This hotel proves hard to review on a simple rating. The room itself - a family room - was spacious and comfortable. Plenty of room for all four of us though the room was starting to feel a bit dated. The rest of the hotel lets the team down a little on what you'd expect for the prices they charge. Breakfast was passable. Looking out into the carpark was disappointing for an area so resonant with natural beauty as Bowral. Service was struggling - indifference on checkin and a 30 minute wait to checkout with people queued out the door with only a single person at the counter. I can't say we'd be rushing to head back. Maybe it's better for a couples getaway paying a premium for spa, etc, but as a family and general experience I'm sure we can get better value for money elsewhere.

The hotel room was great, it had a comfortable bed and a good spacious bathroom. It’s fairly contemporary, in contrast to some of the other accommodation in the Southern Highlands which is more old fashioned. Unfortunately our stay was marred by the hotel deciding on the day we checked in that they’d close their food and drink facilities “because there are a few cases of Covid in Bowral”. So rather than enjoying dinner in the hotel as we had booked, we ended up with a pub meal in one of the few places open in Bowral; and rather than a nice breakfast in the restaurant, they gave us some fruit salad in a box to have with instant coffee in our room. Not at all a 5 star experience, sadly.

What a surprise in this accommodation, it was peaceful, the room was exactly as written in it's review. The restaurant was closed due to Covid19, however they did give us a small hamper each and directed us where to find coffee, tea and hot chocolate. The pool/fitness centre was clean and easy access for people with disabilities

Booked in 2 rooms for six nights for the week after New Year… paid a little extra for a supposedly nice hotel with two onsite restaurants, and bar / lounge facilities in order to have a relaxing break! The hotel phoned the day before arrival to confirm our stay & asked if we also wanted to book for dinner … no worries if we wanted to wait until arrival to book the restaurant. All seemed good! All guests needed to be fully vaxxed and wear masks in the common areas… which we were also very happy about. However, when we arrived we were told they had just made the decision to close all restaurant and bar service until further notice… they could do a boxed breakfast if needed but other than that it was tend to yourselves! We decided to still stay as we could always go into Bowral (not far) for cafes & restaurants etc. Turns out, however, there is also no other seating area to relax anywhere in the hotel other than the now closed bar lounge area (they even padlocked off that part of the hotel)… so essentially you were confined to your rooms whenever in the hotel. Day two, all otherwise seemed fine. Day three… rooms weren’t made up, no fresh towels, or toiletries being replenished etc. Asked reception what was going on… they said they had now decided to also cancel all housekeeping services(!!) but you could get fresh towels/ toiletries from reception as needed!! NO COMMUNICATION was planned to current guests; they were mentioning to new guests as they checked in, but just waiting for current guests to come to reception to complain before even informing them!! To their credit, when I asked why I was still being charged full hotel rates, they offered to reduce the nightly rate by $50 per room, and would give a full refund on any unused nights if we decided to check out early (we had already pre-paid our rooms)! When questioned as to why they had cancelled housekeeping… e.g. if there were staffing issues… they constantly said no, all measures were just for the Covid safety of guests… but when talking to locals and restaurateurs in Bowral, we were told there was definitely a big shortage of staff everywhere in the area! I have no problem with a business needing to scale back if they have staffing issues, but to say this is purely for guest safety due to Covid is a convenient cop-out! If they were so concerned, why were they still even taking new bookings? If Covid was affecting availability of staff to work, they should also say so! BIGGEST ISSUE: the need to COMMUNICATE with their guests!! They could easily have put a message on the guest TV’s, left a ‘please contact reception’ flag on the phones, and/ or slid a note under guest doors… all of which are standard methods used by hotels world-wide! I’m sure this is usually a very pleasant hotel, but it’s how a business performs under adversity, and manages such issues for their customers, that makes or breaks a business! On the back of this poorly managed performance I won’t be back nor recommend this hotel to others!

The Gibraltar is in a lovely location but it is indeed really only a 3 star hotel at best. The service is clunky, the food average and the rooms reminiscent of a travel lodge. When you have dinner in the main restaurant on Saturday night and the waiter informs you after desert "Sorry, we don't serve coffee," that pretty much sums it up. "We don't serve coffee"!! Quite unbelievable. I don't recommend the Gibraltar.
