Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Kitchen: Rubbish bins (Otto bins), 2, in kitchen full and overflowing while cooking dinner. Not emptied till later that evening. No detergent, had to ask for some. No tea towels and no racks to hang them.
Room: Bedside lamps had no globes and overhead light very dim. Couldn't get globes, they brought in a standard lamp.
Bathroom: Little privacy in shower, the partition between showers is low, not very comfortable if privacy is preferred. The shower wet almost the whole floor. No bench to put things.
Signage: ALL signs had some sort of error, grammatical or spelling
Price: Expensive. Cost more than each of the 2 country pubs we stayed in on previous nights, and they provided included breakfast and NO rubbish

It’s an unusual place. Good price but undecorated rooms. The person at reception was drunk but friendly. We had to make our own beds and the mattresses were old but comfortable enough. It’s right next to a drive-in bottle shop which doesn’t make a very good first impression and out the back is a camper van graveyard which adds to it. But on the plus side there were two other families staying and it generally had a nice feeling amongst the guests.

Not an easy review to write due to conflicting thoughts. On the one hand, this is an immaculately kept hostel with a well equipped kitchen, comfortable sitting area, games, books, and cosy rooms with luxurious electric underblankets. On the other hand, we found the atmosphere very oppressive and uncomfortable. On arriving, one of the staff asked us to bring out bikes into the main room, then another member of staff was quite unpleasant with us for having done so, until her colleague pointed out we'd done it under instruction. We then had staff hovering over us for a while, making us feel like they were waiting for us to do something else 'wrong'. Wierdly, the cooker required dollar coins to run, but the microwave was free to use. The main eating/sitting area was almost deserted - all other visitors bar one seemed to have retreated to their rooms, perhaps to avoid the staff. The showers were coin-operated with a 'go slow' valve at the end of the shower (in theory) but in practise seemed to never go fast in the first place. The next day, we moved all our bags outside into the courtyard area on the advice of one of the members of staff and were out of our rooms and out of the communal areas by check-out time, going to look round the town. When we then came back to pick up our bags a different member of staff was quite aggressive again asking us why we were still on site and we should have left by now. There seem not to be common policies amongst staff, and if you follow advice from one you get aggressive criticism from another. It felt like being back at a strict and not very consistent school! Suffice to say that despite the spotless facilities and comfy beds the atmosphere was such that I would never choose to stay here again.

I wanted to stay here, really. But Tasmania locked down its borders and I couldn't visit (from the closest mainland state, Victoria). They refused to issue a refund or even offer travel credit.

You can be sure I will not be staying here once your border reopens. There are many other accommodation providers more deserving of my tourist dollars.

Spirit of Tasmania and the other accommodations we booked with were a class act. Never mind what their booking or cancellations policy stated, refunds were issued. I will remember and try to support them once we are allowed to travel again!

I booked this trip with my daughter. She would stay in the room. I would stay in our van. We arrived to find no one at reception.
One of the visitors, who happened to be inside at the time, had to let me in.

The whole premises is so revoltingly unhygienic and in need of repair, that we had to leave after our first night of a three night stay. I realise times are tough for many businesses at present, but there is no excusefir parking huge rubbish bins outside the bedroom doors, and the amount of dirt that was everywhere in the hostel. I've stayed at many budget places, and that is not a reads for built up grime.
See photos.
Ps. The manager was very rude to us when we rang to pololitley let him know that we just could not stay. No refund was given for two nights.

The new owner Chris is very helpful and friendly. Place is clean and lots of space to chill. Kitchen is big and many equipment. We slept in our Campervan, outside was quiet and good atmosphere. Even if your just up for a hot shower for 5$ - you're welcome here!

We stayed one night in our caravan, unpowered, grassed site. Great value at $25 per night for 2 people. Very clean amenities. Bottle shop, cafe and tavern on site. Close to all that Swansea has to offer - walk to town and beaches. Wineries a short drive away.

I stayed in a family room with my husband and 2 brothers. Nothing was too much trouble for the owner and there was a fantastic vibe within the backpackers. We only stayed one night, but would have liked to stay longer. While it is not a five star accommodation, neither is the price - it was clean, the bed was comfortable and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

This hostel has only recently come under new management. You are greeted straight away by the lovely owner. The place is so clean and tidy. Kitchen is great with lots of space. Bedrooms are clean and so comfortable. Toilets and showers are also kept very clean and tidy.
There is a real homely atmosphere to the place. Definitely one of the better hostels I've stayed in.

We enjoyed our stay. Friendly manager and staff, the kitchen is is clean and handy, the living room is spacious and cosy, and the hostel is situated right next to a bakery, a restaurant and a bottle shop. On the top of these Chris is a very lovely guy - we recommend this place!
