This place is a jewel in a small community 14 Miles south of The Dalles Oregon. The Owners and staff where all very friendly and extremely helpful. Our room was one of the smallest with a shared bathroom. Even though the Hotel was packed, that was not a problem at all. We sat outside on a cool spring evening at the...

Our queen sized room - Number 24 with a private bath - was on the third floor. Antiques and original art provided the most comfortable setting. We felt most at home in this historic hotel with its gracious hosts and friendly service. We enjoyed our light dinner and yummy gourmet breakfast along with our stay. They even set up a...

I found this place by chance looking for somewhere to rest and recharge for a few days and so glad I did! Old world charm with the modern comforts you need and without the modern distractions you don't (tv). Beautiful historic building to just relax put your feet up and feel at home in the wonderful communal sitting room, with...

Wow, we sure had a special experience at the Balch Hotel. The staff were all very knowledgeable about the surrounding areas & were such lovely people. Especially Deborah, who checked us in. We left something very important in our room after we check out, and she found it & mailed it to us. I can't wait to return! Thank you...

We returned to this historic hotel for our anniversary because of our lovely first experience there last year...and were not disappointed! Set in the small town of Dufur, you travel up from the Colombia River & The Dalles, OR along the old Barlow Trail for about 20 miles through rolling hills covered with wheat fields, vineyards & orchards to reach...

Since relocating to The Dalles in Columbia Gorge nearly 3 years ago, I've visited the Balch Hotel 6 or 7 times. Three of these have been overnight or weekend stays and others were dinner gatherings organized by Claire called Sisterhood Suppers. Josiah and Claire have gone to great lengths to create a sense of community at their hotel by offering...

We went here to watch the yearly August meteor shower. The hotel grounds were very nice. They had entertainment on the lawn, a folk rock singer who played mellow music while people sat and drank wine and ate. And children played on the lawn. The Hotel has a restaurant and the food is good. All in all a perfect evening....

I had a wonderful week here in this comfortable and cozy hotel. I love how it features local art and photography and the staff and owners were very kind, accommodating and friendly. The beds are comfy and the complementary breakfast is made with homemade care and goodness. There are no TV's in the rooms but the WIFI is excellent and...

This 1907 property is in the tiny town of Dufur, 14 miles south of The Dalles on Highway 97. Rooms are modest but pleasant (some have baths down the hall), and there is no elevator. The public spaces on the ground floor are most comfortable, and breakfast is excellent. Within 100 yards is the collection of old farm equipment and...
