Older style motel / hotel. Very good value. Safe and quiet. Close to main street and just behind Ramada. Can walk easily to view sunset over Richmond River. $10 Steaks and other good meals in hotel. Friendly staff and management. Large quiet rooms either on ground
level or 1 floor up. Very clean.

Great staff. Clean, good rooms with lots of room. Rooms have been renovated, bathrooms; not so much, but doable. Cheap and Cheerful. Would stay here again if I ever have to come back to Kempsey. Not sure there is much more I can say.

There are $10 meals here which are very good value. The staff are friendly and the location is excellent.
This is a very popular local pub for workers and locals alike and can get busy on Friday and Sat nights so get in early and have a beer before dinner.

We didn't stay at the hotel, but their lunches are delicious. My husband was more than happy with his $10 rump steak meal, while I just loved my haloumi burger. It was so filling and delicious I forfeited the lovely toasted bun and seasoned chips to make sure I had room for the rest. Tasty!!

Absolutely the last resort for accommodation
Rooms are “bleach clean” sheets clean, bathroom tiny, outlook is to a car park, no microwave, jug was not useable due to foreign matter inside it, pillows were wafer thin.
The whole place has seen much better days.
The Pub served decent food at a great price, staff were pleasant but would never stay in the room again

I dont know how this place rated more than a 2 star. I know Ballina is under accommodation pressure due to many workmen repairing after the flooding, but this is about a $70 room with a $140 price tag. On arrival noted the smallest pillow I have ever had. Had to get more. They talk about free parking, but all the pub patrons seem to park there, so the motel has very little if any. Rooms badly need a renovation. It would seem that they got some small flooding and just cleaned up and kept going. Needs painting badly and renovating. No microwave or toaster. One good thing is that it is centrally located. Shower hot water took at least 5-10 minutes to get hot. At one stage I was going to ask if we could shower somewhere else and then it came good.

Room was clean and bed comfortable, so if you are happy with that then forget the rest I guess. Plenty of other accommodation around, but be prepared to pay a lot more.

It all started when we walked in and the cook referred to us as “walking ATM’s”.
Didn’t get any better. Beer was off, replaced with an on tap beer.
Sitting at a table with small children, had to listen to the vulgarity from the kitchen staff.
Witnessed kitchen staff wiping their nose then touching food. Needless to say, the “walking ATM” and party of 9 walked away.
Really disappointing for tourists with family in the area to be treated with such disdain. Sad news for this establishment is we spent 100’s of dollars elsewhere over the next 2 nights.
Good thing this “walking ATM” has legs.

I often go to the Slipway for lunch with family & friends, however, not anymore.
Today was the third time that I have ordered the steak & chips for lunch asking for the steak to be cooked medium to well done, leaning more to well done. Each time the steak has been rare. When I return it the cook puts it back on the grill (with the gravy still on it). Today I, politely, refused to accept it. I asked for the manager & was told he wasn't on the premises. I wrote out a complaint, for the manager & surprise some man took it straight to the cook & had a good laugh over it. I wasn't even offered my money back. Absolutely disappointed in the lack of professionalism at the Slipway. Shame on them. Would not recommend.

We booked this hotel at the last minute on Booking.com because my husband decided to go to the Byron Bay Markets on the Sunday. Everything was booked up in most accommodations because it is the first week of January and many are on holiday. So I looked up a few reviews regarding this hotel and some did not sound too bad, so I thought for a night's stay it should be ok. I first booked the wrong date so I tried to change it to the next night on Booking.com but they did not give the option to change the date and it was non refundable. So I called the hotel itself and the guy was nice enough to change the date. Ok, well that was practically the only nice part. I wondered at what he said next, that we needed to pick up the key to the room at the Bar. Well, that is exactly what we had to do and so I had to walk into a pretty seedy looking place where I was ogled by a few ewww! characters and then there were lots of people standing across from the bar completely engrossed in a horse race on the TV screen and there was gambling in that area as well. So that was not something that I enjoyed since we are not a bar or gambling sort of people. So we picked up the key and then proceeded to drive to the back of the 'Pub', 'hotel', where the motel section was. There is two levels and our room was on the second floor. The room was 'basic' to the last degree. There were no pictures on the wall, not one, and the bedspread was a dark 'brown' including the chairs in the room. So the 'ambiance' was completely missing as you can imagine! It was a very hot day and the air conditioner was not adequate to cool down the room so needless to say,we did not sleep well and we tossed and turned all night. The motel is also very dated and can use some needed renovations. Despite all the missing 'atmosphere', we paid 1 dollar short of $150. for the night! The only plus was that it seemed adequately clean and the TV worked well. We had come back after dinner and took a shower and changed into our night gear, and then I tried to connect to the 'FREE' WiFi. Then a page came up to say that we needed to enter a user name and password which they had not provided when we checked in. There was no phone in the room so I called the main number on my cell phone and the man then informed me that we would have to 'come to the bar' to get the user name and password! Oh My Goodness! Like we were going to go into that seedy bar again that late in the evening to get this! No thank you! So no WiFi. We checked out very early as you can imagine. All in all it was a depressing and somewhat demeaning experience. I wish I could say something more positive. They need to treat guests will a little more respect and dignity. It is as if they only cater to a lower class of people. If this is the case, then they should charge a much lesser fee for a nights stay.

I stayed in ballina due to high prices in Byron, but should have stayed somewhere else as this place was both worn and in a dodgy street. You check in through a bar and the wifi is horrible. The lights in the rooms does not make a nice atmosphere and I actually don't think the owners have put much effort into this place. Ok for a night, close to central ballina, but that's it.
