Schouten House Bed and Breakfast is a heritage listed home, rich in history and a well known landmark on Tasmania's East Coast. Built in 1844 as an inn it is one of the first substantial buildings to appear in Swansea when the township was being established around a military base on Waterloo Point. Now a comfortable bed and breakfast offering traditional accomodations and a warm welcome, it is an excellent place to call home while you explore the coast and Freycinet Peninsula, or just as a relaxing getaway. Hearty cooked breakfasts, including options such as scrambled eggs with smoked salmon, or our popular pancakes with (really real) maple syrup and bacon, are included for all guests.

Detailed Reviews
Our group of 6 booked three rooms at Schouten house for a two night stay.
The room we had was exceptionally clean and functional. We were welcomed by the owners and they took the time to explain the attractions of the area in addition to a history of the property.
Very friendly and warm people. Heating was on in the house on a quite cold two days. Plates and cutlery were provided for our grazing platters free of charge.
Breakfast was magnificent. Try the oatmeal muesli.
We would have no hestitation in staying again and recommending Schouten house to others.

We stayed one night in this beautiful cosy bed and breakfast and our only regret is that we couldn't stay longer. Our hosts were friendly and welcoming. Our room was elegantly furnished, clean and comfortable. I would highly recommend the breakfast which was of a very high quality. We complimented their Bircher Musli and they kindly offered to e mail the receipe to us. A very relaxing and positive experience.

+1
We stayed here two nights travelling with our friends. We were so pleased we found Schouten House. Hosts Jodie and Cameron work as a fabulous team, providing their guests with a high level of care and consideration. The historic B&B is beautifully decorated, so quiet and so comfortable. The breakfasts are something else, generous servings with locally sourced produce (the bacon was divine). And don't miss out on Cameron's famous shortbread and his bread for breakfast. There are two sitting rooms (one with a roaring fire) for guests to relax. There were so many little touches that made this B&B so special. As we drove out of Swansea, the four of us were already planning a return trip when Jodie and Cameron have their next project - the room for foodies - up and running!

Stayed here for 2 nights in January 2008. Georgian House which would benefit from a major cleanup as there appeared to be dust from the Georgian period throughout!!!. Bedroom dusty and musty. Bedlinen was clean but bed covering and pillows smelled musty. Shower curtain very stained, admittedly there is an issue with water in the area but a new curtain or a good clean of the existing one would certainly look better. Dirty fingermarks on the bathroom door. The entire place felt dirty,. Did not eat breakfast on the first morning based on the cleanliness of the bedroom and entrance hall but did on the second morning and it appeared to be excellent, great coffee.
If you like your accommodation clean, I would not recommend a stay here in it's current condition.

After a wonderful tour of Tasmania this was such a disappointment. Our room was dusty and dark and smelt musty. The bathroom was tiny with an awful stained shower curtain. We didnt stay for breakfast due to the overall cleanliness of the place.

We had 3 nights stay at Schouten House. We had the ground floor room which was spacious and furnished with lovely furniture and a super comfy bed that was hard to leave in the mornings.
The building is gorgeous and historic.
The breakfasts are simply sumptuous and amazing, made more so by all the home made items available. Proper home made bread and jams, baked oatmeal, yum, poached fruits from their garden, and delicious well prepared cooked breakfasts with good choices. And their tea served in a pot is fantastic.
Cameron’s shortbread served on arrival with a cuppa is THE BEST!
The additional things that I really liked were the hospitality tray in the room with tea and coffee, the battery clock not the digital ones that I dislike, extra towels, complimentary tea and coffee in the guest lounge.
We really loved the decor and the care and generosity that is so much like the traditional good quality bed and breakfast establishments we so loved in the UK.
Jodie and Cameron are justifiably proud of what they do and how they care for their guests. I loved being spoiled.

Very gracious hosts at this old building that is now a B&B/hotel. A few blocks to "downtown" Swansea, which is only a small community. Breakfast in the morning was very good, with homemade jam and a variety of breakfast options.

We stayed here overnight on a week trip to Tasmania from NZ. We booked only at boutique or luxury B&B type accommodation. The house was comfortable, but it was a little unnerving to be explained the "rules" upon arrival! The rooms are definitely of period style, but not at all luxurious and no modern amenities. Everything was clean and tidy, but just didn't hit the mark compared to other properties we stayed in. Needs an update by someone with a flair for tasteful redecoration. Definitely need a car to drive for an evening meal. The pub meal we had nearby was fine. Breakfast was a highlight with smoked salmon scrambled eggs and homemade jams etc, the best of our stay! If you're after historical period features then this is your place.

We came down to Swansea on a whim (booked 3 days in advance) and were very lucky to find accommodation for two nights at Schouten House. Jodie and Cameron warmly welcomed us to their home. The room was spacious and spotlessly clean, and the bed comfortable. The highlight of our two night stay was the breakfast; home cooking at its best. I strongly recommend the ratatouille, the house made baked beans and jams, baked oatmeal, Cameron’s bread, the spicy stewed apples... unfortunately our stay did not give us the opportunity to try everything on menu.

This B&B is amazing. The owners are friendly and helpful and cook such a great breakfast that alone would keep me coming back. The rooms are spacious, clean, warm, comfortable and everything from the furniture to the fixtures and fittings keeps in line with the historical feeling of the house. I slept in a bed older than my home town and it was dreamy.
The breakfast was amazing, just delicious with so many little goodies to choose from, and it is all sourced locally and sustainably. I just loved knowing where each mouthful of my food and drink were sourced.
Swansea is a beautiful sleepy town a stonesthrow away from some of the great hikes and lookouts in the Freycinet national park, and was a fantastic place to base ourselves for the night before a day of hiking and exploring. The B&B offers a wide range of information on local day tours and trips accessible to guests.
