We spent 4 nights at the Joglo Plawang. We had reviewed Trip Advisor and knew there could be some hit and miss, but overall, more miss than hit.

The good:
Beautiful property in terms of landscape, rooms, layout
Interesting use of traditional Javanese materials, felt very "fancy local"
Friendly staff
Spacious rooms (we stayed in the Royal Villa)
Very sweet village just around the corner, and the location in the heart of snake fruit cultivation land is pretty

The bad:
Staff's English is severely limited. We had a terrible time communicating what we needed.
Staff is not helpful in the concierge department - a problem when you list yourself as an international boutique. This is most likely linked to the language issues, but the hotel doesn't even have a map of Yogyakarta on site. In our travels we found numerous maps based on a number of interest areas, so maps are clearly available, just a detail this hotel is missing. If you plan to stay here, make sure you know exactly what you want to do ahead of time.
The location is not good, actually worse than not good, if you want to see Yogyakarta. We ended up being in a the hotel taxi a minimum of 40+ minutes anytime we wanted to go out. This ended up being costly, and also time consuming.
The cleaning staff is not particularly attentive to detail and we found a lot of dead insects in the corners of the room. Some bugs are okay, but when the cleaning staff would miss the bugs day in and out it was annoying. Any visitor should know that the 4:30am call to prayer for the local mosque is really loud It sounded like the loud speaker was on top of our room. This was particularly difficult because we have an infant, who didn't go back to sleep easily after being woken up at 4:30am. The final call is at 7pm, which can also jostle an infant trying to go to sleep. Overall, if this hotel had been charging budget rates we would have been pretty happy, but the prices were not commensurate with the service delivered. There was no sign of any management on staff the entire time we were there. I would recommend that the owner spend more time on the property and work to smooth out the rough edges. This place has a lot of potential, but it is currently unrealized.

My room: S4 (detached luxury twin-roomed villa)

Pros:
Friendly staff, staff carry suitcases to room, free WiFi in restaurant area, evening entertainment (Thurs, Fri, Sat), spacious room with large ensuite shower, fridge, air-con, colour TV (all non-English language channels), cool-water open-air pool, numerous outdoor seating areas, tranquil stream in small valley with footbridge runs down middle of accommodation villas, good choice of English and Indonesian food at breakfast (complete order form the day before).

Cons:
Hotel reception/pool and detached villas split between a main road (from central Java to Yogyakarta, Solo and beyond), although security guards are always on hand to stop the traffic. Javanese-style villas have thin walls (wood/cement) which provide limited soundproofing from the traffic noise.

NB. Joglo Plawang Boutique Villa is a 30 minute drive out of Yogyakarta.

A nice resort that's almost there in terms of providing high end accommodation - 80% of things are v. good but somethings (bathrooms - in particular the showers, bed linen looked 'well-used' etc.) still feel a bit cheap / rough around the edges

Overall we enjoyed the (limited) time we spent in the resort itself - i think we may have actually been the only guests as i never saw another person other than staff... The rooms are very spacious, clean and pleasant, food (breakfast) was good, service was also good.

However, as we were out and about sight seeing most of the time its location generally meant we were adding anything between 30-45 mins to the travel time needed to get, which was a bit of a pain to be honest.

If you're looking for a spot to hang out and relax it's a good choice. However, if you going to be out and about all day every day there may be other more convenient (and equally nice?) spots elsewhere.

The Joglo Plawang made our holiday to Java totally worthwhile. This hotel is for the discerning traveller who can appreciate traditional Javanese interior decoration and authentic Javanese cuisine. The hotel is situated on the outskirts of Yogyakarta but is easily accessible by a taxi (arrange it yourself and the journey is not expensive). The staff are mild-mannered and don't appear interested in your money (as you see in many hotels) but satisfying clients instead. There is a beautifully-decorated restaurant serving traditional Java dishes. Each one is immaculately prepared and exquisite in taste. At lunchtime you can also sit on a terrace which overlooks a scenic river flowing through the hotel complex. The rooms are very clean and rather luxurious - wonderful soft clean, jet-white bedding, dark Javanese furniture, fruit, soft ambient lighting etc The hotel is like a tranquil haven away from the hustle and bustle of Yogyakarta. The hotel owner clearly knows something about high-class decor and high standards of service. All the staff were delightful. We stayed here for six nights and it soon felt like home for us. The staff would make regular kind gestures such as occasionally washing and pressing our clothes for free (as a token of appreciation). We hired a driver and guide and travelled from this hotel to various locations on a daily basis - Borobudur, Prambanan, Solo, Dieng temple, Mount Merapi etc It was always a pleasure to return back to the Joglo Plawang. This is a hotel where one can really relax. The pool is beautiful and clean. I would recommend that guests take a walk around the hotel complex as we made so many lovely discoveries by doing so. The large, impersonal hotels of Yogyakarta are no comparison. In fact, we had a terrible stay at the supposedly good hotel called "The Phoenix" (see my review). I really hope many more travellers read this review and discover what a gem of a boutique hotel the Joglo Plawang is. We are planning to return next year. Thank you to all the staff for making us feel at home.

The pictures and online description do not reflect the real experience at this "boutique international" hotel. We needed to stay in the area to attend a conference and thought the EXPENSIVE price combined with the gorgeous photos was going to be perfect. We were sadly mistaken. The nice driver who picked us up from the airport was the only person who spoke to us, we were the only guests, there was not a soul for us to communicate with, we could not leave the property because there was nowhere to go, and the presidential suite was big, not beautiful.
Needless to say we left as soon as the sun came up and stayed in the city that was 40 minutes back toward the airport, and totally messed up our ability to access the conference.

Hotel situated in a quiet location. Hotel design is beautiful. There is natural river inside, the landscape is also very green & natural. Furniture of Java traditional can be very interesting for foreign tourist. But some attention should be taken by the management. Room un-cleanliness really degrade the 4 star become guesthouse (many bugs, washtafel leackage, thick dust in furnitures, door exfoliate, etc)... breakfast menu is very limited & so so... As the room rate is high, but many negatives they have, would suggest you avoid this hotel & book more secure international chain hotels... NOT RECOMMENDED

It has long been an ambition to visit Borobudur and I wanted to stay in a hotel that was full of character and charm. Being a lone traveller a boutique hotel is a good choice being small and usually has a good atmosphere. I booked in for four nights and was pleased it was in the Countryside. My mistake was it was out of season and I was the only guest in the hotel.
My room was large and full of traditional teak carvings. Not badly equipped except that the layout did not make good use of the vast space available.
The gardens were truly beautiful and the staff a delight.
Why was the place in decline? Broken furniture in the garden, gym equipment was covered in dust and had not worked for years, pathways and bridges that were rotting away.
The restaurant was beautiful very traditional and full of musical instruments. The food was OK but nothing special.

It could be somewhere very special.....sadly managements must sort out its long term problems and invest in the future.

Will I be back.....NO

- Need to choose royal room for the bathroom quality.
- Nice stuff but some of them can not well understand English.
- Television's quality is very very pool but Wi-Fi is ok.
- Good experience when we going out with driver.

Just don't understand when this hotel receive 120 people for a lunch meeting, why they don't separate the restaurant's area and villa area. When we come back from visiting, just saw people eating on our terrace and very noisy!!
This hotel can't named Boutique Villa.

Being close to nature..I love it! There's a river running tru within the villa compound. What more the ambince of having live cultural music performance during the evening..its a wonderful feeling.
Food...Should try the Indonesian meal. Its sumptuous!
Location of the hotel is a bit far away from the city area..but its a great hideaway esp for someone like me who stayed in the city for almost all my adult life..i miss my childhood life staying close to nature. Villa to airport is 30mins drive.
Free wifi acess even in the comfort of my own room.
The staffs are all very very friendly <3
Room...stayed in twin deluxe room. Complimentary basket of fruits and bottled water in the room. There's no hair dryer tho. Since its very close to the mountanuos area...its very cooling and during the nite we slept w/o the aircon on.
I'll definitely would be coming back to this villa during my next stay in Jogja!

I write this review on behalf of my parents (both over 80) who stayed at this hotel in December. The hotel arranged airport transfer and greeted them with a sign with their names on. My parents rented the hotel car for a competative rate and the guide showed the the temple nearby. As my parents, due to their age, need more attention that other hotel guest and they worried a bit whether they can stay there alone. The staff, however, made the trip an unforgettable experience for my parents. I can highly recommend this hotel.
