Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Strahan Backpackers is a hidden gem. Tucked away in a quiet, wooded corner of town, along a trickling stream with a resident platypus, it is a peaceful place to spend a few days. The shared facilities were always clean, and there's plenty of places to lounge outdoors and in, if it's a chilly day. If you happen to take the time to read the walls, you'll leave with nuggets of wisdom from travelers past.

I actually wasn't even supposed to stay at Strahan Backpackers. I had a camping booking next door at the Big4 Holiday Retreat (which also owns Strahan Backpackers). When I arrived around 6 PM, reception was closed, and I had received no information about my campsite or facilities prior to my arrival. There was an emergency number listed on the door, and when I called it, I could hear the phone ringing inside the closed reception. Just as I started to panic, Bumpy (former general manager of Strahan Backpackers) happened to be walking past, and recommended that I go to the backpackers for assistance. Bumpy was my guardian angel that day.

I pulled up to Strahan Backpackers and I found Jeff, the general manager of Strahan Backpackers, a warm, welcoming, pleasant soul, who heard my story, and then gestured to the large grassy area along the stream and said, "pitch your tent anywhere you like, and have a hot shower!" I was so relieved. I don't know what I would have done without Jeff and Bumpy helping me out. I actually did leave a message on the emergency phone at the Big4... and no one ever called me back to find out if I figured everything out alright. In fact, it baffles me that there was no information or follow up whatsoever from the Big4 about my camping booking... but this is about Strahan Backpackers, and not them.

Jeff truly made my stay at Strahan Backpackers wonderful. I am so glad that I camped here instead of at the Big4. It's a beautiful property. And Jeff has great recommendations of things to do in the area. Do yourself a favor and book a few nights here! You won't regret it.

Awesome place to stay! You better have some humour because Bumpy (owner) is a funny, humorous, generous, loving and caring guy. 2 of us got a dorm room on Christmas holiday season and it was great. We were planning to camp but the weather turned and we needed shelter. Book a night or couple here, people are friendly and he had great rates for us. Also you can get discount on the Hertiage cruise - Gordon river if you book through Bumpy!

Just out of the centre of Strahan this Youth Hostel is brilliant. The rooms are quite small but they have enough room for all you stuff. It has 2 common rooms and 2 kitchens with great facilities. At only $30 per person it's great value.

Stayed in this hostel as part of a group tour. On leaving the bus we were basically warned to take the host’s humor with a pinch of salt.

“Greeted” by the owner Bumpy and within the first 20 mins of arriving at the hostel we were ordered into the kitchen and taught how to clean up after ourselves. Bumpy continued to show us around the grounds all the while being condescending and brash.

Throughout our stay Bumpy ordered me to get off my phone (none of his business), he walked into the female toilets while we were in the shower (creep) and most annoying of all kept reminding us he was Irish but couldn’t take the banter when challenged about his “Irish heritage”(we’re Irish).

Overall I would save yourself the headache and not stay here.

Booked a cabin confirmed via Booking.com. When we arrived they told us there were no cabins available so they put us in a noisy dorm room. Very poor communication leading up to our stay - we tried to phone the reception numerous times regarding the change of dates to our booking…they never answer their phone and when you do eventually manage to get hold of someone to talk to they are rude and completely unhelpful. When arriving we went to the backpackers reception as one would assume to…we waited there for about half an hour with no-one to help. A bus driver eventually came past and told us we needed to go to the Big4 reception in a different location to check in. Simple things that should have been communicated ahead of time or a simple sign on the door of the backpackers reception could have done the trick. Really bad booking management and check-in experience.

I have done a lot of hostels, campings, motels, etc. This place is the BEST, nothing less. The owner Bumpy welcomes you in his "home" in the best way possible, with humor and kindness. He upgraded me without me asking, just because. He understands what it means to travel backpacking. He made me feel welcome. Room, toilets, showers, kitchen...everything was super clean. The bed was comfy with 2 blankets to keep me warm and clean sheets. I wish I could have stayed a few more nights! I highly recommand this place.

I travelled on a tour of Tassie and we stayed here for 2 nights. I was lucky enough to get a cabin to myself and it was one of the best cabins I've ever stayed in! Beautiful, clean and quiet. Shared bathrooms were clean and modern. They have 2 kitchens/common areas and a BBQ area surrounded by a large garden complete with platypuses in the creek. Good location, a short stroll to shops/beach. It definitely felt like a retreat!

Well what can you say about Bumpy. Welcoming, funny, legend, an enigma, bit of a mystery. To Bumpy you are family from opening your vehicle door to leaving. The backpackers has great comfy clean beds and bedrooms, excellent updated showers. A fantastic , clean well equipped kitchen ( the fridge required wine for his special guests ) note - we where all special to Bumpy. His friend cooks up a mean shark meal , just ask I'm sure he will oblige. Don't forget to check out the Playtapus in the back garden . Go and see the sun rise and sun set. And on checkout be helpful to Bumpy and remove the Doona for washing not the sheet or pillow ... He likes helpful family....

A gracious host defines a place, and Bumpy the host makes sure that you are feel welcomed. It makes it clear that when you are there with him, you are staying at his home, and that, he expects us to treat the place as our own home too. And that in our own home, we are to treat ourselves and others with respect. His wicked sense of humour, his big heart, his generosity with his time to mingle and to interact with every and each guests truly goes down in the folklore as stuff of legend. Even though we only stayed with him for two days, by the time we left, there were a few tears and warm hugs. As for accommodation, it's basic and functional. Bumpy is in the process of renovating the men's bathroom right now, but the women's bathroom has just been done up. He would be straight to the point with you that the men's bathroom is 2 stars versus the women's which is 5 stars. There's a creek at the rear of the accommodation where platypus has burrowed their home there. And if you are the lucky few, you would get to see it late at sunset or early in the morning. If you were the younger ones, you would be placed at the main complex but for the matured and the quiet types that aspire to be left alone, then, Bumpy has got chalets at the back, where you would be left in peace. It's within walking distance away from the main town centre. From time to time, you would get to see the growl and the yelling of Bumpy but never for once, guests take him seriously because Bumpy is a kind soul, and a kind soul generates love and not hate. And the whole place is simply filled with love, gaiety and laughter. On a side note, WiFi here is crap, and Bumpy likes it that way because he felt that we are spending too much time staring at the screen when we should be living the moment. Highly recommended.

The YHA is well signposted, even in the small quaint town of Strahan. There were groups travelling both nights that we visitied but they managed to fit us into a twin room, which was cozy.

The setup is reminiscent of an American summer camp in the woods, without the hoards of prepubescents. The rooms are small, but cozy and full of character. The bunk style beds are comfortable and there is a desk and heater in the room.

We were met by the manager upon arrival, who was very friendly and chatty throughout the usual procedure of arriving at a new hostel. He pointed out the Platypus viewing area literally 20 seconds away behind the reception hut (we caught a glimpse of some platypus on 2 occasions). On checkout we had a chat about Thylacines, the atmosphere was all very friendly and comfortable throughout.

The kitchen is ample sized and stocked, even when competing with the tour groups that were there in the mornings. The common room was nice and quiet with freeview TV and a jukebox/pool table, and an additional kitchen area, perfect for tea / beer when relaxing. You have to pay for WiFi, but you are on the very cusp of the great south west wilderness and the Tarkine, why would you be on fbook?!

The town of Strachan is beautiful and the yha was a really nice place to stay, our whole experience of that part of our trip was positive.
