Detailed Reviews
The ability of the Australian bush to regenerate is amazing. i have just completed a wonderful 3 day horse riding trek with Reynella rides and was amazed at the regrowth now that rain has fallen. The country is looking magnificent despite the recent fires and severely burnt areas are interspersed with lightly burnt or non burnt areas. The wildflowers are coming out and, due to less undergrowth, the kangaroos and wallabies are easily visible and there were many more birds evident than on previous treks with their songs ringing through the forest . A beautiful copperhead snake was unfazed by the riders and went on his meandering way and huge numbers of moths and other insects were everywhere.
As usual Reynella Rides provided fabulous horses, brilliant food and extremely comfortable tents for sleeping out as well as a wonderful riding itinerary.
This family business which has been operating for over 40 years deserves to be wider known. It is a privilege to be able to accompany them into the high country and to experience Kosciuszko National Park at a personal level. Non-risers are carefully matched with quiet horses and for the experienced riders there are wonderful horses to choose from.

In this amazingly beautiful experience which my family and I have enjoyed so very dearly, it was what we were expecting and thought it would be, however it was so much more. All of the camp leaders were excellent and the best instructors I could have ever asked for, and you can tell because I have never ridden in my life before this and now I can trot, canter and control a horse instead of it controlling me. The food was cooked by frank who was so good that all of us were begging for his recipes. There were 18 of us in our group which was a bit big however we worked our way around it and everyone ended up being friends in the end. Every single one of the horses that was there was beautiful, safe and friendly. The only time they acted up was when some of the riders were being silly and doing things to them that they shouldn’t be. The owner of the place, John is a lovely old man who knows everything about horses that there is to know and I found that when he was on the ride, that it turned out to be much more fun. All in all Renella rides was a life changing experience for everyone in the group and we will never forget it. It was so much fun for all of us and I was so very much thankful for going on it.

Reynella rides is something very special. Its such an Australian experience with all the adventure you could wish for. This was my second ride, having done it circa 25 years prior. I wanted my family to experience this part of the world and this down to earth team and family that is Reynella. We were not disappointed and and it exceeded all of our expectations 10 fold. The team, the food, the horses, the friendships made were perfect. Thank you Reynella

Solid horses, great leaders, 3 meals a day cooked by the talented Frank, great camping grounds , long days with stupendous scenery. Ive done the 5/6 day safari twice now, however this was several years ago but its the same setup now except for the first night.

We took the 3 day 4 night guided ride into the Kosciusko National Park. John Rudd and his expert and friendly guides Kim and Brad led us into beautiful mountain scenery. We stopped for lunch each day near a clear mountain stream and boiled the billy on an open fire. The horses were well trained and I felt safe as an inexperienced rider. The food at the campsite was cooked over the open fire and was tasty. Roslyn, John's wife, was very friendly and looked after us at the homestead. The food at the homestead was hearty and delicious - just what we needed before and after the ride.

If you're reading this review it's probably because you're questioning whether to do a horse trek through the Snowy Mountains. I don't hesitate in recommending the Reynella team. They treated us to excellent hospitality and comfort as we experienced the alpine terrain of the Kosciusko National Park on horseback. We've just returned from a 5 day/6 night ride and it was absolutely spectacular in every way. I organized a family/friends trip and 17 of us signed up. We were picked up at Canberra airport and bused to the homestead where we were met by John and Roz. We had a delicious 3 course dinner cooked by Frank the Irish chef (local smoked trout pate on sourdough toast, a superbly cooked rare beef roast dinner and a zesty lemon de creme dessert) We met our lovely and capable guides Louise and Mhairi. The following morning we were bused to the yards to meet our horses and were matched very well to the ones that suited our ability. In our group we had a few beginners, lots of intermediate riders and several advanced riders. The horses are honest, extremely sure footed and hardy. They bite and kick at each other as horses do and John reminded us that there is no such thing as a quiet horse, but we had no issues once we realized their pecking order. We set off on our first ride aiming for camp. We were encouraged to take our horses off the track so that we could get to know them and put them through their paces. They all responded eagerly and aimed to please. The beginner riders happily stayed on track in a line with their ponies plodding steadily.
We arrived at camp to find a rustic but very well set up camping ground complete with horse yards and a roaring fire which was well appreciated. Frank has a caravan which helps him prepare the meals but he cooks skillfully on an open fire. It's not your normal camping food though - it's 5 star! Breakfasts were a hearty serve of creamy porridge with optional toppings and cereals, bacon, eggs, sausages, sometimes homemade hash browns. Lunches were taken on the packhorses (Coco and Clyde) and Louise found us beautiful lunch stops by creeks where we relaxed and rested. The guides built us a campfire and made us billy tea with sandwich wraps, salad and generous servings of cold meat. The highlight after lunch each day was Roz's delicious fruit cake. We were greeted at the end of each day with freshly cut fruit, a generous cheese and meat platter and cold drinks back at camp. Soup helped us thaw out from a cold day riding in the alps (Thai pumpkin, chicken and noodle, minestrone) Dinners were battered fish with salad and boiled potatoes. Steak with mushroom sauce, broccolini, asparagus, snow peas and mashed potato. Chicken stirfry with greens and steamed jasmine rice. And the best Irish stew I've ever tasted. Each night we also had dessert. Too good to mention, you'll have to go to find out. Frank is a gentleman, nothing is too much trouble.
The rides were fantastic, we traversed the mountains - some of the steepest, wildest country I've ridden in. The horses were faithful and trustworthy, they brake on the mountain descents making the steep terrain very comfortable and they give everything to take you high up onto the rocky mountains to survey the panoramic views. They are fit, hardly breaking a sweat, and solid. I had complete confidence in my mare - Brook. She didn't put a foot wrong yet had personality and endless 'go' in her. Always up for a canter, ears pricked ready for the nod. We saw loads of wild brumbies on the plains, foals at the heel - a sight I'll never forget. One young colt inquisitively came fairly close for a look but we never felt in danger or threatened as Louise has great knowledge of the mountains and explained their behavior and ways to us. We got great photos. It truly is spectacular country.
You need good general fitness as you're in the saddle for long periods - most days we averaged 6 hours in the saddle, one was over 7 hours at our request. I was only sore for the first couple days, then I was fine. Take a sheepskin pad for extra comfort (some riders wore bike shorts under jodhpurs and said it was a good idea) You can go as fast (we did at times 😀) or as slow as you want.
It really is a must do! Book your trip now! I'm trying to work out how I can do it every year, it was a brilliant adventure. Worth every cent. Thanks John and Roz, Louise and Mhairi, Frank and Ray. Hope I'll be back.

I did the 6 night trip in March 2014 with 4 friends. We all had a wonderful time and want to return to do it again. The horses were well trained and a pleasure to ride, the scenery was simply breathtaking and the hospitality from Roz and John Rudd and their staff was unsurpassed. The whole thing was well run and lots of fun. i would recommend it to anyone who has a love of the outdoors whether an experienced rider or a beginner.

I went on the 4day/3 night trek. The rooms at the homestead are lovely, very clean and warm with all the comforts. Ros and John are very friendly and hospitable. The food prepared by Frank was exceptional. We had bad weather on our first day so it was decided that we would ride around the farm on the first day. This actually worked out really well as I was not really sure how many layers I would be need to be comfortable and after that first day I realised you need as many layers as you can manage. It gets really cold up there. The horses were lovely and in great condition. The second day of riding when we went into the mountains was 99% walking which was a bit disappointing as of the 7 of us, 6 were all experienced riders and would have liked a bit more activity, however on the third day things relaxed a bit and we were free to trot and canter alongside the main group so long as you stayed within sight. It was fantastic and definitely my favourite day. The scenery is magnificent. Getting into camp after riding a whole day it was wonderful to see food being prepared and a blazing campfire. The sleeping bags provided are good quality and they give you ample blankets, foam mattresses and a pillow so I was really warm and comfortable. Their are no ablution facilities at the campsite other than a long drop toilet which was spotlessly clean with no smells. Definitely one of the best I have encountered! All in all I absolutely loved it and would definitely do it again. My only real criticism is that communication upon booking is not good, although you receive your invoice and a PDF brochure attached to your email there is very little content in the email itself and no follow up email to tell you if they have received your payment and are expecting you so you are left a little in the dark. However it all worked out really well so it is a minor criticism. Thanks for a wonderful weekend Ros, John, Patrick, Brad and Ralph, you were amazing hosts.

+1
This was an extraordinary experience where all of our expectations were exceeded. Ros and John have an outstanding staff and an awe inspiring part of the world to visit. The horses were true mountain horses - capable, shore footed, very willing, exceptionally well behaved and an absolute pleasure to ride and be with. We are experienced riders and we were well catered for in terms of horses and challenge, but we had beginner riders on the trip as well and they too were carefully looked after and catered for. The two nights at the homestead were exceptional. Staff were so attentive and nothing is too much trouble. Ros is the ultimate country host and the hospitality was second to none. The nights out on camp were the same. Frank (the Irish chef) produced astounding meals for our large group. All done with a quiet and unflappable character and a steady hand and eye on the whole of the camp. Thanks Frank - you added a spectacular element to the trip that we simply had not anticipated.
Horse riding staff were also extraordinary. Brad matched riders to horses with amazing intuition. Everyone felt safe, catered for and cared for. His warm character and beautiful sense of humour saw us all very comfortable. He presented a perfect balance of utmost safety alongside freedom and flexibility for the better riders. An enormous challenge that he rose to every day and made it look easy! Thanks Brad (keep up the bush poetry please!) You made the trip for us! Rose and Crystal supported Brad and the whole team to make sure nothing went wrong and everyone was happy and relaxed. Without doubt it was this amazingly capable staff who made this experience so extraordinary.
The homestead is a beautiful place to stay. Rooms are warm and comfortable and very well attended. Shared bathrooms (plenty of facilities) are kept exceptionally clean and well appointed. Housekeeping and office staff are the same very high quality as all of the staff, no matter what your needs are.
The scenery on the ride is astonishing. From long sunny plains where the brumbies are running to breathtaking mountain tops and everything in between. We were particularly excited to see some of the old bushman's huts and loved stopping there for lunches.
Thank you John and Ros for sharing your piece of paradise with us and for gathering such a brilliant staff to ensure the trips are of the highest standard possible.
