Risby Cove is Strahan’s only true waterfront accommodation, set historically in a peaceful cove that once was a commercial maritime centre. This haven in the wilderness allows the guest to watch the spectacular sunsets, explore the nearby rainforest and is only a short walk to the Gordon River Cruise Boats and West Coast Wilderness Railway Station. Taking inspiration from its origin, the style is rustic, yet modern, with ironclad exteriors and well-appointed interiors offering every comfort. Every suite and studio overlooks the private marina, as does our award-winning restaurant that serves Australian cuisine. In the distance, a pier where crayfishing boats berth is surrounded with fascinating shipwrecks. The spa rooms are perfect for couples wanting a romantic waterfront escape and the two bedroom family rooms have plenty of space (with large rooms in particular) and balconies to watch the waterfront maritime activity.

We stayed here 3 nights and prior to booking I had telephoned the hotel to discuss the choice of room and what we were looking for. We were allocated The Jetty and it was perfect.
Very spacious, in fact it had two bedrooms and a large lounge and kitchen, balcony with glorious views, over the Bay, and tight on the waters edge. Spacious bathroom with good shower over the bath.
We had requested the hamper breakfast and again this was very good.
We think this is the best value for money on any of the hotels we have stayed at in our 3 weeks touring Tasmania.
Out of 5 stars I rate this hotel as follows:
Location 5* - just 10 minutes walk from town centre/ Cruises etc.
Room 5*
Sleep Comfort 4*
Breakfast 4*
Wifi - 3* very slow at times.
Staff/Reception - Excellent welcome, efficient, and helpful.
Value for Money 5*
We loved our stay here and great location for taking the Heritage Boat Cruise and the West Coast Wilderness Railway.
Thoroughly recommend.

Our stay at Risby Cove is easily described...great friendly reception staff, easy listening jazz in the lounge to catch up with reading or emails, good wi-fi in an area of Tasmania not known for speedy connections, comfortable beds, well appointed cabins and a fabulous view of a corner of MacQuarrie Harbour. We were quickly at ease with the proximity to town centre and to activities (walking distance to Harbour Cruises, the train and to Hogarth Falls) and to many good restaurants.

With visiting ducks looking to share our breakfast, this stop became one of our favourite stay. Our unit, the "Boatshed" included a sitting area and kitchenette as well as a spacious modern bathroom. Wonderful stay, recommend it to anyone.

After the drive from Hobart we arrived at Risby Cove to a warm welcome from the owner she showed us to our room and suggested we book at table in the restaurant as there were only 2 vacancies left let’s say I am glad we did the food was fabulous. We had a deluxe waterfront suite ‘The Sawmill’ it had everything we needed our booking included breakfast each morning and that was already in the fridge for us. The king bed was comfortable, the room was clean with a large screen TV. The views from our room were amazing and we were able to walk to the Wilderness Rail and also the Gordon River Cruise.

We stayed for 2 nights in a balcony suite.

The room was nice but a bit dated and shower is mouldy. The lighting needed work as it’s so dark inside at nighttime. The air conditioning/heating which is situated above the kitchen area doesn’t quite reach the bedroom.

If you are a light sleeper I don’t recommend a balcony suite. These rooms are situated above the restaurant and the music and noise from downstairs can be heard until 11:30pm at night.

What was really disappointing was to have paid $40 extra for breakfast provisions and to receive: 4 slices of supermarket bread, 1 small bottle of orange juice, 2 small nestle vanilla yoghurt tubs (2nd ingredient sugar), 2 Uncle Toby’s muesli sachets, and 2 green apples.
We could have put that together ourselves for $10. I was expecting something gourmet and local (eg local muesli, small loaf of bread from a local bakery) given the price.

This place was spotless! And I love a clean hotel. Hats off to the owners. We didnt realise they make up the room daily and in the rush to head to the Gordon River Cruise we left our bed unmade, dishes in the sink and on our return it was all spotless once again. I was so embarrassed but appreciated the hospitality.
We really enjoyed our stay here especially the tiny kitchenette which was filled with bread, jams and strawberries.
Another personal touch was Port and chocolates. Which was lovely after a long day driving and something to keep you warm.
Very unique setting and cute little town.
The owners were just delightful and really made you feel at home. Even putting up with me on checkout where we chatted and shared a tear about life and I suppose the importance of travel. Never forget their compassion - thank you.

We stayed at Risby Cove for 3 nights. We could not have asked for more, even though it was a contactless booking in all the information was in the envelope. The cabin, we stayed in The Sawmill, was so well equipped, it was spotlessly clean and very comfortable. The view of the harbour was so peaceful. The cabin contained everything and more that we needed, ample milk, coffee, tea, pod coffee even complimentary port. Great shower, big spa bath, comfortable sitting area and a very efficient heat pump. We met the owners who called in to see if we needed anything and to inform us of the weather the next day and which roads were closed as we were leaving the next day regrettably. I would highly recommend the Risby Cove. We will be back.

We just popped in for a causal dinner. Not warmly welcomed, believe as we didn’t have a reservation. Offered a table outside but only choice menu from the grill menu, which was fine but we (my wife and 3 y.o son) were made to stand around, then had to quickly order plus a drink, no time to consider then pay at the counter before being offered a table/seat, bags still in hand. Felt very awkward. Again, not shown to a table and left to find our own outside.. meals came out promptly, again, felt very rushed and for $35 dishes, I got what can only be described as “very ordinary” pork ribs. Tough and hardly edible. The waitress came over the end and asked how our meals were to my reply “not great” , just smiled, nodded, took the plates and off she went.
This is the first time I have experience such little regard for a paying customer in my life, first time review too. Speaks volumes.
For the next traveler to lovely Strachan, book ahead to this place and I just hope your experience is better than the one we just had.

We arrived late afternoon after riding a motorbike from Launceston to Strahan in the pouring rain!! We were met by the lovely owner who quickly got us into our warm, beautiful accommodation right on the waterfront - The Shack - offered us drinks to warm us up. Ate in the restaurant on site that night and were looked after by a very pleasant young Canadian waitress. Luckily the next morning the sun was shining so we could see the beautiful surroundings of Strahan and Risby Cove in particular. Thoroughly recommend a stay here and also the Gordon River Cruise from town, which is just a 10 minute walk away. Thank you for a beautiful stay.

Such a special place to stay. The views are really something special, and the rooms are beautifully appointed, spotless, and make for a real oasis. I had waterfront view and it was just incredible. The staff were also very helpful, calling ahead of time to organize a dinner booking with them (so delicious!). Highly recommend!

The location and views were exceptional. The friendly greeting and advise on facilities at both Risby Cove and in Strahan made for a perfect start to a stay in Strahan. The rooms are so well presented with several really nice touches (the port offering, the heating was already on and the room had a very nice fragrance on entering). The kitchen facilities and large bathroom were fantastic. Thank you so much for your hospitality. We have already recommended your facilities to a family member and they will most likely book rooms in October when they visit. Thanks Again.”
