Ormiston House is a beautiful federation mansion built in 1899 and fully restored to its former glory. Set amongst landscaped gardens on the shore of Macquarie Harbour at Strahan the house is resplendent with 5 en-suited guest rooms, bar and lounge, breakfast room and history room. The tower and widows walk provide views across the harbour and the perfect place to enjoy a glass of wine or sit back with a good book. This house is renown for its friendliness, hospitality and welcoming hosts. We feel that Ormiston House is a "must do" experience when you visit Strahan on your Tasmanian holiday.

Ormiston ouse would have been a true delight in its day but it has been left to decay from an external point of view. Our initial driveway entry was met with unmoved grass and general untidiness of the grounds, also some of the chairs on the front verandas were upside down as if they had been blown over in the wind and not corrected. Externally the property needs some tlc - a good coat of paint and mould cleaned off. Internally we were met by Bianca and Thomas who were lovely and very accommodating as the owner was absent. Our room - the Christine, was bright and airy and what we expected of something of this era. The big downside for us was the bed - it was so hard. Upon booking, I requested a mattress topper due to a back issue. Unfortunately that was not delivered. There was no mini fridge in the room which was a little annoying but we were able to store the cold items we had in the utility room of the property which also had the cleaning items!!! Breakfast was ordinary, substantive but ordinary. Only continental, nothing cooked. Would we stay here again - probably not. The big thing I would request of any owner of a property which houses guests is to have the best mattress you can find. It will pay in return visits and recommendations.

Strahan is only a small harbor town and it was quiet during our visit which was mainly to go on the river cruise. Ormiston House appealed due to its age and history and it is quite comfortable. The young couple who manage the facility did a really good job, were very nice and welcoming and provided a very informative tour and commentary on the history. Only thing missing were the small creature comforts e.g. TV was tiny and there was no bar fridge in our rooms.

This is a beautiful old house which is why we initiallly booked for 2 nights. We were the sole occupants - no caretajer/owner on the premuses overnight- and found it difficult to walk safely on the footpath after dinner, as there was no external light. The room needed a good clean and dust, and there was human hair on one of the teacups, in the vanity and a significant amount on the carpet, leaving us wondering if it had been vacuumed- very unsettling in the current covid climate. The bed was very soft and the main reason we decided not to stay for the second night as I have a bad back. For the $210 per night cost, we were very disappointed. We told by Thomas the caretaker that we had to pay for 2 nights but could discuss further with Terry the owner, who then claimed we had been offered other rooms by the caretaker which was untrue. He advised that we were not entitled to a refund on the second nights accommodation and abruptly ended the conversation when my partner advised him of the issues with cleanliness. We would not recommend these premises.

Having read a couple reviews was not expecting modern conveniences and therefore not disappointed. We had the Henry room, which was roomy and had the advantage of a walk in shower which suited us very well. Terry very welcoming and the house history interesting. The general feel of this home was relaxed and comfortable. The main downside was not having an accessible fridge for use, without imposing on the Terry. The toiletries provided were minimalist and no tissues supplied. The breakfast was well presented and generous. The fruit compote with yogurt a real treat. Location wise, close to wharf area and easy walking distance to eateries. Would stay again.
