While traveling through northern Tasmania recently, my wife and I had a most enjoyable sojourn in Penguin at The Madsen Boutique Hotel. The room was immaculate and all facilities worked. I think that our bed was one of the finest we have experienced during our travels, as evidenced by the deep night's sleep we both had. But I've got to say -- it is the aggregate "special touches" that really define a boutique hotel, and The Madsen has those in spades. Imagine helping yourself to a complimentary sherry or port upon arrival (or both in my case). Or freshly ground coffee beans for your room's coffee maker (you can grind them yourself if you wish). Owner Phil and his team really go the extra mile to cater to any wish, and are most forthcoming with local knowledge and recommendations. As for location, well it is wise to turn left or right upon egress else one will find oneself in the ocean. The Madsen is beautifully renovated (it was an old bank I believe) and each suite is unique. Next stay we plan to inhabit the penthouse upstairs. Very well deserved praise to The Madsen Team!

Coming in from a cold, blustery, rainy evening was pleasantly welcomed by Phil, a warm fire and soft music. Our room was on the first floor of this delightful heritage hotel with a pleasant view over the Penguin foreshore, a wild ocean and a sunset. Perfect to relax after a long journey. Bed was comfortable and crispy white. Check out the hotel's rich history on the walls of the staircase.

Try El Perro just down the road for dinner - excellent tapas and free glass of sangria - compliments the Madsen.

We spent a very comfortable two nights in this hotel. Situated in the main street, it was just a short walk to cafes and restaurants and next door to a supermarket. Complimentary coffee and fruit were available. We enjoyed dinner and breakfast at local eateries recommended by our hosts. Recommended!

The room was a bit small, and needed a vacuum, but was otherwise clean. Pleasantly appointed, but not luxurious by any sense of the word. Reasonably quiet. Our room had views of the roof of the bank branch next door with a glimpse of the beach. The complementary sherry/port in the lobby & the 'honesty' bar were a nice touch. The reception was unmanned after we checked in in the early afternoon. While there was the usual supply of cheap mini shampoos/conditioners, the was no hand soap. Located on a very pleasant esplanade.

Stayed in waterfront suite upstairs [accessed by some very steep stairs] which had a direct view to the sea which was a good start but overall the ‘suite’ was very poor. On entry the room smelt ‘stale’, the carpet needed a vacuum, dust on the fireplace and surrounds, bed linen needs updating, the towels were terrible, very thin and rough, did not need to put any cold water on in the shower as water was lukewarm, toilet not clean, hand basin tapware poor quality, the sink plug was all stained and the fan above shower was full of dust and very grimy, toiletries provided very poor. Not a deluxe room by any standard which was disappointing, did not enjoy our stay.

Stayed one night in the Executive Spa room, located on the ground floor.

The good & the bad:

* Friendly welcome at Reception

* Free parking opposite (no council staff checking & plenty of spaces available after the shops close)

* Room is at the bottom of the stairs and unfortunately they creak, so you can hear everyone walking up and down

* Room location also means you can hear anyone sitting in the front bar chatting

* Only view is of the shop wall next door and lane way (no ocean views) and one other small window in the bathroom

* Nice spa

* Two supermarkets close by. One on either side, which was very convenient. Main one closed Sundays, but the other was open.

* Room clean & tidy, with plenty of provisions - tea, coffee, coffee pod machine (although you have to pay for each pod you use??), complimentary biscuits, a well stocked mini bar, complimentary ground coffee and fruit in the front bar

* Floor in the room above squeaks, so you can hear the people walking around. Can also hear them talking, even their toilet activities 😳, so needless to say I didn't get much sleep that night...

A nice, historic place to look at, but would definitely benefit from a few updates.

This is a character hotel in a fantastic location on Main Road in Penguin. Can be a touch noisy when windows are open (there is no AC) but for location that’s a small inconvenience. It is not the 4 star hotel it is advertised as & I think the price reflects that. We were not expecting anything fantastic for what we paid.
Our room was spacious. The bed was comfortable. Small dining table & lounge were fine.
The decor is dated & needs a refresh.
The room however wasn’t as clean as expected. It smelt of soured milk (we had to keep windows open to air room out), the towels were stained & I had the urge to clean the very grubby blinds in the bathroom.
Even the street entry was unkempt.
I did write the owners a note - it’s totally contactless checkin/checkout so you can’t see them.
The hotel has the potential to be fantastic. It just needs a good cleanup & refresh.

We had just an overnight stay after arriving on the Spirit of Tasmania ferry. The hotel has a very convenient location, and our room was clean, quiet and comfortable. I would highly recommend a visit to Penguin, especially if you are taking the ferry, and the Madsen has a great location within the town.
Note that the hotel does not have parking, but there is plenty of free parking in the public car park a few doors down.

We were very disappointed with our stay, photos do not match the reality. Our room was in the older part of the hotel, it had a very strange setup with some sort of circular stage in the middle of the room. Very old and tired, in a need of a new paint job and clean. Bathroom is spacious but very dated, certainly not the executive spa claims as advertised.

We checked in within one in sight, keys left on desk with a note. Did the same on checkout.

Location is great, opposite the foreshore and supermarkets located right next door.

We were warmly welcomed by Ting Ting our host who was very attentive throughout our stay. We had a great view of Bass Strait and the Penguin "CBD" from our room. The hotel is one block back from the ocean on a quiet street, so our room was very quiet.
We would definitely stay here again if we are ever in Penguin or the surrounding area.

Hello Lisa, We do store luggage for inbound guests arriving early and then place it in the room they’ve booked once it has been cleaned. Furthermore, while the check-in time is 2pm, our policy is to allow convenient early check-in for incoming guests subject to the room being ready for occupation.

Hi Crystal If you are visiting Tasmania (which I'd highly recommend), then the best way to see it is with a hire car. Tassie roads are quiet and signposting good. A hire car will give you the freedom to see some of the out of the way hidden gems. I'd suggest you prebook a hire car from your favourite hire car company (I like Avis) From Devonport airport, it would be about a 35 to 40minute easy drive. It is 5 minutes from the airport to the Bass Highway (Highway 1), half and hour along the highway and then 2 minutes to find The Madsen on the esplanade. We loved our stay, but you could read about that with our review :-) Quaint town to visit, lots of things to do in the area.... have fun and enjoy!

We do have off-street parking, although it is hardly used because of the narrow driveway and tight spaces, but it has been used on occasion. Also we have an agreement with the CBA Bank next door to use their parking after hours and this option has been used more often. However, as Penguin is a pretty boutique seaside village, for convenience most guests park their cars roadside opposite the hotel on the side facing the sea as there is no time limit restriction in the designated parking space. Many of our guests have parked their expensive cars or motorbikes this way and we've never experienced anything untoward in the last four years, probably aided by the fact that we have security cameras covering this area.
