Detailed Reviews
Stayed here for four nights in our camper trailer on a powered site of which there are 16 available: be sure to book ahead as they are very popular.
The campground is located just after the Visitors Centre which is only a short walk away as is the track to Russell Falls. It is a lovely, peaceful setting in a pleasant natural setting. The campground has excellent amenities with flushing toilets and hot water showers, a camp kitchen as well as picnic shelters and a BBQ.
A great base for the national park and nearby areas. A great stay here.

A national park campground more like a caravan park. First come first served, get here by about 10.30 to get in. A little crowded but great value for monet at $20 a night for a powered site. Good showers ($2) but can be busy if the campground is busy which often is.

Small campground with basic ammenities. In the nearby creek we saw a platypus in the evening and we also saw echidnas in the camping area. Booking is not possible so be there early to secure a spot. There are a few decent walks in the park.

beautiful spot by river and great location for visiting local attractions. Run by national parks but still has flushing toilets and hot showers like a commerical campground! The the official camping area is so restricted that on many sites the grass has been worn away so you end up camping on dusty ground crammed in almost touching elbows with your neighbours and hearing every fart, snore and burp. The beautiful overflow camping area is huge (almost worth turning up late in day to get one of these spots....). I know we want to minimise human impacts on the natural environment but i think expanding the camping over the full area (and rotating sites out of use for a while to recover) would be a better management practice for this beautiful and convenient campground

A girl was bullied out of her camp site by a couple claiming it was theirs. She had been camping there since the day before. Other campers tried to help her to no avail. Several calls were made trying to get a ranger or authority to come help her but no one would come. Luckily a kind camper offered to share their space with her otherwise she would have had nowhere to go. Very disappointing.

travelling in Tasmania with a camper is full of fun, however there are some challenges. We were surprised at the number of camp sites on offer with no facilities. Mount Field is NOT one of them.
There are no bookings, You need to claim your site by filling in some paperwork and placing it in a plastic envelope at your site. Be sure the site is vacant. Some sites appear to be vacant as the camper is away exploring.
Great facilities and close to walks and river.

We stayed in the government huts up the mountain from the camp ground, near Lake Dobson (15km from the campground). It was $45 per night for a hut, which sleeps 6. We stayed with our 3 children, aged 8, 6 and 3. The huts have no power or hot water, so you need to take a camp stove or similar to heat water and to do cooking, and make sure you have plenty of lights/lamps. The huts are very basic constructions, but inside they have lino floors and sealed walls so they are very cosy and with the fire going are very warm - we had taken lots of extra blankets but didn't need them even on the night that it snowed. The huts have a kitchen area with a sink (cold water only) and bench and table and seats, and a log fire, with wood provided. There is also a bedroom with 3 lots of bunk beds with vinyl mattresses. There is a communal composting toilet on site which was clean and well cared for. The views from the huts were amazing, and it was incredible staying in such an untouched place - only occasional cars using the road to the lake, it was like we were on the mountain by ourselves most of the time. It is a short walk to Lake Dobson which has a lovely walk around it, and there are plenty of longer walks to take from there. It was a quick trip back down the mountain to walk to Russell Falls and explore the area down there. If the weather is very rainy or snowy it can be difficult to get up or down the road, so make sure you have snow chains and extra supplies just in case. We saw lots of wildlife - mainly birds, wallabies and possums - make sure you keep food covered and indoors or the possums will help themselves. We also explored the area immediately surrounding the hut, lots of little pools, creeks, groves of trees, rocks to climb on etc. On the cold mornings the pools were frozen and there were icicles everywhere, it was amazing.
We would definitely stay here again and even use this as a base for exploring the area.

We paid $22 for a family of four in an unpowered site (numbered sites have a picnic table and bench). Campsite was adjacent to a pretty flowing river and fee included hot showers and access to laundry. Good optus wireless signal available. 15 minute walk to spectacular Russell Falls. 20 minutes drive to Lake Dobson Government huts and access to high alpine tarn walks.

We stayed one night here. Location was great, clean facilities, plus staff at visitors centre were really helpful. Did some walks, to the falls, which was easy for the kids. Lots of animals activity at night.

Great campsite, clean amenities, laundry and hot showers!! The visitor centre is great, lots of souvenirs, information and great meals (huge!). The walks are well maintained and the glow worm night walk is heaps of fun...just make sure you turn off your torch so everyone can see the glow worms!

if it's not a fire ban there is a fire pit that can be used just near the camp ground. The wood is stocked by the rangers. I'm not sure about individual fires for each site though but I don't think you can have those.
