We have been going to The Broken Banyan each year for the past 22 years. I guess that is a strong recommendation in itself. If you want a "real" Island experience then this is certainly the place to go. Peaceful garden setting for the 6 well-equipped units. Barbara and her dog Charlotte will certainly make you feel both welcome and at home. We love the self-catering as it gives the opportunity to shop locally and really get to live the island life. If you want to sample one of the excellent restaurants on the island Barbara will drive you to the restaurant and the restaurants will see you home again. Great place to stay and our home away from home.

We had an amazing stay at the Broken Banyan – couldn’t ask for much better. We were met by our friendly host, Barbara, at the airport, given a quick town tour and a stop at the grocery store, and then whisked to our lodging up the hill. The location was pretty good, just a short bike ride from the restaurants and grocery stores. Our room, part of the duplex, was a 1 bedroom apartment with veranda. The room was clean and comfortable with plenty of natural light. The kitchenette was functional, with stove, fridge, microwave, toaster, and kettle and we cooked up a number of meals there. We were disappointed that tea and coffee fixings were not provided – still using the tired old Covid excuse which I don’t understand. The Wifi worked well and was our only real contact with the outside world. Lots of wood hens and banded rails running around the place – great entertainment! There is a guest laundry and gas BBQ area on site as well. The best way to get around the island is by bike and they can be rented just down the hill for a reasonable price. One recommendation: book your dinners beforehand. The restaurants are few and not open every night. We missed out one night and ended up having to cook our own food for dinner. Overall we had an amazing stay and would definitely recommend this place to other travellers.

OK, I am a rusted-on Broken Banyan visitor. We have been going for a few weeks annually for the past 20 odd years. Always at The Broken Banyan. From our first visit we liked the lovely 2 acres of gardens and lawns. Barbara treats all guests like family and for us it is like coming home for Christmas. The Broken Banyan is self-catering. We love nothing better than a BBQ in the garden of an evening watching the returning birds overhead. The units are comfortable and very well set-out. One of the big advantages of self catering is you can meet the locals as you gather food for your evening meal. Local produce is easy to come-by including local fish, tomatoes, and occasionally beef to mention a few. There are some killer home-made preserves available too! If you are into restaurants then the island has a good selection and Barbara will drive you to your restaurant of choice each evening. Barbara and the Broken Banyan offer you a "real" island experience. This is not some generic 5-star offering but the real deal Lord Howe. If you like the independence of doing your own "thing" then the Broken Banyan is the place to stay for your authentic Lord Howe experience. Oh, almost forgot - you need at least a week to enjoy the island experience and preferably a few weeks if you have the time.

We spent a week in December 2021 at the Broken Banyan and enjoyed it immensely. As was mentioned in the previous review (Howe Cosy), Barbara is a wonderful host and made our stay special. With only 6x 1 bedroom units on the property, it was delightfully quiet and restful. We loved the arrangement whereby the accommodation places provide transport to restaurants in the evening, a t the restaurants return you to your accommodation after your meal. Make sure you book restaurants ASAP after you arrive, or better still prior to arriving, as they are limited in numbers and keenly sought after. Lord Howe is a stunningly beautiful island, with secluded beaches, great walks, snorkeling and manic scenery. You will not be disappointed!

My group & I recently stayed at the Broken Banyan for our trip to Lord Howe. We absolutely loved it! Nestled away in the forested areas away from the beach, the Banyan offers a tropical paradise to it's guests. You are surrounded by beautiful trees, & birds chirping away. The rooms are spacious & comfortable - with a kitchen area, dining table, large(ish) room & personal bathroom. Barbara, who runs the Banyan, is a great host as well! She is absolutely on it - from managing all the arrival times for guests, taking care of airport departure times & changing flights (we had a few flights delayed / cancelled due to weather) - & she was all over connecting with the airport to ensure we didn't miss our flights. She is so kind & more than happy to help with whatever we needed. She also has the nicest little dog- Charlotte! You won't regret booking this lovely spot & staying with Barbara & Charlotte.

A very basic cabin which is affordable on a quite expensive island and very clean. Do not expect anything special though, after all, you always get what you pay for. This is not a complaint, Barbara is a good host, friendly, looks after you and ensures that you have a clean place but it is a bit dated. There are no extras thrown in, expect to buy everything except salt and pepper. WiFi is limited but available in immediate area of the laundry, some cabins will get the signal but most will not, you will have to walk. Again, this is holiday on a gorgeous island so you should be out an about and this should only be used for must do communication. It is an affordable place to sleep, get out and enjoy the island.

We are fans of these lovely apartments. In our past 17 visits to The Broken Banyan we have at one time or another stayed in every one of the 6 units. If you want a "real" island experience then The Broken Banyan is for you. There are BBQs in the beautiful gardens that we use most nights despite the excellent cooking facilities in the rooms. So peaceful and a great way to drop off the planet for your vacation. The rooms are clean and the beds comfy. You live the island life. Your host Barbara (and her dog Charlotte) treat you more as a member of the family than a guest. This is a place for couples wanting a genuine island experience. My wife and I could not recommend The Broken Banyan more highly for those wanting to engage with the island. You become an islander rather than a tourist. This is not some generic accommodation that could be found any where in a holiday destination but an authentic Lord Howe experience.

Stayed here with the wife for 6 nights in December. I thought it was a very nice quiet location. For an Island that has no reticulated water and all power is provided by generators the place does quite well. There are 6 units which are plenty big enough. The bathroom probably a little on the small side though. If you are Wifi dependant then you may be dissapointed as the speed is slow and patchy. It is adults only so no good if you have kids. The biggest downfall is the hill you have to walk up/cycle up to get to the place. Barabara, the owner, picks you up from the airport and drops you back on departure. Also, she will give you a lift into town or a restaurant for dinner. The restaurant normally takes you back. I would stay again if I went back to the Island.

The Broken Banyan comprises 6 semi detached units with a communal laundry. The units are dated but well maintained. Our unit was clean. The bed was comfortable and everything worked. The owner meets you at the airport and takes you to your accommodation via the bottle shop and grocery store. If you want a quiet holiday surrounded by unspoilt nature, this is the place to go.

We loved staying in this small complex away from the hustle and bustle. So quiet and peaceful. Barbara picked us up from the airport and dropped us back there which was great. The wifi was excellent. Rose the poodle was a sweetie. Barbara lent us beach towels which was great.
