Great location at the rear of a nice pub. Very quiet rooms which overlook large playing fields. The pub has a restaurant and there are really nice breakfast and coffee restaurants located across the road.
The rooms which have been renovated are large with very spacious bathrooms.
The only drawback is there is no lift and rooms are on the first or second floor. Also be careful driving down the narrow driveway to the rooms.
The staff were accommodating and we had a very comfortable stay and would recommend this premises.
We have dined at the Crown Hotel a great number of times over the years and it has always provided good food at a reasonable price. The wait staff were always polite and attentive but recently that has all changed.
We had lunch with friends towards the end of last year and the meal was a little below the usual standard we have come to expect and the staff seemed just a little pre occupied. Also the change to having to order your meals at a separate counter rather than with a staff member was new. To say we were not overly impressed with that visit would sum it up but we thought, as one usually does, that it could just be a one off or a bad day so we let it slide.
We went again yesterday with friends and have now concluded that it was not a one off. The wait staff were best described as disinterested and some of the meals totally disgusting. Two of our party had steak ordering one rare and one medium rare. Both were dry and overcooked. Each was tough and full of gristle but that was not the worst. Two friends ordered the lobster with béarnaise sauce which when presented was dry, over cooked and totally lacking in lobster. Both appeared to have been prepared and cooked as lobster with garlic butter and then reheated and served with a side dish of sauce. Which is probably why they were dried out and tough. We sent them back. When the replacements came, after everyone else at the table had finished their meals, they were not really any better. There was less garlic butter and again the side dish of sauce but again there was barely any lobster in the shell. What there was was again dry, over cooked and very tough. Ordinary cutlery was useless on this disgusting excuse for a meal, in fact I doubt a steak knife would have helped. We could not be bothered sending it back and ordering again as time was marching on so my friends did their best.
Since getting all our meals had taken so long the kitchen closed before we were finished. The kitchen and wait staff just packed up, switched off the lights and went home without even bothering to ask if we wanted dessert or coffee. They even left dirty plates on our table in their haste to go home.
In a nutshell this venue has gone to the dogs. The meals are now rubbish and the staff couldn’t give a damn. There is no customer service and I am guessing that the meals (at least in the case of the lobster) are cooked before hand and then re heated. This would explain why everything seemed dry, overcooked and tough.
It now comes as no surprise that the Camden Valley Inn seems to be the more popular venue so in future we will be going there.
This was their response.
I’m sorry that we did not meet your expectations once again and that we are no longer your venue of choice. We wish you well.
So we were not allowed to go into the bar of the hotel we'd paid 60pndolkars to stay in!
Avoid it like the plague, they clearly prioritise teen drunks over calm paying customers!!
The gentleman staring at 2 young ladies and making them very uncomfortable.
Garlic Bread. I asked if they made this fresh, the answer was yes. I said I do not like pre-packaged/frozen galric bread. I was assured it was made fresh. $9 and did not even taste like garlic.
We asked if the seafood was fresh. The answer was yes. It is frozen. Very disapointing and tasteless.
The $18 New York Steak special. If you're going to advertise a specific cut. Maybe sell that. I would not have ordered this.
Will I return? NO. This was a one and done for me.
1.My infant son spilled juice on his sheet so we had to use one from the motel. He woke up with bites all around his head and neck. Bedbugs? I have no idea. I am pretty horrified and ashing all our clothes in biolong hot water as we speak..
2. The carpet in our room was FILTHY.. My sons knees feet and hands were LITERALLY BLACK after crawling around on this floor for fifteen minutes!!! Do not let your children play on the floor or even walk barefoot!!! I can assume that the other rooms' carpets are in a similar state. It's obviously been years since they were steam cleaned.
3. This is not a child friendly hotel. There are no facilities for children inside the hotel or in the rooms.
4. The staff were a little brusk at times, some looking to be quite rude if not distinctly cold toward members of our party.
All in all, a below average experience. I would pass on the Camden Crown Hotel and visit another establishment.
