Detailed Reviews
I stayed in Room 45 with rooms overlooking the garden. Rooms on the other side overlook the bay and morning sunrise. All rooms have a balcony with patio furniture
As an older (70 year) woman travelling alone without transport to visit family and friends in St Helens, the Panorama provided me with a perfect location. Initially, location was the prime motivation behind my booking.
That said, the whole experience exceeded any (limited) expectations I may have had. I booked directly with the hotel. Communication regarding my booking following this was excellent.
On arrival, check in was seamless. The evening meal was excellent (fish of the day for me, steak for my elderly aunt who joined me).
Room 45 was spacious, spotlessly clean and had all the facilities for a comfortable stay. Lots of natural light, lovely quiet sheltered balcony and good lighting for nighttime. The bathroom was a little dated but again spotlessly clean. Generous number of good quality white fluffy towels. There were two large double beds with fresh, crisp white sheets. The bed was extremely comfortable. The room was very soundproof and I heard nothing from nearby rooms although many were occupied.
Breakfast was excellent value and should cater for most guests in my opinion. The range from ‘tea and toast’ through ‘eggs any style’ to the ‘big breakfast’ option should satisfy guest expectations for this type of establishment. My poached eggs were perfect (much better than many of my recent experiences with this simple dish). To me, the focus on quality over quantity of options on menus is the way to go and both my dinner and breakfast experiences confirmed this, high quality every time.
Staff were friendly, pleasant and helpful, including reception, restaurant and cleaning staff. The open areas in reception are light and airy and welcoming. The outside public deck overlooking the bay proved a perfect venue for my family and friends to join me for coffee on Sunday morning.
All in all, I had a very relaxing two day break in St Helens and my time at the Panorama contributed to this. I felt welcome, safe and secure and the food and facilities offered by the hotel meant I did not need to seek out other options in St Helens.
The new owners (of six weeks) are working hard to refurbish the hotel to establish its reputation, including upgrading the rooms and bathrooms. I can only wish them every success as they move forward.

Forget all reviews prior to 1 J an 2024. New owners, managers took over the property, and are addressing issues in previous reviews.
The work on negkected gardens and paving has commenced but has a way to go
We stayed in a garden view room for two, with two double beds.
Beds comfortable, room spotless, but bathroom fan noisy.
We ate a lovely evening meal in the expansive restaurant.
The property is very spacious with many guest lounge areas and outdoor decks
Wish the new owners all the best. It will beccome a must in St Helens.

New owners are doing amazing things with this venue. The place looks wonderful and fresh and clean. We hosted a dinner for 17 people recently and were very well looked after. We arrived to find a beautifully set long table with white cloths flowers and tea lights. (totally unexpected). Previous staff have also returned which was great to see. Everyone enjoyed all of their meals which were well cooked and extremely generous in size. (Oysters Kilpatrick seemed to be favourite.) Excellent value for money. Well done to all the staff. I reckon we will all return on a regular basis.

On arrival, the first time since new owners, it was great to see the gardens had been cleared and rejuvenated. Much improved and more welcoming. Was good to hear that new lighting will be installed in the car park as that has always been a safety hazard and deterrent for older people venturing out at night.
The lobby is now more welcoming with the sofas around the central round table. It would be good to have some side tables beside the sofas. Liked the two seater arrangements as well.
The new painting scheme and refreshed deck with heaters were appreciated.
We had a lovely table beside the window to enjoy the view for our lunch. On receiving the menus, we noticed we each had different ones which was odd. It would be good, however, for someone to spellcheck and edit the menu as these little attentions to details form a first impression. E.g, spring roll, should be rolls, steal sandwich should be steak sandwich etc
The variety of food was fairly good but very commonplace and could be found at most other similar venues in town. Needs to be more innovative if it is going to compete.
The bartender was most friendly and courteous as were the serving staff.
Our lunch itself was mostly average. Spring rolls obviously frozen then fried and the accompanying sauce was unpleasant.
The salt and pepper squid was plentiful, tender and tasty.
The greens served with both entrees were sad, inedible, limp, dry bits of what looked like oak leaf lettuce. A fresh mixed lettuce salad with some slivered carrots, red onion etc with a simple lemon and olive oil dressing would have made such a big difference.
We enjoyed the creamy prawns with rice and it was good to see the prawns had been deveined and were tasty. However, a bit of green always livens up the plate.
The new owners, management are obviously making a great effort and can be commended for getting involved with community activities such as the Bay of Fires arts festival and upcoming jazz weekend and I wish them all the best.

Good morning and many thanks for taking the time to write us such a detialed review. We are so pleased you enjoyed all the updates to the hotel, the grounds and the restaurant and bar. The menus are new as is the chefs and we appreciate the comments in relation to the minor spelling errors in the new menus . To be honest you are the first person to comment on these little errors since we launched the new menus earlier this week. I will certainly address the issue of the decorative bed of greens with the entrees with the Chef. Kindest regards from the management and staff.

This hotel is apparently under new management and the signs are good that the staff are working hard to make it a positive experience. Check in was easy with a luggage trolley and easy access along a pathway from the carpark to the rooms. Our sea view room had a lovely view (even though it was ground floor) with balcony, although it was a little chilly to take advantage of the balcony. Lots of bird life coming and going outside. The Panorama Bistro restaurant was very good once we realised that bistro meant you needed to order at the bar. Our shared seafood platter for two was delicious, apart from the fact that there was only one piece of fish over which we had to fight! All in all an excellent experience.

This hotel is well situated close to the centre of St Helens and a good base for visiting the Bay of Fires. We had a lovely big room with a balcony overlooking the water - it was worth paying extra for this. The room did feel a bit empty - perhaps it needs a sofa in it. We ate dinner and breakfast in the hotel restaurant - the food was good but there was a very limited choice for vegetarians. Overall we’d stay here again as it’s clear the new owners are updating and improving the hotel so some of the big open spaces will soon be filled with more furniture etc.

Dinner at Panorama Hotel with friends and our beautiful hosts from Queechy Motel. Oysters, locally grown, plump and succulent. Best oysters I have ever had in Tassie. Quick and professional service with a smile. Food was reasonably priced, exceptional service, a quality meal. Drinks were made with flair and great knowledge of Tasmanian made whiskeys and ciders. Indoor elegance and outdoor panoramic views, spoilt for choice. Beautiful large fire and comfortable lounges. Located on the bay, magnificent scenery whilst we enjoyed the evening sunshine, pelicans floating by and relaxing music in the background. 😁

I see that the hotel has new owners. The room I stayed in was dated - yellow/blue decor from the 90s. Mentioned some maintenance issues to - light gone and very old safe not working. I said to reception it wasn’t urgent, but would have been great if they had surprised me and got things fixed.
Restaurant staff were friendly - had to chase up a cappuccino and food at breakfast when the restaurant was not busy. Dinner was great.
Pia and Lesley on reception were great. They changed my room for me very kindly.
Emailed beforehand to main email address and Paul, the General Manager. Sadly had no response.

Many thanks for your detailed review and sincere apologies from the hotel in respect to your light in your room not working as well as the safe. I do understand after discussing this matter with my staff that you were moved to another room, as our maintenance team were absent that day, and that room,I believe, was totally satisfactory. Also I would like to apologise if you did not hear back from the general manager whose name is Veronica. She did not receive your email at all, so not quite sure what has happened there. As you mentioned the hotel is under new ownership and has had extensive renovations already with more to be done. We are working through the rooms with all new paint, bathroom fittings and soft furnishings. Kindest regards from the management and staff at the Panorama hotel.

We were sceptical due to previous reviews, but these do not reflect the new owners. We had an excellent meal here whilst staying in St Helens. The spring roll starter, Beef Teriyaki and Prawn Linguine were absolutely superb, as were our choice of local wine and beer. We had a table at the window with fantastic views across the bay. Peter and his wife only took ownership at Christmas 2023, and they, and their staff, couldn’t have been more welcoming or friendly. Please give them a chance!

We stayed for 4 days and we are seasoned travellers. This hotel is visually exceptional and is well worth staying here. It would be amazing for weddings and conferences. We had a king room with water views. Food was very good (but could be raised to the next level with room service etc), staff service was exceptional, I also used the conference facilities for a zoom call…. Staff went out of their way to assist me as I am in a powered wheelchair and found this hotel extremely accessible. The hotel is under new management and rooms are being upgraded. When this is finished it will be a jewel in the north east!. We will stay again.
