Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We'll definitely be back! Mt Hay was so relaxing and tranquil, set on an amazing well kept property, with views of the sea and country side. Can't beat it!! The room was very comfortable and clean with everything we needed. Lovely touches with bathrobe, slippers, bag, bowl of fresh fruit, milk and take home travel water bottles. Pool and spa is superb. We enjoyed the weekend by going bushwalking, swimming and travelling to the local town for meals. The local pubs are great too, with a live band Sunday afternoon.

Very spacious suites. We stayed in the Escarpment room with a very large two person bath. The views from the windows and the little patio were superb. It has a coffee maker, but just a small microwave, which is enough for most uses, but good to know. It's only a 10 minute drive up the hill from Berry but, if you're not used to narrow, dark country roads, plan to bring food for dinner and breakfast, rather than driving into Berry for meals. A fruit bowl and a little milk are provided. The 33 metre heated pool and jacuzzi were great and don't forget to try the waterfall function. Also, have a go on the sky swing - lots of fun. Even though there are six suites we only saw another couple once.

The most wonderful 3 night weekend. From arrival to our late checkout everything was seamless. We were met by host Anthony upon arrival who showed us to our suite. After that we were in total peace and privacy with any requests just a text message away. The escarpment suite was wonderful, spacious, beautifully appointed and perfect for a luxury weekend away. The view over the valley and out to the ocean is marvellous and surrounded by the gorgeous gardens of the retreat. The double bath, heated bathroom floor and massive triple head shower were truly delightful. The kitchenette is small but planning ahead ensured we packed enough food drink to limit our need to leave the retreat. A quick walk across the main path gets you to the swimming pool/spa which we had to ourselves in the evening. Overall Mt Hay Retreat was exactly what we were after and truly lived up to the expectation and even exceeded them. We had quick chat with owners Louise and Anthony before we left ensuring them we will return.

We paid $456 per night for two nights and while not exactly disappointed, we expected more for this amount of money. The retreat offers adult accommodation in the form of villas that include a bathroom, king bed/ lounge area (very spacious) and kitchenette (microwave, toaster, kettle, some plates, cutlery but no stove). The verandah offers amazing views over the shoalhaven, right up and down the coast and includes a bath, which seems romantic - but there’s no heater and no privacy- as the path around the retreat goes right in the front of the verandah. It’s a shame as there’s no bath in the actual bathroom. The shower (inside) is fabulous with great water pressure and separately controlled handheld and rain heads. The retreat is at the top of Mt Hay near Berry, they should mention in their advertising that it is at the end of a 2.5k winding, single lane (or less) very steep road that is heavily potholed and a difficult drive at best, and dangerous at worst. At the end, parking on a okay if there are no other cars but as soon as there are, getting out is a 15 point turn nightmare. And we have a hatchback. Remember how there’s no stove? There’s also no meal service, so you need to drive up and down the trail of doom to and from Berry if you want a proper hot breakfast or dinner. They do sell (for more money) a breakfast hamper, cheese platter and alcohol. The bed was very comfy as was the lounge, the villa was clean and well kept. Use of several streaming services was appreciated. However, the villa is not serviced, so while I’d expected to come back up the doom trail after lunch in Berry to find a lovely clean room what I found was the room exactly the same as when we left. This is also not mentioned when booking. Fir that price I expect daily service. There is a nice indoor pool and spa, we didn’t use it but it looked good. Giant chess was fun, and the adult sized swing was ok but situated right near an occupied house (maybe the owners?) which limited our enjoyment of it. Verdict? Very overpriced but we enjoyed the views.

Hello 851Debl, Thank you for taking the time to give us some feedback. Our rates vary across the week and depending, a little, on seasonality. We are disappointed that you didn't feel your stay was good value for money. We work hard to ensure all our guests feel welcomed and looked after and always strive to ensure they have a truly lovely, relaxing stay. As mentioned in our welcome note in your suite, our standard practice (following Covid 19 and ongoing flu concerns) is that we will only enter your suite, upon request. If guests wish for their suite to be refreshed, they only need to let us know and we will happily do so. Otherwise, we leave you to enjoy your stay in peace and privacy. As we are a small retreat (only a handful of suites) we are unable to offer a restaurant facility on site. We do offer a range of snacks for guests on arrival (by request) and, in advance of guest stays provide recommendations both for restaurants, the local taxi service (should guests not wish to drive) and details of some fabulous establishments that offer 'take home' meal options should guests not wish to venture out. We are on a small private road that, like many roads, have a few potholes. This is noted to guests before arrival and regular maintenance is undertaken to ensure visitor safety and comfort. Any normal 2 wheel drive vehicle can easily drive the road with a little caution. We are disappointed that your stay didn’t live up to your expectations and hope that you might consider staying with us again and allowing us the opportunity to make your next stay, even more special.
