This accommodation (The Derwent) had everything you could need for a very comfortable stay. There were lovely breakfast provisions as well which was a lovely surprise. Overlooking the river made for a beautiful stay. Highly recommend. New Norfolk is a quaint little town.

This accommodation was so unexpected. We were blown away by the location, nothing more relaxing that sitting in the lounge room watching the Derwent River flow past at the bottom of the garden. The cottage was well appointed, very clean and very comfortable. There were ample breakfast supplies and a stove and hotplates for cooking. The beds were so comfortable and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. If we are ever down that way again, we will definitely stay there again.

What a wonderful and serene place to stay. The cottage was fantastic quality, and spotlessly clean. Access to the river and the seats on the deck of the river was the perfect place to sit back, relax and take in the beautiful surrounds. The bed was literally the comfiest bed I’ve had the pleasure of sleeping in. The only thing I think might improve the cottage, is that a full size fridge would be more practical.

After our disastrous stay on Cradle Mountain(!) we winged it last night and found this place in the town of New Norfolk, Tasmania's third oldest town established in 1807 when settlers were transferred to the area from Norfolk Island's fading Penal Colony.

It’s really cosy and well set out on the river - the sheets smell divine!!! We’d definitely stay again a few nights to explore the region. Just don’t expect anything to be open after 8.30 (even Woolworths and BWS)! It’s a very sleepy river town.

So peaceful and clean, Veronica was so friendly. The garden is beautiful and the view fantastic. Looking forward to going back again. Cereal, bread and spreads supplied. Great outdoor bbq area. Our room could have slept 5 but there was just the 2 of us.

This is a fabulous, well stocked and furnished home away from home. Comfortable beds, superior towels and bed linen. Relaxing location by the River Derwent in beautiful gardens. Wonderful for a long weekend escape or as your base for some adventures around the area.

I was disappointed from the start. Was looking forward to our river view when we were down graded from that to a room with a view of the main road and no continental breakfast as stated. Very upset, it was my birthday holiday.

Obviously people have a different idea on what 'luxury' really is - maybe the hosts should travel around Australia and see what for themselves where they are missing the mark. These 'cottages' were advertised as being luxury but fell far from the mark. Having generic slices of bread in lunchbox containers in the fridge was not really appreciated, although there was a good supply of cereals. We stayed in a two bedroom unit, with a small flat downstairs which was occupied by people that stayed up late and were quite noisy while congregating at their back door to smoke which is situated under the main bedroom window. Lucky we were very tired. The view of the Derwent River was beautiful, but the hosts have locked the sliding door off the living/kitchen/dining area because they have not put a deck out the back yet to enjoy this view??? You would think that would be a priority. I also ended up with 2 spiders on me, which I killed - it is good I am not scared of spiders, but maybe the units need fumigating. We had just spent 2 weeks travelling around Tassie and had stayed in luxury cottages and cabins that had the feeling of being very special. At Shingles, we felt like we were staying in the granny flat of relatives and were happy to drive away the next day.

We needed a final night stay close enough to Hobart Airport, but we didn’t want to stay in the city again and someone suggested New Norfolk as a good stopping point. We liked the idea of staying by the river for our final night and Shingles Riverside Cottages proved to be perfect!
Our Cottage (Willows) was perfect for two with a good-sized lounge area and the bed on a raised platform adjacent. There was a separate bathroom and kitchen, both with all the bits you need for a comfortable stay. Also included in our rate were generous breakfast provisions (cereals, bread, eggs, milk, condiments) and it was nice to go to the local supermarket and cook our own dinner for a change from eating out. Our only (very small) criticism is that the dishes were not particularly clean, so we needed to clean things before cooking/eating. To be fair this seems to be a common issue with self-catering places.
The most special part of this accommodation is the location, with gardens full of interesting bits right on the River Derwent. We took some local cheese and a bottle of wine down to the seats on the pontoon and chilled to the flow of the river as the sun went down. Stunning even in the freezing cold! The cottage was perfectly quiet, lovely and warm and we enjoyed our night.
We enjoyed going to the local New Norfolk Markets early on the Saturday morning to get some more local produce. This would be a good location to use as a base to explore the nearby Mt Field National Park, so we hope to return for that.

We were so pleasantly surprised when we opened the door to our "Willows" room. We did not book in advance although we did use Google to find the location. Veronica (the owner) was extremely friendly upon checkin. The room was lovely, clean and with all the comforts of home and some added extras... a real find at an extremely reasonable price. We loved our stay and would happily recommend to others.
