I was looking for something between the very expensive top end luxury resorts and what looked like 'low' budget backpacker accommodation (though nothing is low budget on Lord Howe Island!) It's a bit hard when you can only see a few photos online but Pandanus looked like it fitted the bill so I booked. Whilst not unbearable, the cabins were definitely a bit run down and in need of some maintenance (for example, the windows rattled quite badly, the bathroom door handle was hard to open, the outdoor furniture looked old). The bathroom in particular could do with renovation. The bedrooms were quite basic in furniture but the beds were large and comfortable, the kitchen lacked an oven but was reasonably well kitted out otherwise especially if you were happy to cook outside on the barbecue. The gardens were lovely and there was a large bike rack. Be aware that Pandanus is up a hill. There is a short but steep walk up from the musuem and grocery shop in one direction and a longer but more gradual hill from the village in the other direction. If you walk down to the village it will take 10-15 minutes, quicker by bike. The owner Liz will drop you off at any of the restaurants in the evening if you let her know in advance and the restaurants will drop you back home afterwards. Bearing in mind the fact that everything is expensive, I still feel Pandanus was overpriced and we would have been better off opting for somewhere a little closer to the village and probably cheaper too. Having said that Lord Howe is absolutely stunning and I am so glad we did the trip, it has to be one of the most beautiful destinations in Australia, if not the world

Pandanus apartments are set in a beautiful garden but the apartments have really seen better days. Liz, our host, was fantastic - friendly and helpful but the apartment facilities really need to be updated. Also, this property is located "up the hill", so you need to be prepared to walk to most attractions and shops during the day. In the evening, Liz offers transport to any of the restaurants on the island (and the restaurants offer return transfer) but during the day it can be a strenuous walk depending on your fitness. Bikes are available to get around, but you need to be pretty fit to ride up either of the hills to Pandanus (we walked the bikes up).

Stayed over xmas so paid $715 p/n for 2 bed, not much less than arajila would have cost and we would have got 3 meals a day included at arajila. Rooms very basic, bathroom dated, 70's era, bed very hard. Back deck furniture in good need of cleaning, both deck floors in good need of cleaning. No aircon or wifi in room. Only 1 bathroom for 2 bed. Not a bad location. Well worth hiring bikes whilst there. On site restaurant is pretty good, all food options are pretty good. Overall thought it was overpriced and in need of an update.

The self contained unit had everything we needed. Very spacious and the front deck has a wonderful view to the garden. Liz was so good! She was always there with all the answers and tips, so so helpful. She even takes you to all your shops on arrival to get whatever you need. We enjoyed our stay a lot

Located in a beautiful garden surrounded by palm trees and hibiscus, Pandanus Apartments are a great place to stay. The bungalow was very neat and clean and included comfy beds, a fridge and an outdoor BBQ. The private outdoor area was lovely and the perfect place to have breakfast and spend some quiet time. I stayed there a week and could have picture myself staying a month! I highly recommend it.

4 of us dined at Pandanus one night, 3 ordering a great pasta dish filled with prawns, cherry tomatoes and olives. The other meal ordered was a "bouillabaisse" [supposedly!] - it contained 1 mussel, 1 prawn, 1 minute piece of fish and a bit of a scallop in about 1cm of a sauce. Thinking a mistake had been made and it was only an entree size, we queried the waitress who confirmed, via the cook, that it was in fact a main!! Absolutely pathetic. If you want a proper bouillabaisse, suggest you dine at Beachcomber on a Tuesday night.

Clean and comfortable accommodation with kitchen and a BBQ, we took our own breakfast, but didn't cook our own meals, adequate kitchen accessories. Nice bathroom supplies and the beds were comfortable - the annoying thing was having a skylight overhead so it was quite light and we also thought that (for the price) there should've been more servicing of the apartment, i.e. making beds, sorting rubbish - all which we had to do ourselves. You have to pay for laundering clothes, which should be included in the price - coin operated machine. The restaurant was one of the best on the island, but you must book to ensure you get a table and a shuttle service was also available to drop you off at other restaurants - you just had to write your request down on a board. If you have an iPad don't expect internet service, I was unable to get it here - even though I tried. Would stay somewhere else if I returned.

There are quite a few choices when it comes to accommodation on Lord Howe Island. There is of course your top of the range extremely expensive Capella and Arajilla. Pine Trees with an all inclusive meal plan available and then a large choice of cheaper self catering style accommodation. The self catering options are all quite similar and it really comes down to location. There are a couple located right near the "main street" so on the flat and close to beaches and restaurants. The rest are spread right across the island. We chose Pandanus and for us it was the perfect choice. It is located a little way from the main street however we enjoyed the short bike ride to beaches, shops and restaurants the ride back up the hill is really not that hard. Liz the Manager picked us up from the airport and she could not have been more helpful. Our drive to Pandanus included a quick tour around the island pointing out the location of restaurants, bike hire, BBQs and shops. Liz then drove up to Joys Shop to pick up any food we needed then drove us to bike hire. Each night LIz would also drop up at whatever restaurant we were dining at which was fabulous. Pandanus was very comfortable and spacious for my daughter and I. Kitchen had everything we needed to prepare breakfast and lunch. The only dinner we cooked was a BBQ which was so easy as the Top Shop delivered our BBQ pack to our room with salad prepared with our choice of dressing, onions sliced and the most delicious meat. There are also seafood packs you can have delivered fresh to your room each day. The weather was not great while we were there. More sun than rain but lots of afternoons spent reading and watching movies so we were grateful for the spacious, modern lounge area and the great balcony when the sun was shining. Another bonus is of course having the Pandanus restuarant which is owned separately on site and one of the few restaurants on the island that is open 7 days a week. Get your name down early as it does book out quickly. Menu is quite small and the specials board did not seem to change much the 7 days we were there however the food is really good. Pandanus is a short bike ride from many walks, Neds Beach and shops. The only thing we missed was not being closer to beach to watch sunsets as you can't ride bikes at night as there is no lighting. We were very happy we chose Pandanus and would highly recommend. The kitchen and bathroom are a little old but is is freshly painted and beautifully furnished. The island is breathtakingly beautiful. I had seen lots of photos of course but was still amazed at the color of the water, the whiteness of the sand and the stunning scenery. We loved the fact there were no room keys and many places use honesty system where you can hire beach chairs, wet suits etc and simply leave the money in the box. Having no mobile phone reception is actually a good thing. There are plenty of pay phones around the island if you do need to make a phone call but great to switch of for a while and not constantly check that phone. WiFi is very hit and miss. You need to be near restaurant to get signal at Pandanus and still only works when it feels like it and messages etc very slow to load and forget about using Facebook which once again is a good thing. The Museum do have an internet cafe if you really need a fast connection. Every meal we ate on the island was good. Very generous servings at places like Golf Club, Beach House on the Moon and Bowling club. Most places only open a few nights a week so be sure to check and put your name down as seating is very limited. Loved The Anchorage for our daily coffee fix. Fantastic bakery too with fresh bread daily, amazing muffins and really tasty salad rolls. All in all a great getaway - just takes a few days to get orientated and work out just how things are done on the island. We loved our stay and Pandanus and would highly recommend to couples or families.

My husband and I have just spent 6 nights on LHI staying in Apartment 4 at Pandanus. I chose this accommodation as we wanted something self contained and I liked the pictures on the net. This was a 1 bedroom apartment but was incredibly spacious. It was an older style but I knew that from the pictures and reviews. Even though it was old it was freshly painted and lovely and light with nice tasteful furniture. The bed was huge as it was a twin together. It was a little hard for us but that was not the end of the world. The kitchen had everything we needed and as we didn't cook any dinners I can't comment on the barbecue on the very spacious balcony. There was plenty of seating inside and out. A small tv was included and an assortment of dvd's and books. We had a mixed bag of weather and when it poured all day were very happy laying around inside reading and watching a movie. Both the owner Michael and the Manager Liz were extremely hospitable and helpful. If you want 5 star luxury then don't stay here but if you want to be warm and comfortable in nice surroundings with a lovely private outlook onto the gardens you will be most happy. Even more so when you step out of your room and walk across the garden to eat in arguably the best little restaurant on the island. We will be back!

Good clean basic accomodation, with basic kitchen facilities, a little tired but nice surrounds, has a restaurant on site but must book. Love that you don't get room keys as you don't need to lock anything!!! Like a step back in time......we hired bicycles and would recommend this as all things Lord Howe involve walking or riding......Older people should be aware that there is a whole lot of walking and alot is uphill!!! Panadanus is located on the hill so be aware that it is a steep walk home.....for dinner all accomodation provide transport to restaurants then restaurant will drive you back......we love our week on Lord Howe as a winter getaway
