Like many Australians, not being able to travel overseas over the last 12 months (and counting) means that we have been searching for a destination within the country or preferably, with lockdowns, your own state. We had our eye on Lord Howe for some time and finally decided to book six months in advance, fingers crossed that the Covid Gods would be kind and that we could actually go after a hectic year. Well instead, we copped the weather gods, that huge deluge of rain we have just all had, but managed to get out of Sydney and land on Lord Howe's tiny runway even though the winds were extremely high. The lovely Michele was there to greet us and we had a short drive to Arajilla, complete with an escort of White Terns and Welcome Swallows. We were greeted with a cocktail and a delicious snack and everything explained to us. We are an active couple and wanted to spend our days hiking, biking, bird watching and of course snorkelling. My husband also was keen to surf. (Yes, there are good breaks on both sides of the island). Sadly, the high winds and then the rain made fools of our plans- we will have to go out to Balls Pyramid and do certain places for snorkelling next visit- but the experience at Arajilla helped make up for it. The suites are simple and elegant and have everything you need including an espresso coffee maker and teas. Our room had a wire-enclosed verandah area which led to huge Banyan trees where happily, we saw lots of the Wood Hens that are such a conservation success. From our back door, it was literally a 30 second walk to Old Settlement Beach, which ended up being our favourite amongst the many lovely beaches on the island. Even though the weather wasn't conducive most days, going for a run with no one there at 7am or looking for turtles on high tide (yes, we saw many) was a highlight. Most people get around on bikes and there were free mountain bikes and helmets at Arajilla. Also, you didnt have to bring snorkel and fins as they were also included. This is an all-inclusive place food wise and normally that sends shivers up my spine, but the food was a highlight! Fresh and delicious and dinners in particular often had an Asian influence which we really liked. We are vegetarian/pescatarian and had plenty to enjoy. There was an option to have an esky full of fish to BBQ dropped at any one of the many picnic places on that side of the island so you could spend say a morning hiking, come back down the hill to the beach and there waiting at the picnic BBQ place was your esky with food ready to cook. Genius really. There is also a cocktail hour each evening before dinner which we sometimes joined and at the times we did, the canapes and cocktails were very good. On the worst weather day we both booked treatments at the spa, and really enjoyed being pampered by Deb in the yurt. A beautiful experience with the wind blowing and the sound of rain through the palms. Best of all though was the kind and attentive service by the team at Arajilla. Informal but respectful, friendly but not pushy- the best kind of low key luxe. Big thanks to Michele, Taighen, Olivia,Dave, Diesel and of course the kitchen team, and the amazing Jolin who did our bookings for us. Any negatives? A few past reviewers mentioned that Arajilla could get noisy. Going there for a week I couldn't work out why as it's on the quiet end of the island. But then we understood on our last two nights. Yes, we had noisy neighbours and the suites are close to each other. If you were close to the restaurant (we were not) I would suppose you would also hear people talking etc. So if you like quiet, choose a suite away from the lodge area but I guess there isn't much you can do about people with very loud voices next to you- yet it is a concern. Also I would suggest more portable lunch options for vegetarians. If we return to Lord Howe, we would certainly stay here again without a doubt.

Great transfer by Kathy to our next resort – a Kentia Suite at the Arajilla where we had a lovely welcome with a very good cup of coffee and chia and fruit as we waited for our Suite to be completed for our stay. Our rooms were light and spacious (loved the Velux ceiling window with remote-controlled blind 😊) with a very comfortable bed, ‘tucked away’ tea and coffee making facility and good-sized wardrobe. Small step down to the lounge area with comfy couch although the glass-topped table was a slight ‘hazard’ as we had to remember that the glass wasn’t actually attached to the legs! A slightly larger table would be more practical 😊. TV that was easy to control and patio doors out to a private deck with bench, table and side chair. Perfect for a couple for our four-night stay. There are paths within the complex for a back way to Old Settlement Beach and easy parking by our suite for our included bikes and helmets. We also used the included snorkelling equipment and beach towels for a float around in the water of Old Settlement Beach. Our package included breakfast, lunch, pre-dinner cocktails and canapes and a three-course dinner each day and the food, and service, were all definitely 5*. The day started with a cup of tea in our room with very tasty home-baked cookies and breakfast was amazing with a little fruit, muffin and croissant plate, and couldn’t go past the smoked kingfish ceviche with a soft boiled egg, torn bread. May sound odd but so delicious!! 😊 For lunch and dinner there was always an option for me, a Pescatarian, and wines and beers are also included for cocktail hour and dinner and there is a good selection. Two days we took a picnic lunch with us (smoked salmon wrap and cheese and ham sandwich) which was great. For our final lunch before leaving for the airport, we enjoyed a delicious bbq lunch of prawns, fish, salad, bread and accompaniments. Sooo yummy We both had a Abhyanga massage in the Day Spa with the lovely Deb and they were wonderful and in such a fabulous Yurt in the grounds. Our special thanks go to the whole team looking after us, and our suite, during our stay including Michelle, Jana, Taighan, Olivia, Dave and many more. Fabulous location and our whole stay was fabulous and very highly recommended.

Disappointed with Arajilla as a whole. For the money it was a little too rustic for my liking.some on going maintenance would not go astray. The provided bikes needed some maintenance to keep in tip top condition. The beach umbrellas were cheap and nasty. There was more wild life inside our apartment than on the outside. And because of the daily menu provided I never want to eat king fish ever again.

Loved the island a real surprise. Having travelled widely to discover this gem on our doorstep was wonderful. Arajilla is well located, close to town, the jetty and the ‘Turtle Beach’ The rooms are nestled in a natural rainforest setting. We spent 4 nights in a Banyan suite and 6 in an Arajilla suite. The Arajilla suite was amazing and extremely private and quiet. The restaurant was excellent, the food, especially dinner was superb and the service was friendly, helpful and efficient. Lord Howe is a relatively expensive destination and we thought that Arajilla was good value.

Wow - an amazing place to relax and use as a base to explore Lord Howe. Great rooms - well fitted out and comfortable, fabulous staff that spend their days keeping you feed, watered and helping you enjoy the island, and great food (breakfast, lunch and dinner). Start the day with a hearty breakfast, take a packed lunch, have a BBQ delivered to your chosen location, or head back to the resort for lunch and then the 5:30 canapés and cocktail of the day are a perfect way to end the day and get you ready for the 3 course dinner that follows. Located close to Old Settlement Beach and a 5 minute walk to town, 15 minutes to Neds - it's a perfect place to be and relax! Thanks to the team for a fabulous week.
