The lodge is spacious, warm, open, airy and fully decked out for all your needs. My mother, father, husband and myself stayed for 2 nights at Tarkine Wilderness Lodge as a special 80th Birthday treat for my Dad.
We had already enjoyed memorable experiences in the Tarkine having spent time at Corinna and the Piemann River and the lodge certainly provided a fitting finale!
The owner and host, Maree, went out of her way to make us feel comfortable and at home. A lovely chocolate cake (with candle) was waiting for Dad when we arrived and we were treated to lovely home cooked delicious lunches and dinners during our stay.
The walk through the rainforest was wonderful and Maree was careful to move at a comfortable pace for my Dad. Her commentary was fascinating and we were fortunate to see 3 Tasmanian wedge-tailed eagles and a giant fresh water crayfish... both threatened species. Lots of brightly coloured funghi provided surprising pops of colour amongst the green mosses and ferns! Maree is an inspirational environmentalist whose knowledge of the Tarkine and commitment to its preservation is infectious... we left with a much deeper appreciation of old growth forests and those who work to protect them. Thank you Maree!

I feel almost traitorous writing a negative review about this place, as Maree, the host and owner is a wonderful, passionate and caring person, however if our expectations had not been quite so high our experience would have been better, so I hope I can help future travellers to be a little better informed before they commit to stay.
Firstly, the web site, although not untruthful, is misleading. We had envisioned private, luxurious accommodation within the rain forest, however the lodge itself is perched on a bare hill. It is certainly "surrounded" by the forest, but at a distance. Having said that, the views were still stunning, and the sunsets splendid.
Secondly, the privacy factor ... oh dear. We were gob-smacked to discover that Maree now lives within the building, and we were in fact, sharing her house. Although she went out of her way to not be intrusive, and always told us when she would be around, we still felt like house guests.
We had opted for the very expensive food inclusive option ($400 per night), but on arrival, our "cheese platter" was a simple matter of helping ourselves to whatever already opened dips and cheeses were in her fridge! The food for the rest of the weekend, although plentiful, was quite basic, and in true country style, focused on quantity.
The building itself was stunning, heavily timbered and glassed, the bed ultra comfortable, the room and bathroom squeaky clean. We only did a short walk through the forest, and wish we could have done one of the longer walks, as Maree is an excellent and knowledgeable guide with a real passion for this special place that needs the protection of warriors such as she. So in conclusion; go by all means, but go with a thought to focus on the rainforest walks, and not the lodge. Also, perhaps opt for the cheaper option of paying extra for food.

Thank you for your review of The Tarkine Wilderness Lodge. It was pleasing to read your positive comments but of course very disappointing to learn that you were not completely satisfied with your stay as I strive for guest satisfaction at all times. I feel I must respond to some of the comments you made. As you correctly state The Lodge is located on a hill but this location gives the most spectacular view of the rainforest. We do not own the rainforest (Government owned) but our property adjoins the rainforest and is only 200 metres from The Lodge. As for our advertising it is clear from all the photos of the actual building, that it is not situated in the rainforest. In relation to your comment regarding privacy yes I do reside at The Lodge but as it says on the webpage you do not share The Lodge with other guests (as the owner I do not consider myself a guest). I make every effort to be non- intrusive to my guests to ensure their privacy. If guests wish sole occupancy of The Lodge then this is available at the appropriate package and several guests have taken up this offer. Your comments in relation to the cheese platter were very disappointing as this was a complimentary gesture and was not included in your package. Had you purchased an Indulgence Package a full cheese platter with wine would have been served to you and the offer to ‘help yourself to cheeses etc in the fridge’ would not have been made. Thank you for acknowledging my passion for the Tarkine Wilderness and what I am endeavouring to achieve for the environment. I will address the comments you have made and endeavour to improve on them. I look forward to your return visit in the future. Maree Jenkins Owner/Manager

Although I didn't stay at the lodge I did manage to look through the property - thank you Maree. The lodge has magnificent views from any window and the wildlife is everywhere. The Tarkine Wilderness Lodge is a one off, the design will take your breath away, and the timber used I'm sure has a story of its own. Having a B&B of my own you tend to look at the small things, there is nothing spared here everything has been thought of and kept to a very big standard.
Maree took us on a walk through the wonderful rainforest, a must if you head that way, there was so much to take in, Marees passion for the area is evident when she starts to talk about of the rainforest I could of stayed for ever just listening to her. I will be back to stay.

The Lodge sits on a hill encircled 360° by stunning rainforest and in rain, mist or full sun, the views are to die for. To sit outside on the beautifully handmade deck chairs with a cuppa in the morning sun & watch the mist rise around Phantom Peak or follow the path of a white goshawk as it moves against the verdancy of the forest, is a truly serene … and exclusive … experience.
The rainforest was the reason and the passion behind the brilliantly and aesthetically designed and built Lodge which sits in its location with perfect sensitivity. The even more impressive interior displaying the irresistibly tactile grain of the exposed timbers and furniture, all handmade form reclaimed timber destined to be burned, is a testament to the ethos of appreciation and preservation of wilderness synonymous with the Lodge. The ingenuity behind the building and its fittings, all made on site, is worthy of a place on ‘Grand Designs’.
The Lodge is immaculately maintained & although it has 3 double rooms each with ensuite, offers exclusive occupancy and would be ideal for families or groups of friends as well as individual couples.
Delicious gourmet lunches and dinners are prepared by hostess and owner Maree from fresh garden vegetables and local produce while the fully equipped kitchen and bar cater for all other hungers.
To ensure the privacy of her guests Maree keeps her distance in a totally separate building but is always available if needed which we think is a shame because she is an extremely talented and uniquely beautiful human being with an effervescence and wealth of knowledge of the Tarkine and deep and genuine passion for its preservation.
To this end Maree offers fully guided rainforest walks and is only too happy to meet any request or need … and she has one or two new activities in the wings planned to enhance even further a remarkable destination.
From the complimentary port and chocolates on arrival to the bath linen tied with satin bows, Tarkine Wilderness Lodge offers nothing but luxury and the exclusive enjoyment of its beautiful rainforest surroundings. It is easily accessible by 2 WD with clear and foolproof driving directions supplied on booking.

My friend and I didn't stay at the lodge we just went to do the walk and what a delight it was. Maree is knowledgable, passionate about the forest and a delightful guide.
As someone who has some mobility problems Maree set a gentle pace and frequently checked I was doing OK and was always ready to offer a hand over any tricky bits and was most encouraging.
The walk is breathtakingly beautiful and Maree is an excellent guide.
We looked at the lodge itself and thought it would be a beautiful place to stay.
Thank you Maree for sharing your beautiful corner of the world with us.

We stayed for 2 nights at the Tarkine Wilderness Lodge in Tasmania, it was fabulous. The lodge itself boasts Tasmanian timbers, and beautiful local art works, plenty of interesting books and articles to read, stunningly presented, clean, and comfortable. We felt "at home" immediately, more so due to Maree's easy going manner and cheerful disposition. She is a wonder herself, a passionate guardian of the rainforest in which she walks everyday. We had the lodge to ourselves and had a perfectly relaxing and enjoyable time. The rainforest walk was amazing, knowledgeable and beautiful. It did not seem like a 3 hour walk at all!! We could have kept going. Our room was delightful, facing out to the forest, lovely decor, warm and comfy. Then there was the food! Home cooked meals of Tasmanian produce and the bounty of Maree's vege patch. Delicious; good wine at reasonable prices, a fully stocked bar, fridge and fabulous kitchen. Maree and her Dad, Peter, and Ben, the dog, made our weekend special, but were not at all intrusive. I would highly recommend this as a special holiday, or just a day trip.

My husband and I stayed here a few months ago and were amazed that this world class accommodation was less than 2 hours drive from our home. The owner Maree is very passionate and provides a wilderness experience, not just accommodation. We opted for dinner at the lodge which was about $40 for a 2 course dinner. Arriving in the early evening, we entered the building to find delicious smells coming from the open kitchen in the beautiful lodge. We had the place to ourselves for the evening and it would have to be one of the most peaceful and relaxing places I have stayed. The next morning we could see the view from our location in the daylight - WOW the location is gorgeous. Maree took us for a walk in the rain forest to see a huge tree and we would love to have had time for one of the longer walks. We will be back again and hope others have the chance to experience the Tarkine Wilderness and Maree's Lodge

The lodge is situated in one of the most pristine and welcomingly isolated micro environments in Tasmania, in the vast, rarely visited Tarkine wilderness in the extreme northwest of the island. Maree, one of the owners and our host, leads a fascinating three-hour hike into the nearby wilderness, cooks incredible dinners, and takes in orphaned wallabies. There is no internet but for our three night stay we didn't miss it. I wish Anthony Bourdain had visited here.
