQ in the hotel gardens, and few around the island with free wood available. We can't wait to go back. David & Mattia

Towels are supplied and I believe Ron and Sue will sort you out with detergent. We take enough gear so we don't need to wash, after all we are on holidays.
Cheers
